EXPERIMENT #3

APPLICATION OF VOLTAGE DIVISION CURRENT

DIVISION AND OHMS LAW
Performed: 9/11/13
Submitted: 9/18/13
ECE 2111
Derick Pope - 901150412
Bilas Chowdhury

Purpose: Analyze internal resistance and compare the expected results to the ones received.
Equipment Used:

Function Generator

Decade Resistance Box

Digital Multimeter

Circuit Board and wires

Procedure:
Section A
1. Have the resistance box implement certain resistances and use the digital multimeter to
determine what the actual resistance is being put out.
2. Do this starting at 500 ohms then go up to 3000 ohms with intervals of 100.
3. Repeat the same process using intervals of 500 but go up to 10K ohms.
4. Make ratios of each box resistance compared to the multimeter resistance.
Section B
1. The function generator will be used for this section so set it at 75% of the full scale
amplitude, 150 Hz frequency, and Sine waveform.
2. Measure the AC volts output with the digital multimeter of the circuit in intervals of 500
starting from 10K ohms going down to 500 ohms.
3. Take the average, standard deviation, and standard error of the numbers.

Section C
1. Set up the circuit below:

2. Similar to the previous section, record the voltage and current with resistance starting
at 1000 ohms then going up to 3000 ohms in intervals of 100.
3. Make a power dissipated versus resistance graph.

Calculations:
Part 1 Section A
Multimeter/Ratio: Box = 501/500 = 1.0020
Average: Sum/20 = 0.9897
Correction factor: Average*Box Setting = 0.9897*500 = 494.8279
Part 1 Section B
(Excel calculated these numbers but here are the formulas excel used)
Ravg = (1/n) Ri

Rstdev = sqrt((1/n) (Ri Ravg)2)

Rstderr = Rstdev/sqrt(n)
Part 1 Section C
P = V2/R = 1.812/1000 = 0.0033 Watts
Discussion:
The decade resistance box and function generator both have internal resistances that
alter the actual resistance being used compared to what is expected. The correction factor value was
rather consistent throughout all the resistances as well as the power dissipated. At 0.0039 watts, the
maximum power is dissipated.
Conclusion: The experiments were successful. There were no problems setting up the circuits. Excel
helped quite a bit with the calculations and recording values.
