Title: Cellular Respiration-Heat Energy Release in

Respiration
Materials: 250 grams mongo seeds
2 Beaker
2 Thermo Flask
2 Small Vials
2 Cork Stopper
2 Thermometer
Objectives:
1. To demonstrate how heat is released during
respiration.
2. To understand how and why heat energy is
released in respiration.

(Boiling of seedlings) (Thermo Flasks set up)
Explanation:
The temperature of the boiled seedlings was
higher compared to the unboiled seedlings on the first
15minutes because of the heat absorbed by the seeds
when boiled. After a period, the temperature of the
boiled seeds lowered while the temperature of the
unboiled seeds continuously increases.
The purpose of sterilizing the boiled seedlings
with formalin is to kill or suppress other factors such as
bacteria and other microorganisms that will affect the
setup. Formalin is used to kill bacteria and
microorganisms which are present in decomposition of
materials.
Conclusion:
The seedlings respire aerobically because of the
presence of oxygen that is trapped inside the flasks. In
addition, germinating seedlings release heat while non-
germinating seedlings do not. Lastly, we have observed
that respiration could not take place in boiled seeds
therefore there is no heat produced.
