FQ: When does playing with fire NOT get you burned?
Do Now:
Think of your best friend for a moment. This is a person who stood by your side when you were
experiencing very difficult times. Their support was a major reason why you were able to overcome
your difficult period. You promised yourself you would never get involved in a relationship that may
make your life difficult.
Now, your friend is having a very difficult time of his/ her own. To come to their aid, you must break
your promise and put yourself at risk of losing what you worked so hard to attain.
What do you do?
I. The French Revolution (Refer to HGS03 for content)
A. Jacobins lead the Revolution, 1793
B. King Louis XVI beheaded, declare war on other monarchies (eg. G. Britain)

II. Treaty of San Lorenzo, (Spain) 1795
Fear of Joint US-British effort in North America, leads Spain to settle land claims with US.
A. Spain abandons all land claims to territory East of Mississippi River.
B. 31st Parallel become USs Southern border.
C. Florida is excluded from this treaty.
III. The British dont want to leave
A. British did not relinquish forts in NW territories despite agreeing to it in 1783 Treaty of
Paris (ending American Revolutionary War). Maintain forts in Northwest Territories
B. Incite Native American attacks on American settlers.
C. Two devastating defeats at the hands of Miami Confederacy.
IV. 1794: Battle of Fallen Timbers General Mad Anthony Wayne
A. A well-trained force of Americans defeat the confederate force and Little Turtle sues for
peace= Treaty of Greenville (all Ohio land claims relinquished for cash & annual payment. A
precedent is being set for future dealings with Native Americans)
B. An American fort is built nearby as a defiant statement to the British soldiers in a nearby
fort.
C. John Jay/ 1794 Treaty with Britain: British Forts are relinquished, British fur trading in NW
territories still allowed. Settlers are ANGRY!
V. G. Washington has had enough- 1796
A. What seemed logical when the Constitution was written, now is a BIG problem.
B. Election of 1796 and the Electoral College: 71 John Adams, 68 Thomas Jefferson
(President- Federalist/ Vice President-Democratic Rep.)
C. Term Limit Precedent (to be exceeded by the FDR administration in the 20th C. and later limited by
Constitutional amendment)
