1976
The history of the
Wrtsil jet division
starts with the first
jets delivered for 495
kW
2002
Largest waterj ets
ever are delivered for
23 MW, designs for
up to 50 MW are
available
2004
Fastest Wrtsil
waterj ets ever go for
tri als and reach 70
knots
1976 - 2004
Waterjets are further
developed for larger
powers and
efficiencys up to 74 %

Why change the impeller design?
FROM MIXED FLOW TO AXIAL PUMPS:
Market tendency shows that more power is installed in an even
narrower transom less built-in space
Risk: the biggest possible waterjet size is too small for the installed
power and required performance
Solution: develop a waterjet that can handle larger powers in a smaller
size: The Axial built waterjet
Example?

Mixed Flow pumps: Maximum power for largest
possible jet size, no increase of jet size possible!
October 05, 2011
LJ150E (wings) and
LJ160E (center), both non
axial waterjets
Biggest possible sizes in LCS2 Transom:
LJ 150E, mixed flow, wing jets
LJ 160E, mixed flow, center jets
Solutions offered by axial jets (LCS4)
LJ150E (wings) and
WLD1720 (center) axial
waterjets
New! Biggest possible sizes in LCS4 Transom:
LJ 150E, mixed flow, wing jets
WLD1720, mixed flow, center jets
Solution: J et size increase of 0,12m
without increase of built-in space

Benefits of compact & efficient design
10 15% lower weight
35% cavitation margin improvement
25% smaller transom mounting flange
Improved hydrodynamic efficiency
8% engine load reduction in maneuvering
10% higher shaft speed reducing torque and thus weight in the drive lines
Tip clearance guaranteed due to axial shape and no risk of impeller housing collisions

Option 1: Same transom,
Equivalent diameter
axial: WLD720
Option 2: Same transom,
larger diameter axial : WLD810
Option 3: Smaller transom,
same diameter axial: WLD720
Market tendency for large high powered slender
vessels:
Small transom area to reduce resistance
High installed powers
Design problem:
Required jet sizes do not fit into vessel
design
Platforms/slipways are too high above the
waterline

Including inlet duct
Pre-aligned by Wrtsil
Delivered to shipyard for instant hull weld-in
No transom machining required
Mechanical interfaces minimized to drive shaft connection and one cooling
water connection.
No commissioning required
Stainless Steel Stator bowl for lifetime performance
Improved steering and reversing performance
October 05, 2011
Ship owner benefits
High performance pump design with hull optimized inlet duct for superior
performance at ship speeds up to 50 knots
Inboard hydraulics and feedback:
Reduced maintenance
Easy access
No external oil lubricated or oil containing parts outside the hull ensuring a
100% spill free system
Hydraulic power pack and thrust bearing lubrication set for less maintenance &
higher reliability
Guaranteed lifetime performance because of Stainless Steel stator bowl
