It was another good year for the nations largest 100 accounting firms,
according to INSIDE Public Accountings (IPA) 23
rd
annual report on the
IPA 100. In fact, it appears as if the growth reported last year was no fluke, as
this year represents three consecutive years of growth since the downturn that
lasted through 2010, and carried over to some extent to 2011.

Vision without execution is hallucination. Thomas A. Edison

While organic revenue growth averaged 5.2% versus 5.6% last year, dont be
fooled by a less robust growth rate. In many ways, firms enjoyed a better year
than the one before. Last years uptick followed a dismal 2011, with growth of
1.0%, so the increase in organic revenue this year is noteworthy, given the
higher bar set in 2012.

Twenty-four firms, excluding the Big 4, are reporting $100 million or more in
revenues. With five firms reporting revenues of $90 million and above, we
could see more than 29 firms in the $100 million club within the next few years.

The Big 4 had strong gains, growing $3.5 billion in revenues this year, or
10.5%, for a total of $37.2 billion. Last years numbers showed an 8.7%
increase of $2.7 billion after a down year. The current snapshot may indicate
that clients are seeking more services since the
economic downturn.

IPA is pleased to continue its 23-year history of
reporting on the nations largest 100 firms. IPAs
independent rankings and report is among the longest-
running, most accurate and up-to-date report of the
nations largest accounting firms. I PA

growth, excluding mergers, was 5.6% compared with the previous years
lackluster 1.0% growth. Firm leaders see less demand to lower fees and more
opportunities. In the 2011 report, 40 of the IPA 100 reported a contraction in
revenues; this year, only six firms were in negative territory. Thats a sign that
things are picking up and an indicator of the professions ability to rebound.

After a down year in 2010, the Big 4 came back in 2011 with an overall
growth rate of 8.7%, adding $2.7 billion to the top line. The Big 4 collectively
accounted for $33.644 billion in revenues. Total revenue of the IPA 100 grew
to $46.024 billion, up from $42.672 billion last year, or an increase of 7.8%.
The Big 4 account for 73% of the revenue base among
the IPA 100. As an aggregate group, the other 96 firms
added $668 million in revenue to the top line,
accounting for $12.380 billion in revenues, up 5.7%
from both mergers and organic growth.

The minimum net revenue for the IPA 100 this year is
$30.9 million, up $2.7 million from last year and
surpassing the high of 2009. IPA

THE IPA 2011 TOP 100 ACCOUNTING FIRMS

INSIDE Public Accounting (IPA) is pleased to present the 21
st
annual report on
the nations Top 100 accounting firms. IPAs independent rankings are among
the longest-running, most accurate and up-to-date for the nations largest
accounting firms. [EXCERPTED IN PART]

Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are
certain to miss the future. John F. Kennedy

Top-line growth continues to be a challenge for the Top 100 firms. Although
fine-tuning their inner workings contributed to increased stability and a bigger
bottom line, half of the Top 100 firms that reported no merger/acquisition saw a
decline in charge hours, compounding the decreases of 2009. Firms specializing
in government contract work were among the few that saw opportunities to add
to the charge hour workload.

Firms clearly took more control over bottom-line management, with two-thirds
increasing net fees collected per charge hour and 56% increasing margins over
last year. Net income for the group was up 3.0%, but net income per equity
partner continued a downward slide a full 17% lower than the peak in 2008.

A gap clearly exists between those who are doing well and those who are
struggling to right the ship. Firms in the top quartile of net income per equity
partner (NIPP) saw that metric grow by 18% over
the previous year, while those in the bottom
quartile saw NIPP decline by 3.0%. Leverage in top
quartile firms is up slightly 58% are hiring to take
advantage of opportunities and 40% reported
reducing the number of equity partners. Leverage in
the bottom quartile has decreased 4.0%. Average
staff for the top quartile firms was up 1.0%, while
the bottom quartile experienced a 1.0% decline.

Forty percent of the Top 100 reduced the number of equity partners during the reporting
period, either due to retirement or by firing under-performing partners. Among the 33 non-
national firms reporting a reduction in partners (159 partners to be exact), 27% terminated at
least one equity partner, and 55% had one or more partners retire during the reporting year.

