WELCOME TO THE B2 COURSE

TODAY, BECAUSE UNFORTUNATELY I CANT SPEAK

TO YOU I WANT TO DO THREE THINGS:
1) SHOW YOU THE MATERIALS FOR THE COURSE
2) SHOW THE WIKI
3) DO A PROTOTYPE OF THE COMPUTER TEST FOR
YOU TO PRACTISE.
1) MATERIALS FOR THE COURSE
A)THE COURSE BOOK
The book for this course is:
New Inside Out Upper Intermediate (Macmillan) You can
buy it at Quiedit/ The Bookshop or online
www.amazon.iwww.amazon.co.uk
For lessons you need the Students Book but there is allso a
workbook if you would like to do extra language practice.
(Buy the version with the key so that you can work
independently.)
You should try to have the book for next week.

B) THE WIKI
Some of the work we do is also online and there is a wiki that
we use all the time (some of you know this because you used it
last year in B1)
Can you remember the address?

http://www.hartledistancelearning wikispaces com (NOT @)

This address takes you to the home page of the wiki
You can scroll down the navigation bar until you come to
B2 home
That is where you should start
The e-learning site is old. I stopped using it because it has a
vicous firewall which stops me putting videos etc. online. That
is why I am using the wiki
BUT
The old courses are still on the e-learning site, so, if you want
to look at them you can:
Register with your matriculation number and password
The first time you go on the site you will have to put in a
password. What do you think it is?
Haggis (Only the first time)
In fact, however, you dont need to use the elearning site
because I have put the most important material on the wiki.
You can, if you want to but you dont have to.
The third link is the most important because that goes to the
wiki, which we use all the time, both in class and outside class.
The other references are to extra useful materials.
I suggested the macmillan global workbook, because it is very
interesting, you can use it on your computer or print out PDF
files, and there are videos and audio files that you can listen to
on your computer or download to an mp3 player or ipod etc.

HOWEVER
Im not sure if you can buy the workbook separately from the
students book, and if you cant I wouldnt buy both there is
a lot of material in any case in your course book.
The other books are good reference books and the Maximiser
has good exam practice materials.
OK
Those are the materials.
ACTIVITY TO DO FOR TOMORROW:
Apart from buying the book, of course,
Go to the wiki
Look at page B2 1 Home Page
Download this document:
The B2 Exam (Read it to see what is in your exam and come
tomorrow with any questions about things you dont
understand)
OK
Now lets try a prototype of the computer test.
Do you know where to find the test prototypes?
Put any name in for the prototypeit doesnt matter which
Haggis studies all languages so she has the choice of all the
prototype tests

We, howerver, will look at B2. This isnt a test so Im going to

show you the first exercise and you can have 20 minutes (I
have a timer) to do it (You can do it with the person sitting
next to you if you want to (in class not in the real exam)
Learning from each other is a very positive thing.

Enable = its a verb (It make to make something possible for you.
Studying hard will enable you to pass your exams. (for example)
Bubbly (Maybe you dont know this word???) But you know that a
case of champagne has been mentioned earlier, and you know what
bubbles areso you can imagine that Bubbly is probably a
synonym of Champagne. When you do this type of exercies make the
text work for you. You can often understand a lot of new words
from the context.
(There are 10 auestions and you need approx. 60% to pass. The
percentage is not related to every exercise but to the whole exam
globally, nut it is a good idea to have a goal of 60% for each exercise.
How did you do? ) 60% or more? Less?
"relax" "which" "least" "do" "along" "in" "to do" "heart" "way"
"who" "central" "what"
"will be returned" "nearby" "long" "will return" "at" "relax yourself"

In English you relax You dont relax yourself (It isnt reflexive) .
Be careful with these false friends Little differences between one
language and another. (long/along is another example of this)
10) will return because this is a type of prediction of what will
happen after your relaxing weekend at the lake.
The same applies as before, with the marks. Try to get at least 60%.
How did you do? 60% or more? Less? How much? (OK well, dont
despair, keep developing your grammar or vocabulary? Which do you
think causes you more trouble? Maybe the holidays but at this stage
you need to develop your vocabulary and lexical structure perhaps
more than traditional grammar. Youve studied the Present Perfect
three million times so maybe you could look at something elselike
verbs that are relflexive or not (relax is a good example of this)
Look at the reading text online and then well look at each question
singly. So, first of all, just read the text.
OK look at question 1 and see if you can answer it with your partner.
OK, I can see that everyone has had enough for this morning, so well
stop here. Sorry about the silent lesson, but reading is quite good for
you anyway
See you tomorrow.
