the University of Munich, Germany in 1976 and 1984 respectively. From 1976 till 1980 he was
with AEG, R&D-center for Power Electronics- in Berlin. In 1984 he joined Siemens Semicon-
ductor Division which became Inneon Techno logies AG in 1999. Since this time he has been
working on Power Semiconductor & Power ICs in different functions and responsibilities. As a senior principal he
was responsible for system engineering of industrial technologies and for the time being located in Munich. He
published over 300 technical papers and has many patents in these elds. In 2001 he was nominated to become
Professor for System Integration at the University of Ilmenau (Germany). He is the president of the ECPE (European
Center of Power Electronics), an IEEE Fellow, a member of German Academy of Science and received several best
paper and innovation awards.
The megatrends of our modern society such as energy efciency, E-Mobility and SMART
Grid is asking for green power electronic solutions. Power semiconductor devices are an en-
abling technology to meet these requirements. The major electrical improvement of the new
generation of power devices is coming from the overall silicon utilization (vertical & horizon-
tal device optimization). The reliability and ruggedness of these new power emiconductors is
driven by an advanced chip interfacing and packaging technology. For ultra high efciency
and ultra high power density solutions WB-devices are being developed. However it has to
be considered that the application engineer is faced with new challenges of how to manage
all the parasitics, thermal management and circuit set up.

A New Approach to Single-Phase Seven-
Level PWM Inverter with Reduced Number
of Switches
M.Sc. Martin Breus Meier,
Federal University of Technology Paran, Curitiba, BR
A single-phase evenly spaced seven-level PWM inverter
is presented with a new approach to reduce the number
of used switches normally found in multi-level inverters.
The topology operational principles and the switching
logic are analyzed. Two series voltage sources with a
full-brigde inverter have a bidirectional switch is added
between each leg center and the voltage center tap in
order to have a symmetrical multilevel inverter.

Overload Capability of the Modular Multilevel
Matrix Converter for Feeding High Torque
Low Speed Drives
Dipl.-Ing. Felix Kammerer,
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Karlsruhe, D
In drive systems, the semiconductors of conventional
converters must be dimensioned for the maximum
torque. This results in a converter over-sizing even for
short time overload requirements near standstill, e.g.
for mills in the mining industry. In contrast the Modular
Multilevel Matrix Converter (M3C) has the character-
istic that the installed switching power can be shared
between the input and output side. Hence a overload
capability up to 200 % of the nominal value can be
reached at low speeds without additional efforts. This
paper explains the method to use the overload capabil-
ity and analyzes the overload torque limits in the whole
speed range.

Single-Input Multi-Output Insulated Bidirectional
Cuk-Converter
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Mario Pacas,
Universitt Siegen Lehrstuhl Prof. Stevens, Siegen, D
This paper presents the design and implementation of
a single-input multi-output (SIMO) insulated bidirec-
tional dc/dc Cuk converter featuring high power den-
sity. The system is intended to be used for feeding the
dc-links of modular multilevel inverters e.g. cascaded
H-bridge (CHB) topologies for applications in drives
or systems of renewable energy generation. In this
proposal the bidirectional Cuk converter is designed to
operate with a single-input and six insulated outputs.
The isolation is achieved by using six high frequency
transformers connected in parallel at the primary side
while the six secondary windings are separated and
can be freely connected. Experimental results obtained
on a 6kW laboratory setup are presented to verify the
converter performance in both forward and backward
modes of operation.

New Semiconductors Solutions
Improve the Efciency in AC Drives
Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Klaus Vogel,
Inneon Technologies AG, Warstein, D
New standards for power losses measurement for
variable speed drives are presented. The power losses
of typical variable speed drives are analyzed and future
alternatives to increasetheir efciency investigated.
Solutions with Silicon (Si) technology in Three-Level
topology or Silicon Carbide (SiC) switches in Two-Level
circuit are possibilities to increase the inverter
efciency.

Efciency Optimized Control of Brushless
DC Motors Applied to Cyclic Loads
M.Eng. Roberto Andrich,
Embraco Electronics, Joinville, BR
This paper describes a method to optimize the efciency
of Brushless DC motors applied to cyclical loads, e.g.
gas compression systems, which have a much higher
torque during the compression cycle than the suction
cycle. This torque prole causes distortions on the motor
current, increasing its RMS value which decreases
motor efciency. In order to increase the motor ef-
ciency it is proposed a method to eliminate the current
distortions and so to minimize its RMS value by means
of the adjustment of the voltage applied to the motor
according to the ratio between the instantaneous and
average motor speed. The results show a reasonable
energy saving on gas compression systems with this
efciency optimized control.

