Conference on

O&M at Coal-based Power Plants

New Requirements and Challenges: Solutions and Strategies

O&M AT COAL-BASED POWER PLANTS

Mission
z

Coal-based power plants in the country have grown both in size and complexity over the years, which have changed their operations and maintenance (O&M)
requirements.

The sourcing of coal is a key challenge that power plant operators have to deal with. Another issue is the quality of coal received at thermal power stations, which
has been deteriorating sharply in recent times.

While coal blending was always a requirement because of variations in the quality of domestic coal, its importance has increased manifold due to the significant
increase in the use of imported coal, which requires modifications in boiler design as well as changes in O&M practices.

New regulations require the use of washed coal by thermal power plants (TPP) situated away from the pithead. This necessitates changes in O&M practices.
There is also the challenge of sourcing washed coal in many areas. So far, the enforcement of regulations is lax but this is expected to change in the future.

Similarly, environmental regulations are becoming more stringent. To respond to this, technologies for monitoring and controlling emissions are being utilised
by power plant operators. Fly-ash utilisation levels of thermal power stations have also been increasing.

Power plants are deploying condition-monitoring tools to enhance visibility of the health of critical assets. These have helped in reducing outages and hence
increased plant availability. Plants are also striving towards energy efficiency, driven by the perform, achieve, trade (PAT) mechanism. Automation and control
systems, which are the key enablers for this, are increasingly being adopted.

The mission of this conference is to provide a platform for discussing new requirements and challenges related to the O&M of coal-bbased power plants, and to
showcase potential solutions and strategies.
