I-SITUATION:

Pupils of Minsulao Elementary School were introduced to a reading activity every day.
In order for this pupil to participate they were graded individually. As a teacher I gave
all my effort for them to learn on how to read. Still not all pupils were able to read
properly.

II-PROBLEM
Poor reading abilities of the pupils
Title: Factors affecting the reading abilities of pupils
Factors causing the poor reading abilities of the pupils
III- ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION
1. Evaluate pupils reading habits to find out where they need improvement. Do
they say" the words youre reading? Do strange words slow their speed and
comprehension? Do they read every word? Do they re-read sentences? Do they
vary your speed to suit the material?
2. Provide the conducive learning environment. Advise pupils to choose a place
where youll have few interruptions, have good lighting, can sit in a good chair,
and wont be distracted by radio, TV or other noises. Hold the book about fifteen
inches away (about the distance from your elbow to your wrist).
3. Increase pupils vocabulary by providing meaning to the words they do not
understand, maintaining a list of new words, and knowing the origin of words.
4. Match your speed to the material you are reading. Know what and why youre
reading. Preview the material, especially when studying. Study reading requires
closer, slower reading. For leisure reading you can go faster. Be sure you get the
information in graphic aids and illustrations.
5. To improve your reading speed, practice for about 15 to 30 minutes each day,
checking your rate in words-per-minute. Check your comprehension by
summarizing what you read. Ideally, you want to read faster while maintaining
your understanding. Therefore, use the same type of materials each time you
practice to provide the consistency needed for meaningful practice.

6. Begin your reading by looking at the pictures, or listening to the music to get a feel
for what you are going to be reading about.

IV- PLAN OF ACTION

A.
B.

C.
D.

Objectives: Enable pupils of Minsolao Elementary School to improve

their reading abilities.
Time Frame: Within 1 week of following the steps in improving poor
reading abilities they should be able to read properly and can enhance
reading skills.
Target Subject: English Reading for everyday life.
Activities to be undertaken:

Improve reading fluency in 5 minutes a day

Improve spelling and learn the 8 ways we put letters together to make words

Improve reading comprehension by playing a reading comprehension game

Improve writing skills using specially designed graphic organizers

E. Research Design:
The essentials of action research design follow a characteristic cycle whereby
initially an exploratory stance is adopted, where an understanding of a problem
is developed and plans are made for some form of interventionary strategy.
Then the intervention is carried out (the "action" in Action Research) during
which time, pertinent observations are collected in various forms. The new
interventional strategies are carried out, and this cyclic process repeats,
continuing until a sufficient understanding of (or a valid implementation
solution for) the problem is achieved. The protocol is iterative or cyclical in
nature and is intended to foster deeper understanding of a given situation,
starting with conceptualizing and particularizing the problem and moving
through several interventions and evaluations.
V: Presentation of Results:
After implementing the steps in improving pupils reading skills, pupils of
Minsulao Elemetary School can now be read properly and the also grades
where all high.
