We have made it through
Columbus Day and Hallow-

giving; unless you happen to
be Canadian. In that event
you have probably had your
fill of turkey!
Even though the calendar
says it is November, the lo-
cal temp today was in the
low 70s. In fact, this very
day, while on my daily walk, I
spoke to a guy out for a
drive in his 1962 Chevrolet
Impala convertible. It was
Coronna Cream in color,
with the factory white vinyl
top. There was no rust
whatsoever after 52 years
and 51 thousand miles. A
nice ride!
Speaking of rides, we have
an update on SAVED 62. It is
even a possibility that she
may be back in the Yaros

I am in regular communication with the shop working on my car. I also want to point
out that these communications are initiated by the shop, not by me. That is a sign of a
good operation in my opinion.
The day after dropping my car off I received this email from the shop:
Dave,

Bumper is at chrome shop. On the body the hammer and dolly work
is complete and seam has been welded.

Chrome shop is going to straighten bumper and bring it back for
a trial fit before plating. BTW: Bumper has been repaired in
the past on same side.

Have a good weekend.

Considering they only had the car for 24 hrs. that is pretty good service!

Then on 21 Oct this communication came in:
Hi Dave,

Car is painted and ready to assemble. We had the chrome shop
bring the bumper back to us after it was straightened so that we
could fit it. That is done and the bumper is back at the
platers going through the copper plating process at this time.
The bumper had several previous repairs, several of which were a
bit iffy. They are going to do a fair amount of copper cladding
and then polishing to copper to build up some of the flawed ar-
eas. It will then be nickel and chrome plated. Hoping to get
the bumper back next week. Will keep you informed.

The platers gave me a price based on doing the repairs that sur-
passed the original estimate. I have talked to Tom Polster, the
adjuster, and it appears that there will be no problem getting a
supplemental payment (from Hagerty) for the increase.

Best regards,

A couple of points here: The damage appraiser Hagerty sent out estimated the
bumper repair at $489.00. I knew that figure would never fly. The actual cost turned
out to be $896.61.
Even at that cost, it is still quite a bargain. I say this as I have in-hand a quote from
an online verdor, billionsandtrillionsinc.com , which reads:
We have your 1962 Olds rechromed rear bumper in stock. It will
cost $1,850.00. Please give us a call at 918-291-nnnn to discuss
further. Thank you and have a great day!

I was not aware of prior bumper repairs, let alone iffy repairs. I am now. Having
dealt with Bennett Coachworks before, I know I can take their word as gospel when it
comes to my rides. Perhaps my bumper is a replacement for the one installed at the
factory? Makes me wonder.
Needless to say, I am anxious to get Saved 62 home. Anxious even though when she
returns Ill have to put her in hibernation for the upcoming winter. Rest assured, come
spring well be ready to hit the road and rack up a few miles of top down motoring!

Info You Can Use
Recently I came across a couple of items that I hope will be both of interest and value.
It is the kind of stuff one does not spend a lot of time thinking about, but when you need it,
you need it now. Hopefully you will be able to save it, and have it for your future reference
when that time comes.
The first item has to do with, of all things white wall tires. Creation of the whitewall tire is
credited to the Vogue Tire & Rubber Co. of Chicago. They made the first such tire in
1914. The white color results from adding zinc oxide to the chemical mix for traction. In
1934 Ford began offering whitewall tires as an $11.25 option on all its new cars. By the
80s they were a thing of the past. Can you imagine trying to keep whitewalls clean today
on a car with front disc brakes!
I hear you saying, what possible information about white wall tires could I need or want?
Have you ever considered how many different widths of white wall you have seen on tires?
Have you ever considered which width was used in what era? Well, that just might be in-
formation you can use; now and in the future. While I do not vouch for the accuracy of the
data, in the hopes it is of value to our readers, CCC herewith presents the white wall width
by era chart:

Traditional Whitewall Widths

ERA WIDTH
Pre-1954 3" whitewall or more
'54 thru '56 2 1/2" - 2 11/16"
'57 thru '61 2 1/4" - 2 1/2"
'62 thru '64 1" whitewall or less

Now, there is the matter of
car batteries. There are more
sizes and shapes than one
may hope to ever comprehend.
Why? It does make one won-
der, doesnt it?
Most automobile batteries
are indentified by group #.
Knowing the group # one may
determine the dimensions of
the battery. Knowing the bat-
tery case measurements one
may ascertain to which group it
belongs, or which group # will
work. Having the correct size
battery is critical when it comes
to things like the hood being
able to close, the battery being
able to be properly secured in
the tray and the cables being
able to reach the battery posts.
To that end, on the next page
CCC provides a BCI Battery
Group Chart showing common
batteries and group #s . For a comprehensive (lengthy) listing in .pdf format go here
