Guide Questions

How does varying the water flow rate affect the temperature of the water outlet?
The value of the heat transfer coefficient varies with the flow rate of water. Higher flow
rate have a tendency to have a turbulent flow, allowing a more efficient heat transfer
between the steam and water.

Generally, when steam and water are used in a double-pipe heat exchanger, why is
that the temperature change of water is greater than the temperature change of the
steam?
The temperature change in water is greater than the steam due to its relatively lower heat
capacity

What difference(s) would come about if Ui was used instead of Uo?

No, difference would come about

Guide Questions

Compare the rate of heat transfer in each of the holes (left, center and right) of the
big and small steel balls. Explain
Based on the results, the right hole has the greatest heat transfer rate and next is the left.
While the center hole has the least heat transfer rate because the final temperature
resulted to a higher temperature than the other two.

What is the effect of the different sizes (big and small) of the steel ball in
determining the thermal diffusivity?
Based from the results obtained, there is no effect of varying sizes in finding for the
thermal diffusivity of a certain material because in the case of the steel ball, thermal
diffusivities were the same even if the size is big or small.

Why is the temperature of the water at 95C? Why not 100C?

The temperature of the water bath was set at 95C and not 100C because water will boil
at 100C

Guide Questions
What is the significance of setting the damper in the drier at 45?

The significance of setting the damper to 45 degree angle is for air to be maintained
inside the air tray drier.

Describe the behavior and rate of water removal in the constant rate drying
period?
The constant rate period occurs during the drying of the surface moisture. In this period,
the grain temperature does not increase appreciably due to the effect of evaporative
cooling. Removal of moisture from the grain is fastest during this period. If there is no
change in the temperature of the material and therefore all heat energy transferred to it
must result in evaporation of water. The rate of removal of the water is also the rate of
mass transfer, from the solid to the ambient air.

What control the rate of removal of water in the drying experiment?

The damper setting, the bigger opening would less maintain the air inside the drier.
The higher the temperature, the faster the drying rate.
The air blower, the lesser air blown inside the drier the slower the drying rate would be.
