TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, AUGUST 17, 2014

From the Desk of Fr. Underwood:

Fifteen years ago I was like most twenty-
something young adults. I looked at the world
with incredible aspirations for what was ahead.
I held an ideal image of what could be and
set my sights on great things. And I may have
even thought I could handle it all on my own.
When I headed off to seminary nearing the age
of 25, my life had gotten more focused on what
mattered most and I was determined to be a
priest. My dreams of priesthood were likely romanticized at that time to
include all of the joyful times sharing laughs and smiles with families at
baptisms and weddings. There was little consciousness about the
challenges. And in this image, when hearts were broken, I knew that the
presence of a priest could bring great peace and comfort by bringing
Christ there. I knew that I was called and I wanted to be there to help
people in their need. It was going to be great (and simple).
What I didn't think about was what it took financially and emotionally to
go through seminary. I had no idea how difficult it would be to
surrender myself to God - completely to trust and seek Gods will. I
had no idea it would cost so much for an education. And, my ideal
world seemed to miss what was needed to live the life of a priest in a
parish. All the support structures that the diocese provides to daily parish
ministry, the support provided to seminarians when in formation, the
support provided to missionary activities throughout our diocese and
world, the education of catechists and parish staff, pre-marital counseling
and preparation, retreats, help for those with family and marital
challenges the list can keep going. There is a lot that goes on through
our diocese that enables us at St. Lawrence to function each day. Many
of these things happen behind the scenes and without them, I dont think
we could do the work we do.
So how does the diocese fund all of the things they do for us? How
does the Bishops office provide that constant support to our ministries
and care for the missions throughout the world?
In the Universal Church, the norm for this is through a parish tax
where a percentage of all parish collections is sent to the bishop. This is
essential and important for all of the parish ministries to be supported.
We could never do it on our own.
In the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana, there is no tax on the parish.
Instead, the bi-annual Fruitful Harvest campaign allows us to intentionally
share from our hearts. In order for all of the ministries to continue, our
parish share for the 2014 campaign is $267,885.32.
At St. Lawrence, we have struggled for years to meet our goal and have
had to pull funds from parish ministries to make up the difference. I am
asking that each parishioner consider contributing something. It is well
worth it! Thank you for your generositytogether we can make a
difference through our parish and diocesan ministries.

RCIA - Precatechumenate or Inquiry
Conversion is a gradual process or a faith
journey. The first step in this journey is the
inquiry stage. This period may last a long
time. One needs to be aware that gradual conversion cannot
be measured in earth time, but in God's time. The aim of
this period is to awaken one's faith. It is characterized by:
Sharing stories about the Catholic faith.
Answering questions about why Catholics do the things
they do.
Proclaiming the message of salvation through the Word.
Introduction into parish life.
Once God's time has been fulfilled and the inquirer is ready
to take the first step in the process of conversion, they will
be invited to participate in The Rite of Acceptance into the
Order of Catechumens. Inquiry now meets every Sunday
at 9:30am in the St. Clare room at the Parish Office Bldg.
We would love for you to join us. You must attend inquiry
sessions before you can be invited to participate in the Rite
of Acceptance on October 26
th
at the 9:30am Mass.
RCIA meets Wednesday nights from 7:00-8:30pm in the
Social Hall. If you have questions please call the Parish
Office or Jim & Connie at 447-2939.

Q. Do we really have to come to Mass every Sunday and
Holy Days of Obligation? What if Im traveling?
A. Yes! Sunday is a very important day because we are
celebrating Jesus resurrection from the dead. Our
presence at Mass shows our dedication to Christ and to His
Church. It is really a matter of Justice. We owe God 1
hour each week on the day he has determined to praise and
thank him for all that he has given us. It is a serious
matter if we miss Sunday Mass or a Holy Day of
obligation. However, there can be instances when we may
have to miss Mass for a serious reason (i.e. we are very
sick, the weather prohibits travel, etc.) and we would not
be at fault. When traveling, it is a good idea to plan ahead
so that you can find a Mass to attend on Saturday night or
Sunday. You can go to www.masstimes.org and find all of
the Mass times of the Catholic Churches in the country.

parishioners are asked to prayerful consider if they

THE FAMILY THAT WORKS, PRAYS AND PLAYS TOGETHER
Can you help with
Childrens Liturgy of
the Word?
We are in need of adults to lead the Childrens Liturgy
of Word (CLOW) at the 11:15 Mass. The Ministry will
not start until we have a full rotation. CLOW is a
ministry where the children are called forward and
dismissed before the readings from Scripture and
gathered in the school library to hear the Word of God
at a level of understanding for them. Volunteers are
asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to Mass, prepare for
the readings of the week and have a reflection to share
with the children. Confirmation students assist with the
children and Scripture readings. All Volunteers will
receive training and reflection materials. If you are
interested or need more information contact Ryan
Hillman at hillman@catholicweb.com or 423-2396.
