Tonifying and Nourishing The lower abdomen in the dantien (cinnabar field), the residence of the deepest energies of the body. CV 4 and 6 are therefore among the most important tonifying and nourishing points of the body. Along with CV 8 they are able to rescue yang and restore consciousness in cases of yang collapse.
The Conception Vessel Channel
The Main Channel
1. The channel starts at a deep level in the uterus in women ad in the lower abdomen (CV 3) in men.
2. It emerges in the center of the perineum at CV 1 and travels superficially up the anterior median line of the torso to CV 24 in the middle of the chin, where bilateral deep branches travel around the angle of the mouth to the gums under the upper lip (GV 28).
3. It then ascends the cheeks to the optic foramen where they meet ST 1.
4. A second branch is said to originate in the pelvic cavity, enter the spine, and ascend the back.

Name Meeting of Yin Hui: meeting, convergence Yin: yin, the complement of yang Alternate Names: Screen, Flat Screen, Lower Extreme, Metal Gate, Seabed, Ghost Store, Lower Yin Divergence
LJ CV 1 represents the source of yin in the human being. This is a key point for treating the terminal separation of yin and yang. This point is frequently indicated for sexual abuse. If the pulse of both hands have collapsed and the patient evidences the qi- wild pattern described (all pulse positions evidence a superficial pounding. . . there is no depth to the entire pulse, indicating that the pounding that is felt is the dispersion of the patients final store of yang-qi. . . yin and yang are at their final point of separation. At this point, with the true yin exhausted, the patients yang energy floats to the top of the pulse. Now one is truly knocking at the door of death.) then a different therapeutic strategy (than an H/W) must be chosen. In such a case, the yin of the whole being must be tonified in order to root that yang. CV 1, named Meeting of Yin, represents the source of yin in the human being. GV 20, Hundred Meetings, is the gathering point of the yang-qi. Together, these two points CV 1 Meeting of Yin
represent the central axis of heaven and earth as it occurs in the human being. Treating them together can help restore balance of the primordial yin and yang and provide access to a reserve of this energy. Interestingly, an alternate name for CV 1 is jin men or metal gate. This recalls the entrance to the kingdom of the Queen Mother. In mythology, the primordial brother and sister resurrect the human race after riding the crest of the flood through the Golden Gate (the gate of the Queen Mother). Similarly, a key function of CV 1 is for revival after drowning. The Nei Jing states that the Conception Vessel originates in the uterus and, as in myth, it is the metal gate that provides a passageway into and out of the womb of Dao.
Other Use when the persons spirit is drowning. This is a point of resurrection of the spirit. This point is used only when all the officials need support. First use KI 2,then go to CV1. Use when the spirit is actually overcome. A block may be created here after giving birth. This point affects the balance between yin and yang and all junction points. JG: This is the beginning of all yin energy; it stabilizes, holds, absorbs. Its a first aid point for drowning in any sense (emotionally, spiritually). Use it when there is not enough vital essence to support life, when there is no foundation. It allows a person to sink into their own center of gravity. It provides structure and anchoring. It influences sexuality and is good for exhaustion after childbirth. CV 2 Crooked Bone

Other This point can do all that CV 1 can do except for resuscitation. It helps all water difficulties, perspiration, internal secretions, water retention, in continence, lack of virility. Use locally for the genitals, uterus, bladder, especially when there is cold. JG: This point stabilizes, sinks, holds, absorbs. Think of an eagle taking off to flythis is a balance of weight and substance vs. lift and fly. DC: This point has a broader effect than CV 1. Its good for cold in the genitals, uterus or bladder. It warms yang and supplies the Kidneys, regulates menses and stops vaginal discharge.