Net fees for the Top 100 represent more than $40 billion, with the non-Big 4 representing
$11.7 billion. For the 70 firms that reported net income figures, more than $1.6 billion in
income is shared by more than 2,900 owners and 25,000 staff. With continued focus on the
top and bottom lines, many of the Top 100 are poised for success in the coming years. IPA

THE INSIDE PUBLIC ACCOUNTING
2010 TOP 100 ACCOUNTING FIRMS

INSIDE Public Accounting (IPA) is pleased to present the 20
th
annual report on
the nations Top 100 accounting firms. IPAs independent rankings are among
the longest-running, most accurate and up-to-date of the nations largest
accounting firms.

Benjamin Franklin may have discovered electricity, but it is the man who
invented the meter who made the money. Earl Wilson, Columnist.

Resiliency, Adaptability And Creativity
Guide The IPA Top 100

Strategy drives tactics. Tactics drive headlines. The
headline this year focuses on the ability of the IPA
Top 100 to move, pivot, change and adapt.
Throughout the country, strategic discussions took
place among owners to figure out how to react to
the challenging economy and how to best position
their firms for success once a recovery begins.

TIGHTEN THE BELT! was the battle cry for
most. But beyond that, strategies were as varied as
the firms that pursued them.

How do we preserve partner compensation? Scale back or get rid of
unproductive owners, as 16% reported. How do we shore up the bottom line?
Reduce staff, as 60% reported, or close some offices, as 18% reported. How
do we demonstrate leadership and protect the staff? Require partners to take
pay cuts while keeping staff pay neutral, as 35% reported. How do we remain
independent and grow? Merge in smaller firms, as 20% reported. How do we
compete at the highest levels? Re-brand with an international presence, as
New York City-based WeiserMazars did, or create a merger of equals, as
Reading, Pa.-based Beard Miller Company and Philadelphia-based Parente
Randolph did. Merge with larger Top 100 firms, as both Vienna, Va.-based

Beers + Cutler, and Boston-based Caturano and Company did. News on the street is
there are more Top 100 mergers in the works.

As a group, the IPA Top 100 had come to expect double-digit growth in revenue and
income for most of this (past) decade. Now, regardless if you are on the East Coast, West
Coast or in the center of the country, flat is good. Maintaining revenue, income and
compensation was the target during the past year. Thirty-five firms reported a drop in
equity partner compensation this past year.

Most are very optimistic about the future. After belt-tightening, thinning out less
productive staff and partners, and making the proper integration of systems and processes
from mergers over the past few years, firms are poised for a quick recovery. Having
learned the hard lessons of the Great Recession, IPA Top 100 firms are better prepared for
the future and are eagerly awaiting the turnaround to a stronger world economy. IPA

For the complete list of the IPA Top 100, see pages 3-6. IPA provides both the fiscal month and year-end data for all
IPA Top 100 firms and ranks firms by net revenue, unless otherwise noted. For ranking purposes, all IPA Top 100 firms
must be able to show that they have a percentage of attest fees in order to be considered an accounting firm.

th
annual report
*
on the
nations Top 100 accounting firms. IPAs rankings are one of the longest running,
most accurate and up-to-date rankings of the nations largest accounting firms.

In The Middle Of Difficulty Lies Opportunity. Albert Einstein

It comes as no surprise to anyone that the economic downturn has hit the
profession. But how hard? Where? When?

For the IPA Top 100 firms, the four-year run of double-digit growth has
ended, but they still report a respectable 7.13% growth rate on average. Net
income growth, however, is flat as we moved from an almost 15% growth rate
last year to not quite maintaining that level (actually a slight negative: -0.12%)
this year 2008-09.

The story gains a clearer focus when we start looking regionally. Firms in the
Great Plains and the Great Lakes saw net income grow slightly this year. But
firms in the Northeast, Atlantic, Southeast and the West where there had
been substantial growth in the past few years all saw a decline in net
income.

