The successful application of bio-inspired
algorithms to solve complex problems in electrical
power engineering have recently attracted the
academicians, researchers and practicing
engineers due to confirmed convergence, simple
computational steps and feasibility of
implementation on low cost digital controllers.
Several power electronic/power system design
aspects are now attempted and successfully solved
using bio-inspired optimization techniques.

In the restructured power system, power utilities
are forced to provide economical and reliable
solutions when electrical power is delivered to
consumers. Therefore optimal decisions have
become vital in power system planning, operation
and control. Bio- inspired algorithms such as
genetic algorithms, ant colony algorithms, and
swarm based algorithms etc. use intelligent search
to find the best solution in the solution domain.
Among these optimization algorithms, Firefly
Algorithm (FA) is regarded as an emerging and
promising method in several engineering
applications as is evident from literature.

This two day workshop aims in explaining the
fundamental concepts of the implementation of
Firefly Algorithm applications in power systems
and power electronics. Power systems scheduling
operation using SCILAB and hardware
implementation of FA on a microcontroller will be
demonstrated.