Name/ER Central Pole Zhong: Center, central Ji: pole Alternate Names: Qi Source, Qi Fish, Jade Spring, Bladder Mu8
Here is the beginning of life before separation of yin and yang. It is a point of origin. Between the two poles of heaven and earth there are all possible human activities divided into two kinds, yin and yang. And this is the image of the tree, the woodthe ridge pole which spans both sides. It implies the unity and origin of the central pole from which yin and yang originate.
Other Do not use when there is major imbalancewhen some of the pulses are up and some are down. This is a classic reunion point, the utmost middle of the Body, Mind and Spirit and a meeting point of all officials. An alternative name, Central Pole, comes from astrology which identified a central pole star around which three others revolved. This is relevant to this point as it is a reunion for CV with KI, SP and LR. Its used for problems with the Bladder and to help the placenta separate. CV 3 to CV6 have a strong effect on the endocrine systems. They stimulate the testes and sex hormones. Its a grounding pointit pulls things down into the lower jiao. Name Origin Pass Guan: Pass, passageway, gate; critical juncture; to lock in Yuan: origin, original, source
Depending on which meaning of the character guan is considered, CV 4 is a passageway of original qi, the critical juncture of original yang and original yin, or the place where original qi is stored (locked in). The plethora of alternate names for this point are a result of it being the site of the uterus , the dan tien, and the life gate fire Other As the entrance into the Lower Dan Tien, the lower Cinnabar Field, the lower energy vortex, this point is a very powerful energy source which strengthens the whole system. This is the first gate through which energy passes. It must be kept well oiled and open. Its a good point for impotence and relieves hypertension. This point mentally brings peace of mind, calm and order. It roots the hun when troubled at night (e.g., leaving the body). This point is directly concerned with the function of the SI and problems with sorting. Shen and ching energies mix here. Its used to warm the lower jiao, sometimes with women who want to conceive. JG: This point creates an opening in the presence of stuckness. It encourages arousal, sexual energy, and desire in life. Never close those gates. It resolves sexual hesitation or confusion, as it is the gate to the lower part of ourselves. It allows a person to step into clarity. I am not feeling a lot of sexuality and I would like to feel more. CV 5 Stone Gate

Name/ER Stone Gate Shi: Stone Men: Gate, door Alternate Names: Cinnabar Field, Crux Disinhibitor, Life Gate, Shu Gate, Infertility, Essential Dew, TE Mu
Overall, the name indicates something heavy, blocked, massed. Infertility. Where there is a stone belly nothing grows. Also gives us the image of the richness of the minerals of the Earth. Supports the Yin.
Other This point is a main center of energy. Its the first gate where energy is likely to be blocked. If, after 8 or 9 treatments, there is still no energy, do CV 4 and 5 together. Its also good for bowels, problems with menses. Use for a lack of energy, lack of vitality, lack of warmth, weakness and fatigue. This point is like an AEP for the TE, especially for a cold lower jiao. Use lots of moxa for lifelessness, inertial. Its a good point for stabilizing the TE and maintaining a good pulse. Stone refers to the Cinnabar stone, that precious stone. At the level of the umbilicus you have a balance between yin and yang, so you get a lot of pivotal points. The Cinnabar field is the beginning of that balance. Stone can also refer to barren and infertility. AT times its put on the forbidden list as it has a big effect on the uterus and womb, especially when there is cold and a lack of vitality. JG: When a patient cant find the strength to move past the stuckness, this point creates a big axe, touches the realm of passion generated by the gate of vitality, and overcomes lack of desire. Its a good point if things have been shut down for a while. CV 6 Sea of Qi

Name Sea of Qi Qi: qi, breath Hai: sea Alternate Names: Lower Sea of qi, Lower Huang, Huang Origin, Navel, Small Navel
This area serves as a reservoir of qi for the whole body. It is the place from which qi emanates and to which it returns and is thus the Sea of Qi. In Taoist meditation practices the breath is brought to this area and the qi is stored there. The delineation between qi and breath is unclear in Chinese, an ambiguity preserved by the name Sea of Qi.
Other This point is used a lot in chronic disease/debilitation. Use it when the person is bogged down in negativity, spiritually, mentally exhausted, and/or depressed. It has a far reaching effect in bringing vitality to the lower jiao. Use for a cold lower jiao, abdominal pain, kidney pain, or a frequent urge to pass urine. It can bring warmth to spread energy from the sea into the stream, mind, etc. For infertility, moxa can distribute vital qi into the genital area. You could use it for someone with good pulses, but spiritually resigned or dead inside. There may be a lack of quality in energy, though there may be quantity. You can disperse it if the pulses are all over the place and the person is exhausted from too much storminess. Use moxa 99% of the time, though you can disperse it for hypertension. JG: This point restores upright qi. Its good for long term or serious chronic illness. Use it when the meridians arent providing enough. It works the same way on the spirit level-0use it when the spirit is knocked out. Its also good for intestinal issues such as irritable bowel. CV 7 The Crossing

