In the article Why Not Globalization (Johan NORBERG . The Spactator .

February 2004) the author claims that a multinational job means
prosperity, not exploitation for the Third World workers like TsiChi.According the author multinational compaines raise the life and
working quailties of workers by paying much more money then they did
before and providing better conditions for their workers and because of
these benefits of globalization anticapitalists should stop standing against
globalization. The author supports his ideas with some examples that he
choose from a certain area and certain facts. I agree with Johan
NORBERGs idea that globalization has some positive effects on especially
under-developed countries. However, I find his argument quite shallow as
he mainly focuses on only one company, NIKE , and not efficient for the
entire of the world.
The writer asserts that as a result of globalization multinational
companies raise the life and working qualities of workers. In my opinion
globalization has some positive effects on under-developed conuntries.
Firstly , workers of multinational make much more money then they did
before. These workers earn about two times more than the workers who
work for state-owned enterprises.Secondly, workers do not have to work
much harder. Acoording an interview with Tsi-Chi ,one of NIKEs workers in
Vietnam ,the most important thing, she says, is that she doesnt have to
work work on a farm any more, which involves working ten to 14 hours a
day in the burning sun or intense rain, in rice fields with water up to your
ankles and inscets in your face.(prg.8 ,line 4). Furthermore, multinational
companies provide better conditions for their workers like regular , free or
subsidizied meals, free medical clinics and education. These conditions
make people to feel like their company takes care of them which they
didnt feel at state-owned enterprises and makes the workers feels owe
the company. Lastly With their investments in poor countries,
multinationals bring better technology , new management skills and
production ideas, a larger market and the education of their workers. (prg.
10,line 2)
According to NORBERG in light of the facts that he mentioned in his
article anticapitalists should change their ideas and accept globalization. I
found his ideas quite shallow and not efficient for the entire world that he
mainly focuses on only one company and only one country. The essay
ignores the negative effects while it mentions the benefits of globalization
like globalization supports colonization, makes world more competitive and

lets companies take advantage of under-developed countries bad

conditions. For example ,the U.S.A. invaded Vietnam and sent the country
into trouble then multinational companies like NIKE went there and
provided some better conditions for Vietnamese people and welcomed as
a hero more than an invader .One of the other negative effects of
globalization that the author ignored is globalization increases the
inequlaties between people. For example, these multinational companies
pay more money to their workers than state-owned companies, but this
amount of money is less than the money they pay the workers in Europe
and America. Then where is the democracy that Capitalists always
support?
Although NORBERG is right about his ideas at some point that
globalization has some positive effects on under-developed countries like
providing better conditions for countries ,it is not acceptable for the whole
world that globalization causes lots of problems like supportive effect for
colonization, making the world a more competitive place and giving
companies a chance of taking advantage of under-developed countries
bad conditions. In mu opinion if NORBERG wants to change anticapitalists
idea he should find some more universal facts and supports that can really
shock anticapitalists.