Stochastic System Identication Method
Applied To a BLDC Motor
B.Eng. Ana Iaremczuk,
Federal University of Technology Paran, Curitiba, BR
System Identication is a very interesting method of
modeling due to use only system data to build the math-
ematical model. However, if these data are corrupted
by noise and the identication method doesnt treat
it properly, the model may not represent the system
dynamics correctly. Stochastic models should be used
to avoid this issue. This work demonstrates this charac-
teristic by a BLDC motor stochastic identication.

Dr. Emerson Giovani Carati,
Federal University of Technology Paran, Pato Branco, BR
This paper presents an analysis and implementation
of a sensorless vector control strategy to three-phase
induction motors (TIM). The strategy includes an IFOC
approach and an MRAS estimator to implement a
closed loop speed drive without the use of mechanical
sensors. Moreover, a ux optimization algorithm is in-
cluded in order to reduce global electrical losses in the
drive system such the required power to drive TIM is
signicantly reduced. A drive platform is used to verify
the performance of the proposed controller and estima-
tor approach. Numerical and experimental results are
included to demonstrate the good accuracy and fast
response of the driving system.

M.Sc. Paulo Sergio Dainez,
State University of Campinas, Campinas, BR
This paper presents a decomposition technique, named
Three Orthogonal Base System Approach. It is de-
signed for asymmetrical double-star machines. Each
of the three orthogonal base systems generates two
reference vectors for the drive set. The technique can
be seen as an enhancement of the common decompo-
sition approach, which allows to apply a fundamen-
tal reference voltage without any additional harmonics
for low computational costs. The new approach is vali-
dated by digital simulations and experimental tests.

has to transform a voltage of about 8 kV into a lower
voltage of about 400 volts covering a power range of

In all areas of research and development the advent of revolutionary inventions initiate evo-
lutionary periods. This is not a new phenomenon however, the globalization and the existing
demand for publications -as important criterion for measuring the quality of the research out-
put- has changed the R&D landscape. In Power Electronics the innovation and driving forces
for R&D arise in multiple disciplines: semiconductors, control theory, control electronics as
well as in the intended applications. This makes the fascination and also the challenge of
Power Electronics.
The presentation deals with the arising sources of innovation together with the challenges
that Power Electronics faces in R&D in the industrial environment as well as in academia
and how the interactions between revolution, evolution and applications lead to the deni-
tion of the road maps for each research group and to a process of innovation. The resulting
risks and the chances for R&D are presented and discussed.

Performance Comparison of Nanocrystalline
with Ferrite in a 40kW 20kHz Application
B.Eng. Kapila Warnakulasuriya,
Carroll & Meynell Transformers Ltd, Stockton-On-Tees, UK
In this paper the performance of Nanocrystalline mate-
rial in comparison with ferrite is evaluated for a high
frequency high power transformer application. The
major advantage of Nanocrystalline material over
ferrite is its ability to go for higher design ux densi-
ties. However, this is limited with increased losses
occurring with the increase of operating frequency.
The situation is studied for a 40kW, 20kHz application.
Samples of both versions are developed and a perfor-
mance evaluation is made on the application. Based
on the practical outcome a comparison is made in
terms of power density per physical parameters such
as weight and volume. The cost and manufacturability
are also discussed.

alternative for highly reliable and cost efcient power
electronic devices. The p Pack Technology is used
to embed thin bare dies (MOSFETs or IGBTs) into a
construction of lead frames and additional routing
levels. First results from publicly funded project show
outstanding results in terms of thermal dissipation, low
parastic inductances and reliability.

Thin Wafer IGBT, Relaxed Field Cathode Diode and
New Material Stack Contribute to Doubled Current
Handling in Conventional Power Module
Nicholas Clark,
Powerex, Inc., Youngwood, USA
Power electronics applications demand ever-higher ef-
ciency and density. A thin wafer IGBT chip realizes these
demands with reduced losses. A Relaxed Filed Cathode
diode has lower Qrr compared to conventional diodes.
Reduced Qrr leads to better turn-on efciency in the
IGBTs. A new ceramic substrate allows for greater chip
area and reduced thermal impedance. These changes
allow the max current to be doubled for a given module
size, while its weight can be reduced by nearly half.