Its good for suicidal tendencies, frustration, depression, lack of love, withdrawal, and instability. It affects yin and blood, fertility and sexuality, sex hormones, impotence (TB: the most potent point for impotence per JRW), premature ejaculation, scanty periods, an inability to hold/contain. This point nourishes and harmonizes the energy in the lower jiao. By warming and raising the function to its proper level, it brings the power of the heart and joyfulness into this area. Name/ER Spirit Gate Shen: spirit Que: a watch tower on either side of a palace gate, a gate; a palace
Alternate Names: Life Stem, Qi Union, Qi Abode, Center of the Navel The character que is a symbol for an empty space that serves as a gate; it is considered interchangeable with que, meaning gap. The spirit enters and leaves through CV 8, the Spirit Gate. The navel is said to be the residence of the supreme Unity, the source of life. Originally, the name of CV 8 was Qi Abode, which may have been chosen on the basis of the statement in the Taoist Storehouse, that the qi of later heaven resides at the navel. Its name was later changed to avoid confusion with ST 11. B,E,W
The character Que represents the look-out tower above a gate, a city gate. An imperial city. A hiatus, a deficiency, a fault; wanting; to omit; to be reserved. Deficiency is not a good translation of this point name. By deficiency, it means the space in a wall of a city where you put a watch tower. Watch tower is a much better translation. When you have a gate, you need a watch tower to guard it.
This point prepares the way, providing protection and nurturing for the presence of the spirits; the home of the spirits. Allows only the most pure essences for the nurturing of the spirits. ER
Other This point gives heat and warmth to the spirit. Use for a really deficient spirit, utter depletion. Its a useful point for someone worn down over a long time; use when the vital energy seems low. You may get a person whos better physically but they dont feel better in themselves a deeper level of treatment is needed. Use if the patient is resigned, collapsing, with a void in their center. Its good for birth trauma. Spirit Palace Gate refers to the idea of a watchtower on either side of a palace gate. These are protective towers where the spirit enters & leaves the body at birth and death. Its especially good for people addicted to drugs. Moxa enhances, encourages, nourishes and gets the spirit moving. You can really use unlimited amounts of moxa on this point. Salt is used as a leveler (salt=metal). Moxa warms the salt, hence warming the metal within the metal. Only tonify this point; its forever forbidden to needle. CV 9 Water Division

Name Water Divide Shui: Water Fen: Divide, part, separate Alternate Names: Divided Waters, Central Guard
This point is located in the region of lower opening of the small intestine, which functions in separating the clear and the turbid, drawing off fluid from the digesta and sending it to the bladder, leaving the solid waste to be conveyed by the large intestine. CV 9 is employed in the treatment of water swelling. For both of these reasons, CV 9 is called Water Divide.
Other This point is good to help give balance with all secretions, fluids, hormones, etc. Do not limit to water, edema, etc. It balances secretions at all levels. HOWEVER, if there is already chaos, more turbulence is created. Its a big point for edema in the lower extremities, ankles and sweating. Its good for people with excess or deficient perspiration, an inability to urinate. People running on high and unable to slow. Eyes dry or continually watering. Eye mucus or lots of catarrh (?) Use this point after working with the Bladder and Kidney for some time but somehow you still cant get the patient balanced. Its for fluidity of the mind and body. Its a junction point for the whole body mind and spirit. This point sits over the small intestine. Water Division connects with the function of the small intestine to separate pure from impure and fluids from solid matter. JG: Use when having trouble on the meridian level balancing fluids. The venter is divided into three sections: upper, middle and lower. CV 10 is located at the lower border of the stomach and is thus called Lower Venter. E,W,B
This point has almost the same name as CV 12 & 13. It represents the work of the Stomach to nourish life. Lower Cavity: function of the point is to descend qi. ER

