The Magnolia Fresh Chicken Story

The SMFI Poultry Business, which uses the brand MAGNOLIA FRESH CHICKEN, had its
beginnings in 1953 when the first B-Meg feedmill in Balintawak began converting by-products
of beer production from the Polo brewery into animals feeds. In 1972, the companys integrated
poultry operations started with its first breeder farm in Cavite. The first chicken processing plant
which produced the trade mark Magnolia Fresh Chicken was set up in Muntinlupa in 1973.
These initial forays were followed in the 1970s and 80s by two more feedmills , 3 more breeder
farms, hatcheries and another processing plant. In 1991, San Miguel Feeds and Livestock
Division spun off from SMC and became San Miguel Foods, Inc., managing both the feeds and
livestock businesses.
San Miguels acquisition of Pure Foods in 2001 brought together two food industry leaders,
ushering in a new era of growth and market leadership for the integrated businesses. For poultry,
the integration brought together the strengths of two major brands-Magnolia Fresh Chicken and
Purefoods Supermanok. Today, the SMFI Poultry Business is the countrys leading producer and
marketer of branded poultry products. Other than the domestic market which it dominates, it is
also engaged in export of value-added chicken products to Japan.
Company profile
San Miguel Foods, Inc. (SMFI) is a subsidiary of San Miguel Pure Foods Company, Inc. (SMPFC), the food
division of San Miguel Corporation, one of the Philippines largest business conglomerates. It is engaged
in the agro-industrial sector, specifically in commercial feeds, poultry, pork and beef, with leading
market shares in each of these industry segments.
With a business model built on sustainable partnerships through outsourcing and franchising, the
company has built, through the years, an extensive network of third party-owned and operated facilities
that include feed mills, farms, hatcheries, processing plants, warehouses, and distribution facilities, and
a nationwide infrastructure of branded retail outlets selling pork, beef, and chicken.
To maximize synergies and boost each business leadership position, Monterey Foods Corporation,
which housed the companys meats business, was merged into SMFI in 2010 to form what is now called
the Poultry & Meats Business. With the merger, the Poultry and Meats Business has consolidated and
strengthened its core of technical resources, built a more cost-efficient organizational structure and
further expanded its production and retail operations for its food products. SMFIs main brands
MAGNOLIA FRESH CHICKEN and MONTEREY for pork and beef, remain the countrys leading products in
the fresh meats category.
