1st January 2015 Mary Mother of God (Solemnity)

Mon 26 Saints Timothy and Titus, Bishops

The Octave of Christmas ends on the first day of the new year, which is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, venerated as the Mother
of God. The Gospel reminds us that she "kept all these things, pondering them in her heart" (Lk2:19). so she did in Bethlehem,
on Golgotha at the foot of the cross, and on the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended in the Upper Room. And so
she does today too. The Mother of God and of human beings keeps in her heart all of humanity's problems, great and difficult,
and meditates upon them. The Alma Redemptoris Mater walks with us and guides us with motherly tenderness towards the
future. Thus she helps humanity cross all the "thresholds" of the years, the centuries, the millenniums, by sustaining their hope in
the One who is the Lord of history.

Lent is the period of 40 days which comes before Easter in the Christian calendar. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, Lent is a
season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter. By observing the 40 days of Lent, Christians replicate
Jesus Christ's sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days. Lent is marked by fasting, both from food and festivities.

Not a single word of his is recorded in Sacred Scripture and yet St Joseph is one of the greatest and most popular saints, largely because of his humility and closeness to Our Lord. He died before the beginning of Jesus's
public ministry and since he probably died in the presence of Jesus and Mary, is venerated as patron of a good death. Blessed Pius IX named him patron of the universal church and Saint John XXIII added his name to the
Roman Canon

We know that Christ has truly risen from the dead. Yes indeed! This is the fundamental core of our profession of faith;
this is the cry of victory that unites us all today. And if Jesus is risen, and is therefore alive, who will ever be able to deprive us of the love of Him who conquered hatred and overcame death? The Easter proclamation spreads
throughout the world with the joyful song of the Alleluia. Let us sing it with our lips, and let us sing it above all with our hearts and lives, with the manner of life that is "unleavened", that is to say, simple, humble and fruitful in
good works. The Risen One goes before and He accompanies us along the paths of the world. He is our hope, He is the true peace of the world. (Pope

A typical Western image of the Pentecost painted by Duccio di Buoninsegna (1308)

24th May 2015 Pentecost (Solemnity)

The Holy Spirit is first and foremost a Creator Spirit, hence Pentecost is also a feast of creation. For us Christians, the
world is the fruit of an act of love by God who has made all things in which He rejoices because it is "good", it is "very
good", as the creation narrative tells us (cf. Gn 1:1-321). Consequently God is totally Other, unnameable and obscure.
God reveals Himself, he has a face. God is reason, God is will, God is love, God is beauty. Faith in the Creator Spirit
and faith in the Spirit whom the Risen Christ gave to the Apostles and gives to each one of us are therefore inseparably
united. The Gospel passage offers us a marvellous image to clarify the connection between Jesus, the Holy Spirit and
the Father: the Holy Spirit is potrayed as the breath of the Risen Jesus Christ. Here the Evangelist John takes up an
image of the creation narrative, where it says that God breathed into the nostrils of man the breath of life (cf. Gen 2:7).
The breath of God is life. Now, the Lord breathes into our soul the new breath of life, the Holy Spirit, His most intimate
essence, and in this way welcomes us into God's family. With Baptism and Confirmation this gift was given to us
specifically, and the sacraments of the Eucharist and Penance it is continuously repeated: the Lord breathes a breath of
life into our soul.
(Pope Benedict XVI)

food that sustained them on the long journey of the exodus through the desert of human existence. Like the manna for
the people of Israel, for every Christian generation the Eucharist is the indispensable nourishment that sustains them as they cross the desert of this world, parched by the ideological and economic systems that do not promote
life but rather humiliate it. It is a world where the logic of power and possessions prevails rather than that of service and love; a world where the culture of violence and death is frequently triumphant. Yet Jesus comes to meet
us and imbues us with certainty; He himself is the "Bread of Life". He repeated this to us in the words of the Gospel Acclamation: "I am the living bread from Heaven, if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever".

St Thomas (first century), called "the twin", is chiefly remembered for doubting the reality of the resurrection until he saw
the Lord for himself. Once he was satisfied, he made a heartfelt profession of faith: "MY Lord and my God". St Thomas,
who probably suffered martyrdom as a result of preaching the Gospel in India, comforts us when our faith is weak,
encourages us to persevere and demonstrates that "every doubt can lead to an outcome brighter than any uncertainty".

The Transfiguration of the Lord on Mount Tabor came to strengthen the faith of the disciples, for trying times ahead: the
Son of Man would be put to death and all that the human eye could see was weakness, humiliation, and suffering.
Beyond the shame of the cross, however, is the light and glory of Easter, and it is this that the Transfiguration reveals. It
shows the disciples and us, Christ's divinity He who is Light from Light anticipates the glory of Heaven.

Nothing is known for sure about the details of the Blessed' Virgin's birth. Even her parents , traditionally known a St
Joachim and St Anne, are not mentioned in Sacred Scripture. Today's feast originated in the East, probably during the
sixth century, and was later introduced to the West. A French legend tells of a man hearing angels singing on the night
of the 8th September and being told that the Virgin Mary had been born on that night. Her earthly birth is celebrated (like
that of St John the Baptist) because it announced to the world the coming of Jesus, the beginning of the New Covenant.

fertile from within, causing the most beautiful fruit of creative and redeeming work to develop the humble Virgin of

shall call him Emmanuel (which means, God with us)".