Name/ER Great Tower Gate Ju: Great, Gigantic (this character is often found in Yang Ming points (ST/LI)) Que: Gate tower; a palace
Alternate Names: Great Tower Gate, Great Palace, Heart Mu, As in CV 8, the character Que represents the look-out tower above a gate, a city gate.
Together these two characters (Ju Que) refer to the name of a sword that gets rid of troublemakers (the turbid). It also refers to the image of the sternum as a sword; it is also the name of a needle. This sword/needle can go deep in the chest in order to get rid of whats wrong. Name/ER Turtledove Tail Jui: Turtledove Wei: Tail Alternate Names: Tail Screen, Spirit Mansion, Anterior Breast With the image of the chest and ribs as a turtledove, the head of the dove is at the throat. The sternum is the tail of the bird and the ribs are the wings. This point is at the limit between the upper and middle jiaos. It filters anything coming up (does not let turbid up) to guard the Heart. It keeps the proper openings. It is the Luo point for CV. It relates, along with CV 6, to membranes and tissues, specifically those supporting the Heart. Warning: Forbidden to moxa because it weakens the Heart. Sometimes forbidden to needle b/c it is a delicate place & there are technical issues.
Other This point is used more with Fire CFs. Use it when the persons Fire is threatened. The person may feel anxiety and panic but it hasnt yet gotten through to the Supreme Controller. This point brings stability. As the alarm point for V, it has its own pathway, spirit treasury, for pain in the heart because of loss of a loved one. JG: This point nourishes all of the yin organs. Its a juicy, filling point which soothes and calms the Mind. It touches the spirit of the pericardium when its feeling shattered or broken (use on any CFfullness can develop there, too fragile or full). Name Center Palace Zhong: Center, central, middle Ting: court, courtyard; palace
The chest is the abode of the heart; the heart is the sovereign organ. The sternum and rib cage are like a palace that surrounds and protects the emperor. AT the center of this area is CV 16, the Center Palace.
A Taoist text, Canon of the Yellow Court, names the central cinnabar field (or heart field) the central palace: The three fields are the upper (or) celestial field, the central (or) heart field, and the lower (or) cinnabar field. The upper palace receives the essential qi from below, the central palace receives essential qi from above, and the lower palace receives essential qi from the center. CV 16 is the region of the central cinnabar field and is thus named Central Palace.
Within the palace of the rib cage is the Jade Hall (CV 18); CV 16 is like a courtyard in front of the that hall. The word central can refer to both the midline location and a central position in the upper burner. The name could thus be rendered as Central Courtyard in keeping with these ideas.
The Spirit Courtyard (CV 24) is above (on the head) and the Inner Courtyard (ST 44) is below (on the foot). CV 16 is then the Central Courtyard.
Other This point is a temple in its own right. Energetically it affects the Heart. CV 16 and 17 are in the middle Cinnabar Field, middle jiao, where the Supreme Controller resides. These points all go directly to the Supreme Controller, but if you use them and there is not much response it is because you have not done enough spade work with the officials. Name/ER Chest Center Dan: the central area of the chest Zhong: Center, middle Alternate Names: Chest Hall, Upper Sea of qi, The Source, Original Child
CV 17 relates to Qi. CV 18 relates to fluids. CV 19 relates to the making of Blood.
The Sea of Qi in the middle of the chest is the gathering of essences/substances to make and distribute qi. The idea that there is a place in my body that is well-protected and needs only the most pure essences. This is a place where you should receive only the pure, not liquids/essences of bad quality.
Dan is the same character as altar, except replace the flesh radical with the character for Earth. Just as you clean and purify for a ritual altar and prepare yourself, so is this the role of the center of the chest in accepting only the pure essences in order to bring all the benevolent influences from above. Tan Zhong is often compared to the Forbidden City. It protects the HT from intruders. It determines who sees the Emperor.
This point provides the circulation of Qi, Blood, Essences. It is the Hai (Reunion) pt for Lung and the Great Luo pt of Stomach. The qi of the ST comes up through the diaphragm and gathers together with the Heavenly Qi (from respiration) to form Ancestral Qi (Gathering Qi). This point connects with SI and LR which are nearby (in some texts). This is the meeting point of Ren Mai with KI. All the qi and all the influences meet here; all that comes from SP & ST to nourish the Sea of Qi and all the respiration from Heaven. The role is the servant of the HT--for qi production/circulation and circulation of Xue and Fluids. Gathering and uniting of all of the Qi from all origins: digestion, respiration, etc. This point is really a deep function of the body. CV 17 Center of the Breasts
This point is on Ren Mai (with CV 6) because this yin meridian is the base from which the yang energy spring. There is a deep connection between CV 17 and PC. They have the same name in the Su Wen.
LJ As a reunion point where the pericardium and lung officials meet, CV 17 is uniquely able to empower the synchronization of the lung and heart rhythm. The state of the infant has been compared to the primordial nature of the eternal Dao. Hence the function of the pericardium is to guard the essential, child-like nature of the heart.
Other This is the place where the heart resides, the Imperial Palace. Here there is a sense of feeding and containment. This is the temple of heaven within our body, where energy can be gathered and transmitted. Its a secret place full of power which allows communication to radiate out from the Supreme Controller to the whole of the body and the rest of the world. This is a sea of energy which reinvigorates the lungs and the Heart. Use for a cold upper jiao, people with labored breathing, angina, abnormalities of the breath, tightening or band around the chest. When all of the seas are worn out, the patient is tired, frustrated, then restore the CV. Get the shen to move and the patient will feel better. Consider CV 17 when you are stuck and you cant balance and center via the command points. CV 18 Jade Court

