COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course designed for near beginners who want to enhance their basic knowledge of French.

Organization of courses

Semester course: one 13-week session, 16 hours of class/week (208 hours 15 credits)

A number of cultural activities are offered (i.e. a guided tour of Montpellier, excursions )
Classes take place on campus at the IEFE. Classrooms are equipped with facilities such as
audiovisual equipment and multimedia labs

PRE-REQUISITE

The student should have an A1 level.
Level A2 offers similar training objectives to level A1 so as to enhance basic knowledge of language.

OBJECTIVES

Listening
I can understand phrases and the highest frequency vocabulary related to
areas of most immediate personal relevance (e.g. very basic personal and
family informatin, shopping, local area, employment). I can catch the main
point in short, clear, simple messages and announcements.
COMPREHENSION
Reading
I can read very short, simple texts. I can find specific, predictable
information in simple everyday material such as advertisements,
prospectuses, menus and timetables and I can understand short simple
personal letters.
Spoken
Interaction
I can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and
direct exchange of information on familiar topics and activities. I can
handle very short social exchanges, even though I cant usually
understand enough to keep the conversation going myself.
SPEAKING

Production
I can use a series of phrases and sentences to describe in simple terms my
family and other people, living conditions, my educational background
and my present or most recent job.
WRITING
I can write short, simple notes and messages relating to matters in areas of immediate need. I can
write a very simple personal letter, for example thanking someone for something.

COURSE CONTENTS

1) Grammar

Determiners : possessive , demonstrative and indefinite articles
Pronouns : personal, relative, interrogative, possessive et demonstrative
Adjectives : place, comparatives and superlatives
Tenses: present, polite conditional, subjunctive, imperative and gerund
Connecting words in space and time
Indirect speech recounted in the present tense

2) Vocabulary

Enrichment of vocabulary acquired in level A1 (Discovery)
Expressing feelings, opinions, viewpoints, judgement.

3) Semantics

Strengthening of semantic elements acquired in level A1

4) Phonology

Recognition of phonemes in phrases
Relation between oral and written language
Prosody : rythm and intonation
Discrimination in phonemes
Elision, liaison words

5) Spelling

Usage of various punctuation marks
Spelling of vocabulary acquired

6) Sociocultural contents

Comprehension and comparison of some cultural and social aspects of everyday life,
French heritage and citizens.


TEACHING METHODS

The teaching methods apply the principles of the Common European Framework of Reference for
Languages (CEFRL)

Assessment

Continuous assessment
You will be given homework by your professors. They will explain assessment procedures. Attendance
is mandatory during exams in order to get a diploma. In case of problems, the professor must be
notified (a medical prescription will be asked if you are ill).

Final exams
Dates can be seen on the schedule you were given for pre-registration. If you are absent (in case
of illness, departure before exams), you will be given a transcript with grades concerning
continuous assessment, but you will not be entitled to a diploma.

The Diplme Universitaire dEtudes Franaises : Level A2 (DUEF A2) is delivered to students
who obtain a minimum average grade of 10/20 in the overall semester- long evaluation which
requires regular class attendance, as well as the final exams.

Each Competency is assessed both continuously and in the final exam (grade out of 20)
