Aim This module is an introduction to the world of textiles giving an overview of
fibres through to finished fabric.
Summary students will develop an appreciation, awareness and understanding of
the use and properties of textile fibres, yarns and fabrics.
E17MA Fashion & garment make for textile designers
Aim Introduction of basic pattern cutting and garment assembly techniques and
principles to stimulate a creative response.
Summary- Recognise and appreciate appropriate assembly techniques for sewing
woven and knitted fabrics and their application to basic fashion silhouettes through
practical assignments.
E17TK Textile Design Knit
Aim This module provides a creative practical introduction to the process of design
development for knitted textiles.
Summary Apply visual sensitivity towards the developing and grouping of knitted
fabric designs using appropriate techniques and equipment.
E17TP Textile Design Print
Aim This module provides a creative practical introduction to the process of design
development for printed textiles.
Summary Apply visual sensitivity towards the developing and grouping of printed
textile designs using a variety of drawing/mark making and screen printing
techniques.
E17PA Product Development 1
Aim To provide students with an understanding of pattern creation and adaptation
in relation to garment and fabric types
Summary- Students will develop patterns in relation to size charts, consider patterns
in relation to fabrics, movement and comfort. The selection and application of
appropriate components and trims, basic sewing and construction techniques and
will develop two final products,
E17FD Fashion Design & Illustration 1A
Aim To develop an understanding of the holistic nature of the design process
And introduce the principles of designing for Fashion. To build on the skills of
Fashion communication
Summary . Introduce the student to the basic principles of research and design
development for fashion through garment drawing and investigate fundamental
design development through proportion and balance, silhouette and attention to
detail. Develop design ideas on the figure or as flats (working drawings).

Aim Introduction to printed and knitted textile design for fashion, To provide an
opportunity for an exploration of the creative potential of media textile materials and
process and introduction to the fundamental process and procedures for the
manufacture of printed and knitted textiles.

Aims
To provide the student with knowledge and skills in techniques of
fashion design for a variety of applications..

E17TW Textile Design Weave
Aim This module provides a creative practical introduction to the process of design
development for woven textiles
Summary Apply visual sensitivity towards the developing and grouping of woven
textile designs using appropriate techniques and equipment.
E17AD History of Art and Design
Aim Introduce students to artistic output within social and historic context. Develop
skills for academic research.
Summary Discussion of a wide range of art and design outputs from the
beginnings of art through a series of seminars and tutorials with an emphasis on
desk top research and writing.
E11TC Drawing for Textiles
Aim This module facilitates the understanding of observation and colour
development towards the production of design ideas.
Summary experimental and mixed media drawing, collage, gouache painting and
mark making lead projects.

Aim To develop and add to pattern cutting and garment assembly techniques.
To provide the student with a fuller understanding of the practical application of
pattern cutting and garment assembly whilst developing problem solving skills
through the exploration and study of more complex garment types.

Aims

Aims
To provide a general introduction for students to marketing theory and
practice.
To enable students to acquire and develop basic understanding, knowledge
and skills related to marketing.
To recognise and appreciate issues relating more specifically to: market
segmentation, targeting and positioning; product & brand management;
consumer buying behaviour; marketing communications; marketing of
services; online marketing; distribution, pricing
To assist the development of skills (particularly diagnostic, written, problem
solving, communication, presentation and IT skills) through the use of tutorial
assignments and presentations, written report assignments and exams.
To enhance business skills via a basic understanding of the practical
application of theoretical knowledge through industrial guest lectures where

Aim To produce a range of designs which take into account commercially
recognised repeat sizes, scale considerations and colour selection suitable for the
market.

Aim The aim of the module is to develop a creative and experimental approach to
the development of fashion products to create contemporary fashion garments

development techniques, Transfer of creative ideas in flat patterns, Creative

Aim To analyse visual imagery to promote a fashion concept and have an
understanding of graphic design within the wider social and cultural context
Summary To develop powerful image manipulation skills combined with clear and
effective composition skills that will enhance the aesthetics of the work. To have an
understanding of which software is used for what type of work
E17FU Fashion Design for Function
Aim To develop an understanding of garment construction and detailing in
designing for function within specified parameters of appropriate fabrics and their
fitness for purpose
Summary Investigation of fabric types and their performance for work wear and
high performance clothing. Identifying the design and function of garments across
various market levels. Exploring garment construction, designing a range of ideas
across design worksheets. two garment pieces to make and present.

Aim To produce a range of fashion textiles for a chosen designer/retailer

Aim- To develop an understanding of the design process for Fashion knitwear.

Aim To produce an original printed garment and fabric repeat relevant to the
fashion market
Summary Resolve the design process from fashion croquis and engineered print
artwork through to a final viable fashion statement
E18YS Yarn making & spinning
Aim To introduce students to the design and production processes for yarns across
the technologies available in the School of Textiles and Design
Summary Design and development of a yarn collection appropriate to the visual
research undertaken within the module
E18FP Floral Print
Aim Develop students awareness within the contemporary textiles market to
produce an original floral print statement.
Summary Broaden students observation skills around a specific subject area and
use appropriate media to record these.

Aim To provide the student with a theoretical and practical knowledge and
understanding of pattern development in relation to tailored garments.
Summary The principles of tailored pattern development., jacket or coat styling
incorporation of movement and comfort using engineered techniques

E18FG Fashion Graphics & Illustration
Aim To develop a personal fashion illustration style by broadening an awareness of
contemporary designers and relevant artists and connect these discoveries with own
visual ideas.
Summary The development of a series of observation drawings around a given
theme, through a series of projects which explore and challenge the use of
typography and layout to promote a contemporary graphic aesthetic

Aim- To develop an understanding of the design process for Fashion knitwear.

Aim To select and interpret pattern on paper into cloth as a garment focusing
particularly on placement, scale and proportion of colour , exploring the construction
process of building up a screen printed design using a pre determined colour palette
and fabric substrate

Aim To interpret design drawings into a capsule collection of 2 outfits through an
independent investigation of advanced pattern cutting and garment assembly
techniques and processes to realise design ideas.
Summary Advanced pattern cutting and garment assembly methods to meet
individual needs of students. Flat pattern cutting and modelling on the stand to
achieve required garment shapes and proportions. Identifying and sourcing
appropriate fabrics to fulfil design requirements. Investigation of seaming details and
design features through sampling. Toiling of garment pieces, checking fit. Production
of final outfits.
