The International Print Project brings together works of 41 artists and printmakers from 13 Middle Eastern countries includ- ing: Jordan, Lebanon, Bahrain, Syria, Iraq, Oman, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Yemen and Egypt. The exhibit was curated by Dr. Arafat Al-Niam and the American artist and printmaker Barbara Mason; the International Print Project will celebrate global culture and widen inter-cultural dialogue while demonstrating the richness of the printmaking medium. The International Print Project is a collaboration between the Jordanian Applied Science Uni- versity Department of Fine Art and Print Arts Northwest in cooperation with Dr. Jean Campbell of the Middle Eastern Studies Center of Portland State University. The project includes a primary exhibition in Portland, Oregon of printmaking from a new generation of graphic artists from the Middle East. In return, work from the professional artists of Print Arts Northwest will be exhib- ited in Jordan and other countries in the Middle East. The exhibition consists of work from Dr. Al-Niams workshops of the last three years. It is orga- nized to promote the art and practice of printmaking in the Middle East; these workshops are critically acclaimed as the most important in the region. The selected works for this project offer an insight into the development of printmaking in both the Middle East and the United States. They present new ideas, approaches and a combination of techniques and showcase the artists exploration of their medium. The presentation of new techniques and tendencies in printmaking can foster cultural links between American and Middle Eastern Artists. Dr. Arafat Al-Niam PhD, MFA. Founded in 1981, Northwest Print Council dba Print Arts Northwest is a 501 (c)(3) corporation. Print Arts Northwest, (PAN), the ofce and gallery of the NWPC, has played a signicant role as a regional resource for printmakers, students, print collectors and art patrons who believe in the value of preserving the ne art tradition of printmaking. Our mission is to support contemporary ne art printmaking by promoting the practice, appreciation and collection of original prints through exhibitions and educational programs. PAN is located in Portlands Pearl District in the heart of the art gallery area. The opportunity to bring work from the Middle East to Portland manifested itself with an email to a long time internet acquaintance, Dr. Arafat Al-Niam, originally from Amman, Jordan. Barbara Mason invited Dr. Al-Niam to send work to Portland from the Middle East and he was very excited to do so, seeing this opportunity as a cross-cultural artistic project for artists to understand each other more readily and appreciate the humanity in each other by the sharing of their work. This International Print Project is conceived as an ongoing exchange of work between many countries and the United States with Dr. Al-Niam as the facilitator on the Middle Eastern end. Representing 13 countries and showing 43 pieces of work, this exhibition shows prints of artists fairly new to the medium and those who have been practicing the craft for a long time. PAN welcomes this unusual chance to showcase work not seen before in our area and we look forward to exchanging the work of Northwest Artists with Jordan and other Middle Eastern Countries. This exhibition is sponsored by PAN, the Applied Science University of Amman, Jordan and the Middle Eastern Studies Department of Portland State University. Please visit our website for current information, www.printartsnw.org PAN is a 501 (c)(3) educational nonprot.