Two years ago, in August 2007, IPA spotlighted firms in the West and referred
to the good life, with growth rates sizzling above 30% and net income up a
whopping 38%. Twenty-four months later, Western firms are still growing at
6.8%, but net income is down 3% over last year.

Profit margins for the Top 100 as a group dipped below
30% for the first time during this decade, with average net
income for the Top 100 at 29% of net fees. Also indicative
of the downturn percentage billable by partners (45%)
settled in at a new low for the decade.

(For the complete list of the IPA Top 100, see pages 2-5.)
*IPA provides both the fiscal month and year-end data for all IPA Top 100 firms and ranks
firms by net revenue, unless otherwise stated.

forward at a clip of almost 20%, down from 25% growth last year but still
exceptionally strong. [More detailed information is highlighted in the full published
newsletter.]

But amid all the good news are small signs that the sizzling growth over
the past four years is beginning to slow. This year, 10 IPA Top 100 firms
reported a loss in net income and four firms reported a loss in net revenue,
mainly due to divestitures of business service lines and losses of larger
clients due to mergers, acquisitions, etc. !

More detailed information on all the topics covered in the IPA Top 100 are
highlighted in the Special Edition Issue [August 2008]. For your copy,

Its no surprise that succession planning, staffing, retention of staff,
training and growth remain top challenges in 08. A few noteworthy items
uncovered in this years IPA survey: the economy, the waning impact of
SOX, and the ever-increasing requirements of industry standards.

News of the downturn in our economy is all around us, with higher costs
for fuel, energy and health care challenging businesses across the U.S.
Consultants are predicting that the golden age of accounting is coming
to an end. Is there any evidence of this in the aggregate financials of firms
across the U.S.? Is the economic slowdown showing up on the books yet?

Overall, the average growth rate of the 2008 IPA Top 100 is still an impressive 14%,
compared to last years 15% growth rate. However, some signs indicate a slowdown.

Takin It To The Bank: IPA 100 Continue Record
Growth; Fine-Tune Efficiencies To Sustain Growth

When asked recently how business was going, a tax partner in his 40s at
a large regional firm smiled like a Cheshire cat and told IPA, How can
you not make a lot of money in this environment?

His peers around the country seem to agree. IPA 100 firms on average
grew net fees by 15.04% for FY06-07, a dizzying three-year run of more
than 15% growth each year that has not been seen in the history of the
IPA 100. Seventy-four of the IPA 100 firms report double-digit growth
and 23 of those firms report growth over 20%.

Entry-level salaries (0- to 2-year staff) have surpassed $50,000 for the
first time in IPA 100 history, reflecting the supply and demand pressures
of staffing for such strong growth. Average profit margin (income as a
percent of net fees), a reflection of better managing top and bottom line
costs, continues to creep up, from 32.7% last year to 32.9% this year.

Net income per partner is flirting with the $500,000 mark for the first time
at $495,170, it is 10% higher than last year. Average partner compensation
climbed another 8% to a record $461,272, up over $100,000 from the
numbers reported just three years ago.

The Schonbraun McCann Group, N.Y., takes top honors in growth at a
whopping 54% increase in net fees, shooting up 27 positions in the IPA
100 ranking to No. 48. SMG skyrocketed from $29 million in net revenue
last year to $45.5 million this year with a laser-beam focus on building an
impressive real estate niche and no mergers.

We have built our entire firm almost totally organically, brick by brick,
and created the only vertical accounting and consulting firm in the U.S.
that is 100% dedicated to real estate and finance, Bruce Schonbraun,
MP of SMG tells IPA. Weve established a brand name for ourselves, he
says, and expects a greater than 40% growth rate again in 2007.

Only two firms on the IPA 100 reported a loss of revenue this year over last
year. Goldenberg Rosenthal of Jenkintown, Penn., (No. 57; net revenue of
$41.1 million) and Carlin Charron & Rosen of Westborough, Mass., (No.
76; net revenue of $34.2 million) both experienced double-digit growth last
year and saw some of that business dry up in FY06-07.