Conservative Power Theory
M.Sc. Tiago Davi Curi Busarello,
State University of Campinas, BR
This paper presents a Three-Phase Intelligent Battery-
Based Storage (IBBS) able to perform in four different
modes. The modes consist of charging and discharging
the IBBS, injecting active power into the grid and oper-
ating as active lter simultaneously. The intelligence
comes from a decision algorithm which denes the
IBBS operation mode and it is based on the price of
the energy, on the battery state-of-charge (SOC) and
on a power quality (PQ) requirement.

Solid State Transformers in Future Traction and Smart Grids
M. Sc. Gabriel Ortiz
ETH Zrich Power Electronic Systems Laboratory, Zrich, CH
Gabriel Ortiz (M10) received his M.Sc. degree in Electronics Engineering from Universidad
Tcnica Federico Santa Mara, Valparaso, Chile, in December 2008. He received his Ph.D.
degree from the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zrich, Switzerland in 2013 where he
worked with solid-state transformer technology and mainly with the implementation of the
DC-DC converters integrating the medium frequency conversion stage. The focus of his current research is in
solid-state transformers for future Smart Grid implementations and traction solutions. Specically, his interests
are in modeling optimization and design of high-power DC-DC converters operated in the medium frequency range
with focus on modeling of soft-switching processes in IGBTs, unidirectional topologies and isolation properties
of the medium frequency stage, among others.
Solid-State Transformers (SSTs), i.e. high power three-phase or single-phase AC-AC con-
verters with integrated medium frequency (MF) isolation are providing in contrast to
passive line-frequency (LF) transformers full control of the power ow as well as low
construction volume and are therefore key components of future Smart Grids, e.g. for inter-
facing medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV) power distribution network, and in trac-
tion where a great benet in efciency and power density is achieved due to the operation
at MF level. First, the history, basic properties and scaling laws of passive transformers are
briey reviewed and the evolution of the SST concept from early basic structures to complex
modern arrangements featuring also a low voltage DC port is described and possible appli-
cations in traction/transportation and mircrogrids integrating renewable energy sources
and battery storage systems are discussed.
Concerning SSTs for Smart Grid applications, the multiple concepts proposed in the litera-
ture are grouped into distinct categories, depending on their controllability and level of mod-
ularity concerning the partitioning of the overall power conversion function, the constitution
of the three-phase property and the handling of the medium voltage. In this context also the
series resonant operation of the Dual Active Bridge in discontinuous current mode which is
frequently employed in SST structures is explained and related issues of zero current switch-
ing of IGBTs are discussed. The different previously proposed concepts for SSTs in traction
which lead to the main considered three-stage input-series output-parallel structure, are
presented with focus on the key aspects of the practical implementations. Further design
considerations concerning MF transformer design, isolation, ux balancing and MV grid EMI
regulations, among others, are addressed.
Finally, an overall critical evaluation of the SST concept against a passive LF transformer and
a LF transformer with series connected rectier-inverter stage is given which highlights the
challenge of simultaneously achieving a high functionality, high efciency and low volume
while ensuring reasonable costs and high reliability which is a prerequisite for employing
SSTs in future power systems.

density of circuits increases, so does the need to develop effective methods of thermal
management and packaging. This need arises not only in the context of high-speed com-
puters but also, in future UPS, power supplies, Converters, Variable speed motor drives,
RF and Microwave ampliers and automotive applications. This course helps engineers to
develop thermal management knowledge that address both emerging thermal challenges
and signicantly improve thermal performance. This course is designed to provide partici-
pants with an over view of the necessary tools to perform thermal modelling and analysis
of electronic systems. The fundamental and applied methods for a successful design are
covered, and modelling tools are reviewed.
The course outline will include the following topics:

Modern energy conversion equipment is required to reach unprecedented performance
indexes in order to meet with todays energy delivery standards. From an end users per-
spective, the main targeted performance indexes are the total energy losses (efciency),
oor space requirement (power density) and failure rate (reliability) among others, all of
which must be met while complying with stringent EMI compatibility directives. These sys-
tem-oriented performance gures are translated into specic requirements from the power
electronics-based converter internal components, such as semiconductor switching devices
and passive components. These high system- and component-oriented performance gures
must be veried experimentally through highly accurate measurement equipment in order to
ensure a suitable quality of the system.

