A A W WO OR RD D F FR RO OM M T TH HE E H HA AL LL L P PR RE ES SI ID DE EN NT T

I came to this hall in my third year and with me came a fear of being
outcasted, but to my surprise the humble and benevolent seniors
accepted me as a part of Lala Lajpat Rai hall of residence and gave
me an opportunity to serve the hall as the general secretary sports
and games. My tenure as General Secretary Sports and Games of
Lala Lajpat Rai Hall of Residence, witnessed many ups and
downs, with teams finishing fourth in some events, but we never
lost the hope, we fought back and with continued perseverance
we achieved improved performance in other sports.
Coming to my tenure as the Hall President, the experience has been
a memorable and rewarding one. Last years outgoing batch left huge
voids of talent in the Hall. But thanks to the wonderful 2nd yr batch who were full of enthusiasm
and eagerness to learn, that we could fill those voids to a great extent.
Silver in Illumination and Bronze in Rangoli was a huge achievement which set the tempo for the
whole year and knit the whole hall into one piece as boarders from all genres were actively
contributing to make this mega event a grand success. A lot of hard work was put in to improve
our performances in all 3 GCs. The results started showing up with LLR seeing a commendable
uplift in Literary Cup. A Combined Silver in Inter hall English and Bengali Elocution and an
individual silver in inter hall hindi elocution, that we put up speaks a lot about the effort. The
medals achieved in the entertainment genre are a proof that LLR hall in expanding its reach . Gold
in Squash and Bronze in Table Tennis were deservedly claimed and I hope that the medals
achieved will be retained next year and even more medals will be achieved in various events
ultimately helping us win the
General championship. I hope people will work tirelessly to convert this dream into a reality. It
would indeed be a proud moment for all the Lajpatians. Shaun once quoted, Its been a fight to
change things. I hope the change is here to stay and urge the junior batches to maintain the tempo
and groom the in coming 2nd yr batch properly.Once again, an awesome batch is passing out this
year and we all will definitely miss them alot. Feeling a bit nostalgic, it seems life here wont be the
same without so many great friends.I wish great success for all of them in their future pursuits.
Finally as I sign off, I thank all my HCMs for working hard throughout the year and not letting me
down. I am full of gratitude for Rupak , Ashutosh Nayak, Nikunj, Salil, Abhishek Nahar, Nitin
Jhunjhunwala, Nikhil Desai(Daddu), Subhajyoti Ghosh(SJ), Ramprasad , Romeo, Deepant,Sheetal ,
Harish , Rahul Kumar Burman,Usman, Kinshuk, Koulick, Suvinay, Ved. My best wishes to the new
Hall Council. Keep up the tempo and achieve greater heights next year.
Yo LLR!!

A year to remember. It will be a frivolous attempt if I try to jot
down all my memories here in a single page. First thing that
strikes me as I started penning down (typing down would have
been more accurate) is the Tech GC. The year may not be as
fruitful as the previous years but the efforts were exceptional.
Credits to the juniors and second years for working hard to fulfil
the talent voids. I cant ask more than the rival captains to
praising our works on public forums? Illumination & Rangoli
were the best works of art KGP has ever envisaged.

The article would never be complete without mentioning Yaswanth for the strength and
determination he has displayed during the when hall was in a dire need of an act of bravery. A
helping hand whenever required. I am equally moved by the unity and the amount of courage
shown by our juniors when it came to question the authorities in a crisis situation. I have complete
faith in the juniors that they will work even harder and will fill the voids left by the seniors
graduating out.

When I realise that the year has come to an end and all our beloved seniors and the lovable batch
mates are graduating out, makes me feel depressed. On a lighter note dont ask me R U Ok? Will
miss the awesome time we spent together in this land of opportunities. Feeling nostalgic, I wish all
the Lajpatians graduating a great success in their future roads ahead. I thank all my HCMs for
working hard throughout the year and not letting us down. I wish all the best for the new Hall
Council.

Keep up the tempo and bring laurels to LLR.

Signing off

Yo LLR!!

