Anattemptwasmadetoincreasemilksecretioninmothersby

only29(13.8%)gavenegativeresults181women(86.2%)reacted
positivelytothetreatment,117(55.7%)withgoodand64(30.5%)

concludethattheratplacentacontainsorallyactivesubstance(s)
whichmodifybloodlevelsofpituitaryandovarianhormones.

ABSTRACTTheaimofthisstudywastodeterminewhetheriron
deficiencyanemia(IDA)inmothersalterstheirmaternalcognitive

IDAandcognitionaswellasbehavioralaffectintheyoungmothers.
Thisprospective,randomized,controlled,interventiontrialwas
conductedinSouthAfricaamong3groupsofmothers:nonanemic
controlsandanemicmothersreceivingeitherplacebo(10gfolate
and25mgvitaminC)ordailyiron(125mgFeS04,10gfolate,25mg
vitaminC).Mothersoffulltermnormalbirthweightbabieswere
followedfrom10wkto9mopostpartum(n81).Maternalhematologic
andironstatus,socioeconomic,cognitive,andemotionalstatus,
motherinfantinteraction,andthedevelopmentoftheinfantswere
assessedat10wkand9mopostpartum.Behavioralandcognitive
variablesatbaselinedidnotdifferbetweenirondeficientanemic
mothersandnonanemicmothers.However,irontreatmentresultedina
25%improvement(P0.05)inpreviouslyirondeficientmothers
depressionandstressscalesaswellasintheRavensProgressive
Matricestest.Anemicmothersadministeredplacebodidnotimprove
inbehavioralmeasures.Multivariateanalysisshowedastrong
associationbetweenironstatusvariables(hemoglobin,mean
corpuscularvolume,andtransferrinsaturation)andcognitive
variables(DigitSymbol)aswellasbehavioralvariables(anxiety,
stress,depression).Thisstudydemonstratesthatthereisastrong
relationbetweenironstatusanddepression,stress,andcognitive
functioninginpoorAfricanmothersduringthepostpartumperiod.
Therearelikelyramificationsofthispoorer"functioning"on
motherchildinteractionsandinfantdevelopment,butthe
constraintsaroundthisrelationwillhavetobedefinedinlarger
studies.

complexprovidesanimportantbasisforunderstandingtheintrinsic
painsuppressionmechanismsthatareactivatedduringparturition
andmodifiedbyplacentophagia,andimportantinformationforthe
possibleuseofPOEFasanadjuncttoopioidsinpainmanagement.
