seen
Give oral drug with food to decrease GI upset and enhance absorption.
Have vit. K available in case hypoprothrombine-mia occurs

Name of Drug:
Generic: Albuterol

Brand: Salbutamol + Guiafencin Syrup

Dosage: 5mL TID
Mechanism of Action:
It relieves nasal congestion and reversible bronchospasm by relaxing the smooth muscles of the bronchioles.
The relief from nasal congestion and bronchospasm is made possible by the following mechanism that takes place
when Salbutamol is administered.
Indications:
Salbutamol is a selective 2 adrenoceptor agonist. At therapeutic doses it acts on the 2 adrenoceptors of
bronchial muscle, with little or no action on the 1 adrenoceptors of the heart. The combination of salbutamol
with guaifenesin is designed to relieve respiratory obstruction and improve pulmonary ventilation.
Contraindications:
Salbutamol + Guaifenesin (Ventolin Expectorant) syrup is contraindicated in patients with a history of
hypersensitivity to any of its components.
Side Effects:
Fast, irregular, pounding, or racing heartbeat or pulse
shakiness in the legs, arms, hands, or feet
trembling or shaking of the hands or feet
Adverse Reactions:
Salbutamol + Guaifenesin (Ventolin Expectorant) syrup may cause a fine tremor of skeletal muscle, usually
the hands are most obviously affected. This effect is dose related and is common to all -adrenergic stimulants.
A few patients experience a feeling of tension; this is also due to the effects on skeletal muscle and not to
direct CNS stimulation.
Occasionally headaches have been reported.
Peripheral vasodilatation and a compensatory small increase in heart rate may occur in some patients.
Hypersensitivity reactions including angioedema, urticaria, bronchospasm, hypotension and collapse have
been reported very rarely.
There have been very rare reports of muscle cramps.
Potentially serious hypokalaemia may result from 2 agonist therapy.
As with other 2 agonists hyperactivity has been reported rarely in children.
Side effects associated with guaifenesin are rare.
Tachycardia may occur in some patients.
Cardiac arrhythmias (including atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia and extrasystoles) may occur in
susceptible patients
Nursing Responsibilities:
Assess lung sounds, PR and BP before drug administration and during peak of medication.
Observe fore paradoxical spasm and withhold medication and notify physician if condition occurs.
Administer PO medications with meals to minimize gastric irritation.
Extended-release tablet should be swallowed-whole. It should not be crushed or chewed.
If administering medication through inhalation, allow at least 1 minute between inhalation of aerosol
medication.
Advise the patient to rinse mouth with water after each inhalation to minimize dry mouth.
Inform the patient that Albuterol may cause an unusual or bad taste.+
Patients should be warned that if either the usual relief is diminished or the usual duration of action reduced,
they should not increase the dose or its frequency of administration, but should seek medical advice.
Salbutamol should be administered cautiously to patients with thyrotoxicosis

Rationale:
To relieve nasal congestion

Name of Drug:
Generic: Paracetamol
Brand:
Mechanism of Action:
Symptomatic relief of pain and fever.
Dosage:
250 mg 4 mL q4 PRN for temp >37.6
250 mg 4mL q4 RTC x 24 hrs
Indications:
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to drug.
Use cautiously in patients with long term alcohol use because therapeutic doses cause hepatotoxicity in these
patients.
Hematologic: hemolytic anemia, neutropenia, leucopenia, pancytopenia.
Hepatic: Jaundice
Metabolic: Hypoglycemia
Skin: rash, urticaria.
Side Effects:
Relief of mild-to-moderate pain; treatment of fever.
Adverse Reactions:
Stimulation, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, hepatotoxicity, hepatic seizure(overdose, Renal
failure(high, prolonged doses), leucopenia, neutropenia, hemolytic anemia (long term use) thrombocytopenia,
pancytopenia, rash, urticaria, hypersensitivity, cyanosis, anemia, jaundice, CNS, stimulation, delirium followed by
vascular collaps, convulsions, coma, death.
Nursing Responsibilities:
Use liquid form for children and patients who have difficulty swallowing.
In children, dont exceed five doses in 24 hours.
Advise patient that drug is only for short term use and to consult the physician if giving to children for
longer than 5 days or adults for longer than 10 days.
Advise patient or caregiver that many over the counter products contain acetaminophen; be aware of this
when calculating total daily dose.
Warn patient that high doses or unsupervised long term use can cause liver damage.
Rationale:
To relieve pain and treatment of fever