Just have a little faith
- Mayank Mishra

Few weeks back I finished all the seasons of PRISON BREAK and I am really
impressed by Michael Scofields character, a brilliant mind with a caring heart. But I
personally didnt like or rather was not able to accept the ending of this television
series. Scofield is a fictional character and mere imagination of writer but
sometimes it reminds me of the life of many great people.

First of all I must clear my stand why I do not like the ending of Prison Break. Why it is
always the person who struggles throughout his life for good and bears all the pain doesnt
enjoys the light of happiness in his own life. Why life turns out more as tragedy than
happy ending. Most of the time the one who cares for others more than himself, life
doesnt turns out in the same way for him. Sometimes the person gets hurt by the nearest
one or life plays other foul game with him. Why the pursuit of happiness doesnt always
ends with happiness? Scofields character also comes across the same tragedy of life. A
person who devotes his life and career for truth, family, friend and country gets no
personal happiness and life turns out more as a tragedy.

Having said this I wonder why this happens with most of the good people. Scofield is a
fictional character but most of the good people in real world also face the same bitter part
of life. When I turn the pages of history to find the answer of this question I only find more
and more examples of it rather than finding an answer. May be history doesnt always
has the answer of all dilemma of life and sometimes it goes in realm of other unseen
part of the life. Meanwhile the question remains unanswered. The irony becomes more
prominent when we see the bad people enjoying all the pleasures of life.

I wonder what Scofield and other people have common and under all these problems what
keeps them going? A normal person considers his life as most important and his own
happiness comes first before every other thing. Others life either doesnt matters or if it
does, then not at least at the sake of his own happiness. But there is a fundamental
difference between a normal person living for himself and a person living for others. Life
may not be kind on good persons but they dont care for it either. For them happiness
has a different meaning. I havent experienced it but I must guess that must be more than
any other thing.

12
Well according to me faith keeps them going. During the biggest difficulties in
life, faith gives them the power to handle it. It is not the result which matters; it is the
journey which matters. Not every time one would get the thing he wants. But faith has
tremendous power. For example the persons who sacrificed their lives for freedom were
not there to see the India free. But they had faith in the cause. Similarly we can find so
many examples. We remember these people for the journey they traversed.
Faith works like a torch in your journey through the dark night. You might not know
where the road will end but at least with faith you can have the courage to move
forward. And as I said before result doesnt matters a lot. If you are satisfied with your
efforts no matter what the outcome is you will not feel bad at the end. Most of the time we
associate ourselves too much with the result, this is the part where we make
mistake. Sometimes you have no clue what went wrong, thats the mystery of life. Then we
start blaming life why it happens with me always. I know this feeling and I know many of
you must also have experienced it. This is universal problem. Life isnt that bitch giving
you everything you want although you might consider yourself to be worth it.

We all start our life crying and we die leaving others cry. Between these two cries
there happens a journey and this is the thing which makes you what you are. This
journey defines people. Life is too short for crying for the things you dont have or about
how life always ditches you. Have a little faith and move forward. So when the end comes
and you look back, you feel satisfied. History remembers people for their journey only.
Just have a little faith and make this journey worth having...... :)

The Promise of a Quality Education

- Kritarth Jha

Remember tenth grade, they told you to study, so that your life would be better. Similar
rhetoric was fed to us about a certain Joint Entrance Examination. So you, reader, resident
of this prestigious hall did study, and better than half a million others. And you got here.
Must be very proud no?

You get here to find that the professor struggles in putting his thoughts into clear,
understandable sentences. There was that 1 professor though, amazing in what he taught.
But since first year, thats the only professor of the kind youve come across. But you
ignored it, you studied as little as you had to, living off the sole assiduous nerd in class,
whom you later ostracized as the maggu. You busied yourself in interests that had been
denied to you thus far : Music, Theatre, Debate, Management. And when that wasnt
enough, there always was the bottle to reach for, or a debatable greener alternative.

Before you knew it, time was up. You had to get the hell out of here (ideally). And you were
confused once again. Because in these four years, while empirical learning might have
been monumental, and in most cases enough to see you through life, your academic
learning had been null. Because while the last minute fact-cramming in your head gets you
decent grades; it doesnt do much for learning.

