WPC65M elevated temperatura
Girth Weld Sleeve
The WPC65M elevated temperatura is a two-layer field-joint coating system for pileline
operating al ambient and elevated temperatura.
Product descri ption
WPC65M lield-joint coating.
Construction: Two-layer system:
Firstlayer: Visco-elastic adhesiva sealant.
Second !ayer: Radiation cross-linked, high density polyethylene with PCI
(Permanent Change lndicator).
WPC65M is a wraparound heat-shrinkable sleeve specially suitable lar
higher stress conditions caused both by elevated temperaturas and by soils with
severe contraction between wet-dry cycles. The WPC65M is compatible
with most commonly used steel pipe coatings and is used for girth weld
protection or to recoat (rehabilitate) long pipe sections and large radius bends.
WPC65M m ay be cut to the appropriate length to cover all pipe diameters.

3. Cut the corners of the underlying end of the
sleeve lo approximately 1/2" x 2" (15 mm x 50 mm).
4. Preheat joint area to approximately
160F (70C) mnimum. Preheating reduces
installation time and ensures proper bonding.
Note:
Two people working on opposite sides of the
pipe are recommended for installing sleeves
on pipe 16" (400 mm) in diameter and larger.
5. Remove the protective release plastic from
the coated sleeve. Center sleeve over the
weld so it is evenly overlapping adjacent pipe
coating. Wrap loosely around pipe.
Note:
1) Clean overlap area of the sleeve to
remove dirt and other foreign materials.
2) Edges of sleeve should extend 2" or more
onto adjacent pipe coating.
3) Overlapping ends of sleeve should align
evenly.
4) Position overlap to permit easy access for
install ing closure.
WPC 65M
WPCP IV closure application
1. Press the WPCP IV closure in position,
centeri ng over the exposed sheet end.
(For UNI-sleeve products, the closure
is preattached and already centered in
positi on.) The sheet should overlap the sheet
(excluding closure) by 2" (50mm) mnimum.
Sleeve recovery
1. Using the torch, begin at the center of the
sleeve and heat circumferentially around the
pipe, using a constant paintbrush motion.
While heating, the embossed or dimpled
pattern on the sheet surface should change
toa smooth surface.
4. Particular attention should be paid to the
weld and cut-back area.
2. Using a torch, adjust flame length to
approxi mately 20" (500mm) to produce a
yellow flame. Using the yellow portian of
the flame, heat the closure evenly until the
pattern of the fabric reinforcement is visible.
2. Continue heating toward one end of the
sleeve, followed by the other.
Note:
Sleeve may be recovered starting at one end
and proceeding toward the opposite end,
depending on conditions (i.e., wind).
5. Sleeve is fully recovered when all of the
following have occurred:
1) There are no cold spots or dimples on the
sleeve surface.
2) Weld bead profile can be seen through the
sleeve.
3) After sleeve is cool, mastic flow is evident
on both edges.
4) The sleeve has ful ly conformed to the pipe
and adjacent coating.
5) The pattern on the backi ng has
disappeared and the backing has a
smooth surface.
2/4
With gloved hand, pat down the closure and
smooth any wrinkles by gently working them
outward from the center of the closure.
3. When the sleeve has been shrunk onto
the joint area, run a small hand roller over the
sleeve to push out any trapped air.

1.0 SCOPE
This specificati on states the requirements for heat-shrinkable Thermofit Wraparound Pipe Sleeves,
Type WPC 65M to be used for corrosion prevention sealing of pipe j oints on various types of
piping systems, including oil , gas, water, pipe-type cable, and others. Type WPC 65M sleeves are
made with a special high performance mastic for corrosion prevention and sealing on elevated
temperature pipeli nes operating up to 65C (150F). WPC65M sleeves should not be used on lines
subj ect to high axial stresses due to soil or pipe movement or exposed to certain chemical
environments; consult Covalence CPG for specific recommendations for pipelines facing these
conditions.
2.0 DESCRIPTION
Type WPC 65M, wraparound pipe sleeves, are provided as a pre-coated sheet which is wrapped
around the pipe joint to be protected; a closure is then installed, forming a tube, and the sleeve
shrunk in place. WPC 65M/UNI has the closure preattached in the factory and is supplied as a
one-piece wraparround sleeve.
Type WPC 65M sleeves are composed of radiation cross linked, semi-rigid mastic coated
polyolefin backi ng, which upon brief exposure to temperatures in excess of 125C (257F), will
shrink from its expanded size (as supplied) to a predetermined recovered size. The closure
consists of a radiation cross linked, semi-rigid backi ng coated with a high shear strength adhesive.
The Thermofit Wraparound Pipe Sleeves are coated with a controlled thickness of a specially
formulated thixotropic mastic adhesive sealant that bonds the sleeves to bare and pre-coated pipe.
As the sleeve shrinks, the mastic flows and intimately coats the pipe surface providing pipe
protection against corrosion.
Wraparound sleeves may be cut to appropriate length to cover all pipe diameters.