Tang can be the central room in the palace where ancestors are worshipped; or where the King dispenses justice. It can also be used for meetings, etc.
It is a room for the reception of Jadethe purest essences of Earth (Perfection). This point is linked with the HT, which is the embodiment of the perfect. Jade also alludes to the sovereign, the HT. Another point with the character Tang is Shen Tang, III 39, at the level of the Back Shu point for the Heart. So Tang is linked with the Heart in both the front and rear of the body.
CV 17 relates to Qi. CV 18 relates to fluids. CV 19 related to making of Blood.
Jade represents the pure and rich condensation of essences to make lifethe vital fluidsthe blood of the heart. This refers to the function of Ren Mai of keeping all the rich and pure fluids (yin) for the HT to make blood.
Jade is used together with image for Metal to represent rich and vital fluids. At the level of the Heart, Ren Mai keeps fluids pure that are offered to the Heart to make Blood. Pure Blood and pure Spirits create the pure Life of the rest of the body. The quality of the Blood affects who you are.

Name/ER Purple Palace Zi: color purple. Silk character appears for colors that are not found in nature but are obtained by dyeing. Purple has to do with the Heart and the Blood. Gong: The central palace. Can also be used to represent an ordinary building. When Gong is the first note of the pentagonic scale, it is the reference point for the establishment of other notes.
CV 17 relates to Qi. CV 18 relates to fluids. CV 19 related to making of Blood.
Overall this point name has the stamp of the spirits, because it has passed through the Heart. In Chinese literature, Zi Gong is the name of a group of stars. They are close to the North Star (i.e. a pole from where all heavenly circulation is organized). The polar star is a ridge-pole; the ultimate reference point. So this is the palace that organizes all of the circulation around it. It replicates the celestial order. Upper CV has several points that allude to heavenly formation, the body reflecting what is seen in Heaven.
Other Purple is the color of the pole star, guide in the sky A fusion of aura of colors gives purple. The heart doesnt do anything, it just IS. Purple was worn by the emperors. The Purple Palace is a heavenly palace. The emphasis here is on the LU as well as the Heart. Its good for problems with the breaststenderness before or after menstruation, swelling abscesses, mastitis, cancer. BE CAREFUL

Name/ER Florid Canopy Hua: characters for transformation, vegetation. Aboveall possible flowering, glory, radiant, splendid (the best possible result of the vital forces). Best development of natural forces. All that is coming from a society that is working well. Radiant blossoming in science, art, culture, etc. Gai: Expression for eyebrows. Canopy, cover. Idea of covering like a roof made with straw. Canopy or umbrella over a chariot. Beautiful; also manifests the beauty of the forces that are present. Like the canopy over the carriage of the Emperor, not only protects, but manifests the vital forces of the Emperor. This display will attract Spirit and further build the vital forces. So it manifests and attracts beauty at the same time.
So, this canopy protects the chest, and attracts Spirits and good vital forces to us. The Lung is attracting the Qi of the body at this level. Many books say that this point is where the best essences of the 5 Zang rise up to meet with the Lung in the morning (or that this is actually the function of this point, to assist in this movement). The function of this point is to protect and to be a manifestation of the great vital forces within. If there are strong vital forces, the person will attract good, strong spirits, qi, positive forces. CV 20 is at the top of the chest, at the top of the trunk which contains the Zang Fu and there creates an arch to attract qi.
Hua Gai can mean the whole function of the Lung and chest. It is also a constellation of seven stars in Cassiopeia, covering of the throne of the Lord.. At the level of CV 20, there is a gathering/manifestation of the vitality of the pure essences. At level of CV 21, there is the feeling of directing the movement of the circulation of qi. This name also means the flat hat of the ancient Chinese intelligentsia: a covering that also displays something.
Other The Lung is described as an umbrella for the five viscera. This point refers to the LU and can be used for all the different disorders of the LU where you need to go to a deeper level and where the body is in trouble because of the mind and spirit. You might use CV 21 and 22 for an asthma attack where the person is filling up and they need to be helped to open for a release of phlegm, etc. Otherwise, consider BL 13. This is an anti-smoking point. It helps with withdrawal symptoms, though it doesnt take away the desire to smoke. Its also good for insomniacs who have been on drugs and drug addiction in general. CV 22 in Leon Chaitows book is given as 1.5 ACI proximal to the superior edge of the suprasternal notch. Royston Low gives a non meridial point midway between CV 22 and 23. CTA