Remember the first time you left your training wheels and cycled straight down, the first
time you were able to support your body weight in the pool, the first time you learnt how
to write. Okay too far back in time? What have you learnt yesterday? The Day Before? Last
Month?

The average student like me, would say no!

Imagine, like you ,there have been hordes of students , batch after batch, year after year,
with no pre-existing interest in their subject, and none generated after coming here either.
For India as a whole, thats bad news. It says that even the Premier institutes are inept at
making good students. I shudder to think of our State and regional counterparts.

There is one advantage though. We are smart. We are smart like nobodys business. And
thats why I believe, theres hope for us still. Thats why I believe, that WE, can still educate
ourselves better than our professors ever could. But think about it. Take one topic, it could

14
be smelting of iron ore, or genome sequencing or the aerodynamics of a car, and
teach it to your wing, or better yet to one friend, one dep mate, the guy beside your room.

While the details can still be worked out, action is necessary and complacency disastrous.
Its time to open those textbooks, and as we say colloquially here: FUNDA Samajhna zaroori
hai!!

And if the professor is incompetent, reasons for which being debatable, maybe the student
must rise to the occasion. To learn and then to apply, isnt that the human race condensed
to a line. And if the professor cant help us, maybe its up to us.

Maybe its time for a revolution. The most silent and most effective of them all.One that takes
place in libraries One in small rooms littered with students and books, finally realizing the
promise made to them, that life would be better when they knew more.

So reach for a book, and clear those concepts. Because Knowledge, in itself is a drug. And
thankfully, one thats still allowed on campus. And always will be.

It is never too late
- Abhishek Tripathi

Do you feel what I feel?
The dark shallowy ruzzle of liquidity - of life? Its calling me and the only way to reach it is
Jump. Jump off into the darker realms awaiting - take a leap of my faith. Its serenity.

Could you feel cold breeze turned wind in just a moment? No? Then, you should try this. It
gushes me off my face and awakens me - makes my eyes wide open to look down into
nothing. A moment before touching the candid coldie, it kissed me - all over my face, all at
once. Those little coldies filled me with spark, life And then, I wanted to live. Its never too
late to decide, or may be it is.

Candid(a)
- Kritarth Jha

Candida, is another anti-romantic play by Shaw. He hits out on Marriage, the idea of love (I
smell hints of Pygmalion essence), and questions, what is one to expect from relationships.
To give shape to his story Reverend James Morell, his wife Candida and the effeminate,
socially awkward, but hopeless romantic and my favourite of the lot Eugene Marchbanks
who vies for Candidas affections. These characters form the central plot of the story.
Candida is an object both Marchbanks and Morell desire. To Marchbanks, its insulting that
Candida, his Goddess has to indulge in household chores all day, while her husband goes
around giving sermons. A poet by profession, Morell would rather read out poems all day
to her.
In the background theres also Candidas father-in-law Burgess who represents the
Loathsome penny-pinching Capitalist, pitted against the socialist reformer in the
Reverend. He is someone our Kejriwal would love to take on. There is also the
typist/assistant Proserpine who works for the reverend and is also attracted to him, and
could potentially form the female equivalent of Marchbanks, but her class prevents this.
The deeper tension that prevails in the play is in the roles and responsibilities of a wife, of
a woman, Shaw in his play, shows us that Candida was a wife , mother and a sister to the
reverend , keeping the boring ordeals of daily life out so that he could give his sermons. In
a sentence, she props up his career. Marchbanks would never need her to do that. He might
have been effeminate, true, but he was self sufficient. He loved Candida, for her, the person.
Not the homemaker in her. By making Candida choose her husband over Marchbanks, to a
certain extent Shaw does give a blow to feminism, but in one sense, she had to be true to
her husband whom she had taken her vows with.
Additionally, had Candida been unmarried, her decision might have been different.
By the end of the play, Morell is not the Strong Reverend portrayed in the beginning , and
Marchbanks not the diffident , unsure Gawky teen. They exchange roles, with Morell
coming across as a disguised Man-child in Candidas Arms and , Marchbanks manly
marches out of the Morell households, into the night, not one of darkness, but one of
tranquility where the heart of a poet truly resides. Because, he was the lover that Candida

