Course Description

The student will use variables in setting up equations. The student will translate words and problems into
algebraic equations. The student will add and subtract positive and negative numbers by using a number line
and algebraic rules. The student will multiply, divide, distribute, and use the reciprocal of real numbers. The
student will solve equations for one variable by using addition/subtraction, multiplication/division, or a
combination of transformations. The student will add, subtract, and multiply polynomials. The student will
solve problems involving rate-time-distance and area. The student will factor integers, monomials, and
polynomials. The student will simplify, multiply/divide, add/subtract algebraic fractions. The student will do
ratio, proportion, and percent. The student will use a number of methods to solve systems of linear equations.

Domain Standards

1. Students will use numbers, number sense, and number relationships.

2. Students will use a variety of tools and techniques of measurement in a problem-solving situation.
3. Students will use algebraic methods to investigate, model, and interpret patterns involving numbers and
graphs.

Performance Standards

Advanced. The student will show a complete understanding of numbers and number relationships. The student
always listens and follows directions and only uses tools/manipulatives as instructed. The student uses efficient
and effective strategies in solving problems. The student consistently and effectively uses algebraic methods.
The student will regularly connect math to other content areas and to real life situations.

Proficient. The student will show a substantial understanding of numbers and number relationships. The
student typically listens and follows directions and uses tools/manipulatives as instructed most of the time. The
student uses effective strategies in solving problems. The student typically uses effective algebraic methods.
The student will occasionally connect math to other content areas and to real life situations.