Analysis of Parallel Connected VSIs in UPS Appli-
cations: Single/Three-phase and Three/Four-wire
Cesar Augusto Arbugeri,
Federal University of Santa Catarina, Florianpolis, BR
This paper describes relevant experimental results on
a control strategy that can be applied in the parallel
operation of single-phase, three-phase three-wire and
three-phase four-wire voltage source inverters (VSIs).
All of then structures are used in UPS, thus the strategy
is adequate for the parallel-connected of UPS. The
proposed control system consists of two loops, one for
parallelism and another for output voltage, both inside of
each VSI. The parallelism control employs the feedback
of the output current in each VSI and thus controls its
power ow to the load. The strategy works based on
a bus communication (CAN, analog signal, etc), which
synchronizes the voltage reference of all inverters. There
is no exchange of information among the VSIs regarding
their operation points and the information ow occurs
only in one direction, from the voltage reference bus
to the VSI, which becomes the communication simple
and fast. The control technique was veried through
experimental results in single-phase, three-phase three-
wire and three-phase four-wire VSIs, and all of then
it ensures the proper sharing of the load current and
avoids current circulation among the inverters.

Extending the Operation of Asymmetrical Cascaded
Multilevel Converters Under Fault Conditions
Fernanda de Morais Carnielutti,
Federal University of Santa Maria, Santa Maria, BR
This work proposes a Space Vector (SV) overmodula-
tion strategy to extend the operation of asymmetrical
cascaded multilevel converters under fault conditions.
With this algorithm, the converter is able to operate
with a wider range of modulation indexes and fault
conditions, when compared to previous reported
strategies. The modulation aims to limit the converter
switching losses and synthesize fairly balanced output
line-to-line voltages. Simulation results are shown to
demonstrate and validate the proposed SV overmodu-
lation strategy.

Dynamic Performance of a Back-to-Back HVDC
based on MMC Switched at Line Frequency
Braulio Chuco,
Federal University of Rio de Janeiro COPPE/POLI, Rio de Janeiro, BR
This paper focuses on the dynamic performance of
Back-to-Back HVDC system based on Modular Multi-
level Converter (MMC) Switched at Line Frequency. The
MMC sub-modules IGBTs are switched at line frequency
in steady and transient state using Pulse Position Mod-
ulation (PPM) strategy to guarantee the sub-module
capacitors voltage balance. The circulating current at
twice the line frequency in the MMC leg is controlled.
It is controlled through the compensation of decoupled
d-q circulating current control in the main current vector
control. HVDC system based on MMC dynamic perfor-
mance is evaluated using the PSCAD tool. It is shown
that the switching at the line frequency to control the
active and reactive power and to balance the capacitors
voltage work satisfactorily during steady-state and
during fault conditions.

in UPS systems. Based on semiconductor power loss
measurements and subsequent calculations, the losses
and efciency for a typical application are compared for
Si-IGBT and SiC solutions using various topologies. The
resulting costs for investment and operation are esti-
mated for a typical 250kVA UPS system with both chip

At the dawn of another leap in the evolution of power semiconductors, old problems are
being solved but new challenges are emerging. Meanwhile, as the world hunger for energy
continues to escalate at an unprecedented pace, traditional and renewable sources of energy
continue to be placed far away from the large metropolitan areas making the efcient trans-

Module Integrated Solar Battery Charger
Employing the Zeta Converter
Mrio L. da Silva Martins,
Federal University of Santa Maria, Santa Maria, BR
This paper proposes a comparative analysis between
two Zeta converter topologies applied to a battery char-
ger using a single photovoltaic panel. The comparison
takes into account the losses in the magnetic compo-
nents. To provide a fair comparison a single design
guidelines are employed to both topologies. It accounts
for the PV module and battery bank characteristics,
considering the MPPT and the charging method ad-
opted. The battery charging method is based on the
Constant Current/Constant Voltage (CC/CV) method
with a Perturb and Observe (P&O) maximum power
point tracking (MPPT) algorithm. The MPPT mode is
off in the cases where the battery charger reaches the
maximum charge current or the equalization voltage
that drives the converter operation to the CC mode or
the CV mode, respectively. Since the Zeta converter
operates in CCM mode during CC mode and undergoes
DCM in CV mode, the design of the converter must
ensure that charge current is always positive, even in
DCM operation.