16
deserved, but not the one she needed. Because the reverends faith, deserved to
be rewarded, although to tell you the truth, I didnt want it to.
All in all, its a Play you will thoroughly enjoy. Im sure a lot of you seniors would be
preparing for your GMAT, so even if not for its beauty, you should read it because youll
reach for your dictionary twice per page. Plus , its a short play in three acts and 70 pages.
So have an hour or two to spare, well what are you waiting for!!

Budget ki chori
- Deepant Kandoi

Insiders had informed me that our Finance Minister, P Chidambaram, would be giving his
glimpse to the people standing in the scorching sun, before getting on with the
announcement of the budget inside the Lok Sabha. That was my only chance of revenge.
Unaware of the repercussions that were to follow my daring deed, as I would call it, I was
holding my ground firm. Honestly speaking intimidated I was. Here I would like to share
with you my state of mind which were creating a turmoil within me.
From now on would I be looked upon as respectfully as, Narkesh Hixlexia, Sumatra Gandhi,
Xiang jhan Jo, the ones who followed their fad and became famous overnight? Or would it
be the list of martyrs like Bhagat Singh, Chandrasekhar Azad, that Ramesh Sidhwani,
would find a place with a tag line -tried to bring order in the country and had to sacrifice
his life.
Just do your task without thinking of the results were my masterjis words on my
farewell day, but on that day who gave a f8888 what he spoke as I was busy cherishing
each and every moment that I spent with the most beautiful girl, my ex-girlfriend. Today,
these words came to my rescue and I could not stop thanking him for his teaching.
Here I was Standing in the street, in front of a giant screen, wherein the live telecast of
budget announcement was about to take place. It was already delayed by 2 hours but
thats the common trait in our country. You cant help it. Being a part of the crowd was not
something that I was used to. Today this muddled, cuddled group of people were
indifferent to me as I compared them with the regular queue, that I was used to see from
my chair of managerial position. A labour standing with his son rose above his shoulder,
so that he could see the FM. A girl dressed in the awesome Indian attire-Salwar Kurti. A
gentleman, well-dressed but gaping at the girl. An old man mumbling at the delay and
staggering, within the small and confined space. Strange, all of them seemed to be my own
family. Weird it is how a small incidence can change your life, its meaning and its purpose.
Oh!!! Wait!!! There is a third category wherein I could be placed. The great Valmiki
category, as the saying goes this brutal dacoit had a change-of-heart after some incident,

18
which transformed him into a great writer, the one aspired by whole world for
his masterpieces of stories.
As I saw our intelligent and prudent finance minister P Chidambaram coming out of the
temple of democracy, the parliament, sense of adrenalin rush went passed my enormous,
fat, over-weighted, body. He was dressed in impeccable white with his clean, pressed white
shirt tucked well inside his mundu, a dhoti sort of thing. Higher is a minister ranked in the
corruption list brighter, in colour, turns his attire? Huh!!! What a contradiction!!! I also saw
a brown coloured, square shaped, hand bag held by the FM as firmly and close to his body
as he could. This was the Pandora box I was looking for. No matter what happens this time
this annual opening of Pandoras Box would be avoided or at least would delay.
Well, its quite common that before taking up such downright actions, your thoughts are
not as eloquent as the pure form of water. It may seem that your plans of actions are
implausible. Even more, disconcerting it is, when you think of your actions repercussion.
But I was lucky enough to have garnered a pot full of inspirations. This time a still from
GANDHI, the famous Richard Attenboroughs movie, came to my rescue. I squandered
through its opening scene. Now, I could clearly understand the feelings and thought
process that Mr Nathuram Godse must have gone through before he decided to shoot Mr
Gandhi. As I advanced towards the Finance Minister my legs were getting hefty. Hands
inside my pockets were getting clogged. I tried to unjam them. As I made my way through
the crowd, I was beginning to feel the adrenalin rush. Hairs all over my body got
straightened. I was experiencing the deadliest Goosebumps of my life. Rushing came in a
scene from the movie, Rang De Basanti, one of my fav. The scene wherein all the five, to-be-
martyrs were walking towards the radio station, soon to be their death bed. One of the
best dialogues that I had come across in the Bollywood movies was played in the
background. That awesome dialogue gave me immense strength. By this time I had
reached as-near-as possible to our enshrined FM. Nathuram touched Gandhis feet for his
blessings, analogous to that I greeted him with my warm regards but of course I was in no
mood to touch his feet. Nathuram then pulled the gun from his pocket and shot Gandhi to
death. As my eyes caught the firm grip with which he was holding the small briefcase I
imagined handle to be analogous to the thin slender neck of innocent Indians and the grip
to be the noose. Indeed, it could be a noose for a lot of people if I dont do something
quickly. I took off my hands, resting uneasily inside my pockets. Raised my hands and then
in the flash of a light snatched the briefcase from our well-guarded FM.

