2. Introduction
The SKF digital thermometer TMDT 2 is supplied as a complete kit with
standard surface probe TMDT 2-30 and a battery, packed in a sturdy
carrying case.
SKF TMDT 2 3
3. Principle of operation
The SKF digital thermometer TMDT 2 is equipped with a sensor which
can measure the invisible phenomena of heat.
It does it by using a thermocouple which consists of two dissimilar
metallic conductors joined end to end. The junction produces when
heated a thermoelectric voltage, which strength is a direct function of
the measured temperature. This voltage is translated by the TMDT 2s
electronics into an exact temperature reading.
4. Functions
All functions described below are selected in a loop manner. Each time
you press the button you will move one step further until you reach the
end of the loop. Then you automatically start from the beginning again.
The status of the selections are shown on the display.
The instrument will automatically remember all selections even when the
instrument is switched off.
T1/T2/T1-T2 You can choose between displaying the
temperature from either of the two different
measurement channels T1 and T2, or
displaying the difference in temperature between
the two.
HOLD/HOLD MAX/
HOLD MIN
The HOLD function freezes the last reading,
while MAX and MIN display the maximum and
minimum temperature recorded.
C/F The temperature can be displayed in either C
or

F.
BEARING ALARM The thermometer has a special bearing alarm
function which goes on at 110 C/230 F.
This is the recommended temperature when
heating bearings for mounting with a shrink fit.
A bell will appear on the display when the alarm
function is activated. The alarm function is always
connected to T1, independant of selected
measuring channel.
ILLUMINATION The display can efficiently be lit up whenever
necessary.
PROBE DEFECT In case of a broken probe connection the display
will show .
BATT Low battery charge is directly indicated on the
display. If BATT is indicated the instrument will
still function, but the accuracy cannot be
guaranteed.

5. Connections
Power supply
The thermometer can be connected to an external power supply of
9V DC.
Analogue output
The instrument is provided with an analogue output for data logging or
temperature recorder.
Note:
Always remove the battery when it is empty, or if the thermometer
will not be used for an extended period of time.
Do not drop or subject the instrument to heavy impact, as permanent
damage may occur.
Always wait until the reading stabilizes prior to recording the
temperature.

7. Probe range
SKF has, apart from the standard surface probe, designed a vast range
of probes in order to satisfy the particular needs of any specific
application.
Thermocouple
The type used for the thermometer is the K-type, meaning that the
material used is an alloy of Nickel-Chromium joined to an alloy of
Nickel-Aluminium.
Response time
The SKF probes have a very short response time.
The response time is defined as the time it takes to run up to 63% of the
final measurement value under standardised conditions. In reality this
time also depends on the heat resistance of the object and the surface
conditions.
7.1 How to use probes
Angle
The surface probes should be pressed perpendicular
to the surface. Maximum allowance of this angle is # 5

.
Surface condition
a. The surface should be clean since oil, dust and other heat resistant
material prevent optimal thermal contact.
b. Surface should be flat and smooth. If not apply heat conduction
pasta. Rough surfaces might damage the thermocouple.
c. The area of the measuring surface should be larger than the area of
the probe head diameter.
Note:
Never attempt to cool down a surface probe by dipping it into water.
Such fast temperature drops will speed up the aging process of the
probe tip.
Do not move a probe over the surface since this might destroy the
probe.