Name/ER Jade Pivot Xuan: Ideograms for Jade and to rotate, the influence that comes from rotation. Something made with Jade is precious and beautiful.
Ji: Ideograms of Jade and the very subtle mechanism of something. The imperceptible starting point of everything. A pearl which is not exactly round. A ring with pearls around it. Can represent the movement of planets or all the heavens; an armillary sphere, which is an ancient astronomical instrument.
So, this point is precious and represents an armillary sphere. In one of the five ancient texts, the armillary sphere is said to have been built by one of the legendary Emperors. It represents the whole rotating movement of energy. This point name reflects the idea of the whole distribution of the influences of Heavenly bodies rotating in their organization. They show us how to organize our Qi. This is more on the side of the movement of Qi (as opposed to other upper CV and lower CV points that more reflect the idea of richness/essences/form).
Ji gives the idea of no resting, no counter-current, no wearing out. Eternal, frictionless. This is a deep reference to the central pole (polar star) and the central axis. Sometimes you see the name of this point without the character for Jade. So the most important aspect of this name is this idea of an axis, of organization.
Use with CV 6 for panting/blockage in whole abdomen Use with CV 15 for panting/blockage in chest Use with KI 25 for blockage in chest and stiffness of neck.
Other This point is also called shimmering Pearl and Jade Pivot. Jade pivot refers to an anatomical description of the clavicle and sternum, referring in turn to an ancient astronomy instrument which turned on a jade pivot. This is here the neck starts to turn. Think about the neck, wind-food pipe, congestion and wind blockages with this point. CV 22 Heaven Rushing Out

Name/ER Celestial Chimney Tian: Heaven Tu: A kind of very impetuous motion. The rush of wind up a chimney when you ignite a fire. The fire must not be to high or low. This happens in the neckQi rises from the trunk to nourish the head. Tu is found also in ST 10 and LI 18.
CV 22 is about the movement of Qi. Heaven implies the relationship to Yang. Other texts call CV 22 Yu Hu Jade Door, which is more earth-related and therefore more yin. It is often true that when you have alternative names for a point, one is yin and the other yang. It is a reminder not to forget the other side. So CV 22 is an opening for the rising of Qi and a door for essential fluids. The point has to do with the throat and also the chest. What the head is to the body, the chest is to the trunk.
This is a powerful point and used often. According to one text there are four stages of effect in needling this point: 1. effect is at level of ST and SP, 2. effect goes deeper in abdomen, 3. water goes to the Bladder 4. patient feels Qi flowing in loins (around GV 2 or 3)
Other This point has a sense of movement, an opening. The neck makes the transition between earth and heaven. Its the place where spirits enter and leave, there are a lot of images of this. The neck is the chimney of the upper burner. It is associated with speech and creative self expression. This point is good for people living under a continual dark cloud, living in a cage with pain, hunger and frustration. They may feel cut off and depressed. This point is greater and faster than other windows. Physical indications: when a person is submerged in phlegm, blocked, are they clear enough there to throw out the rubbish of an asthma attack? This is a place that enables seeing; this area is vital for getting oxygen to the brain. You might think about this point and closing the window if someone comes to you completely spaced out and dazzled by heaven. CV 23 Angle Spring 2 Heaven Rushing Out