19

This sudden commotion surprised everyone thereby starting the hoot from the
crowd. FM was himself very much aghast and instead of stopping me he became
still like a statue, maybe he feared that I may harm him as well. Guards and commandos
were rushing towards me from all over the places. Having no clue I went towards my
family, the crowd. To my surprise hastily, crowd made a path, an escape path, for me. At
first I was reluctant to follow this unexpected luck but as I overlooked the pouring
policeman from all the corners, I just threw myself inside the crowd. Maybe the mob
wanted to support me because most of them feared the tax burden or hike in petrol prices
to be announced but didnt had the courage enough to take necessary steps to avoid its
announcement. Or else they might have found it amusing at being witnessed such a
hilarious chain of events. Nevertheless, I was in no position to give a pause to my escape to
clear my doubts. Finally, muscling through the supporting crowds and dodging one or two
bullets fired at me I managed to escape.
Here I was, happy, excited and a bit confused at my deed. I was laying low in my rented
cottage since I knew that the officers would be sniffing all over the capital for any trace of
mine. That day the sunrise seemed more beautiful than my ex. The smell of the success,
achievement, marvellous it was. In came the newspaper through the small gap between
the door and the floor. The masthead was smaller looking smaller than the heading of the
article which was named Budget ki Chhori (Theft of Budget).

Journey of a coin

- Prabhat Kumar

High temperature, heavy load and finally I came out,
acquired a new shape with two beautifully carved faces
among a large group of my kin, I could see everyone glow
but soon I was separated from my family, tradition since long ago

Some days passed, still shining, travelling with new friends;
From person to person, everyone seems happy with me
But a real pleasure, I know I can't give to any body
as my owner's satisfaction does not lies up to me

Some weeks passed, still shining bit unclean, with new friends
why you are shaking me so hard, oh its beggars bowl,
journey continued and one day I was in in front of god
with lots of flowers and sweets, but temple was not my final abode

Some months passed, still shining bit discolored, new friends
my life still continuing a journey, endless I think.
Then comes a miser and his big red box with a big lock.
Lots of my friends in the dark box with a single chink.

Some years passed, discolored, worn out, with new friends some old ones,
still in that miser's box waiting for my life to change.
One day the miser comes, pulls out some of us,
throws us in our birthplace, declaring us junk and valueless.

High temperature, heavy load, in a long queue,
waiting for a new shape to come up with some value..

The Rise and Fall of Apple

Apples have been falling on the ground since before humans were mean to each other.
Since before the first law of thermodynamics, and even before Archimedes jumped out of
the bathtub. But never, I repeat, never was it a problem. Because nobody cared. Nobody
noticed. Anonymity was just fine for the apples. And life was good. Falling with a healthy
thump, and sticking in the marshy ground with pride, claiming their space and sitting on it
fat and plump.

But along came Newton.

This is a story of an Apple's fight against the Law of Gravitation, against this injustice to the
whole of Appledom, and the story of one apple's fight against the whole of scientific
community.

This is the story of the Apple who stood on a tree branch, and the crossroads of history,
and said "I have a dream". This is the story of: Adam, the Apple.
"I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest
demonstration for freedom in the history of anywhere.

Thirty two point five score years ago, a stupid man, in whose symbolic shadow we stand
today, discovered the Law of Gravitation. This momentous decree came as a great blow to the
self-respect of millions of proud Apples who had been living their lives with great satisfaction
and freedom of choice since the Sixth Day of Creation. It came as an evil evening to end the
joyous bright day of their freedom and their belief in it.

Now countless years later, the Apple is still not free. Countless years later, the life of
the Apple is still sadly determined by the manacles of the Earth's mass and the chains of the
Gravitational Constant. Countless years later, the Apple lives on a lonely island of
determinism in the midst of a vast ocean of unexplained phenomena. Countless years later,
the Apple is still languished in the corners of Science Books and finds himself as an anecdote
in what should be his own chapter. And so we've come here today to dramatize a shameful
condition.

In a sense we've come knocking at the educated world's conscience to prove a point. When
the man in that garden under an Apple tree wrote those demeaning words of the Law of
Gravitation, he was signing a humiliating profanity to which every dignified Apple was hence

23

to be subjected. This law was a belittling generalisation that all apples, yes, small
and large, educated and illiterate, would guaranteed fall to the ground same as
every other. It took away the Apple's "unalienable Rights" of "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of
Free Will." It is obvious today that the scientific community has taken for granted this really-
very-stupid law, insofar as the members of Appledom are concerned. Instead of honoring our
volition to life, the scientific world has given the Apples a stringent rule, a law of motion
through that sacred space between the revered tree branch and the holy ground.

But we refuse to believe that this horrifying generalisation is a law. We refuse to believe that
there aren't Apples who don't fall, but jump, of their own accord, in their own free path. Who
here hasn't heard of the great lunges of Dapple, the Apple. And who hasn't heard since birth
the stories of the daring, the adventurous Red Hot Balls, whose stunts in mid-air were an
astonishment to the most experienced of flying apples. And so, we've come to prove a point, a
proof that will give us henceforth the riches of freedom and the respect of complexity.

We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind Appledom of the fierce urgency of Now.
This is no time to engage in the luxury of predictability or to take the tranquilizing
acceleration of 9.8 meter per second square. Now is the time to make real the deserved
promise of honor. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate out-of-syllabus boxes in
the corner of a page in a physics book chapter to the esteemed befuddling titles of research
papers. Now is the time to lift our community from the quicksands of chronic injustice to the
solid rock of scientific dignity. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of us God's
favorite fruits. Now is the time to prove that Eve was right, in choosing us.

And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a
dream deeply rooted in my Branch of Birth.

I have a dream that one day us Apples will rise up and live out the true meaning of our creed:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all things have uncertainty."

I have a dream that one day on the colored pages of Resnick & Halliday, the rotund
curvaceous apples of a proud red color, and the quarks and mesons will be able to sit down
together in the star-marked questions and the Appendices in the end.

I have a dream that one day even the Newton biographies, those books sweltering with the
heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into a story of
the greatest false positive ever.

I have a dream that my four red neighbours will henceforth live in a world where they will
not be judged by the value of their mass but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today!

24

I have a dream that one day, down in CERN, with its vicious scientists, with its Chief having
his lips dripping with the words of "Higgs Boson" and "Heisenberg's Uncertainty" -- one day
right there in CERN little red apples and enthusiastic interns will be able to join hands and
bring out research papers about fast colliding apples.

I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day every Apple shall be unique, and every fall and landing shall be
eccentric, the Apple's individuality will be recognized, and the Apple that fell on Newton's
head will be vindicated; "and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all carbon shall see it
together."

This is our hope, and this is the faith that I fly down to the Ground with."

At the end what matters is how much have you learned, be it from
classroom or extra acads. Always try to explore your capabilities and
never give up. Regarding placements: although its good to be placed
ASAP but trust me day 1 is the most hyped thing in events of
placements. Just have patience and everything will fall in place.
