Roundup

from the Chapter Chair in Salt Lake City

Greetings bookworkers!

On May 26 several bookbinders gathered to visit Steve Pratts workshop in Cove Fort. It
was a long drive but well worth it. He is one of the last repairmen for 100 year old presses and still
manufactures new cast iron presses. He gave us a tour of his shop and showed slides of his work.
After lunch we were able to tour Cove Fort, an historic pioneer fort.

Our next gathering will be at the Ink Spot Run shop in the Salt Lake Avenues and will be
announced in the next newsletter.

I am still working on my book for the Fantasy and Nonsense exhibit and cant wait to see your
entries. Dont forget the deadline for entries is July 1! Counterform is another exhibit that will be on
display at the Marriott Library during Standards; the show is open to all Utah book artists.

Monique Lallier will be coming to the bookarts program in July., teaching New Oriental
Bookbinding. This workshop will be co-hosted by the Marriott Library Bookarts program (see inside
for details).

Standards registration forms are out in the national newsletter register soon and dont
miss out! I am looking forward to having Standards in Salt Lake and hope that we will have some
volunteers to help out.

from the Chapter Chair in Denver

Dear Rocky Mountain Chapter Members,

Sammy Lee has been working to bring in a great line-up of workshops and I hope you will
consider attending one or more.

An upcoming workshop that I am very much looking forward to is fore-edge painting,
otherwise known as fepping, with Jeanne Bennett. This workshop will be held at the Denver
Botanical Gardens the weekend of August 18 - 19, and is co-sponsored by our chapter and the
Botanical Gardens. A long time bookbinding friend of mine, Jeanne is the author of a new book,
Hidden Treasures: The History and Technique of Fore-edge Painting. You can check out her website: www.
fephiddentreasures.com. Jeanne has developed techniques to make fepping something we can do
on most any book from the very valuable one to your favorite paperback. You dont even have to
be an artist. We are able to use clip art or rubber stamps to paint over. It is a wonderful art form.

November 3 & 4, book artist Bonnie Stahlecker will teach a master class, Embossed Leather
Journals. Prior to the workshop, on the evening of November 2, Bonnie will give a lecture, An
Evolution of Thought: How Books became Sculpture. Mark your calendar!

The Press at Colorado College is offering the class Introduction to Letterpress Printing, in
a two-day workshop, June 30-July 1. You can find information at www.coloradocollege.edu/offices/
summerprograms/enrich-your-life-community-courses/introduction-to-letterpress-printing.In
early fall, Fred Hagstrom, Professor of Art at Carleton College, and book artist, will be teaching
students at Colorado College. Watch for information on his talk. The Press continues to grow its
letterpress and book arts program by offering a Thematic Minor in The Book, with book arts
classes as well as Art, English, English, History and Religion classes that incorporate The Press, and
by offering community classes. Check out The Press Blog: pressatcc.blogspot.com!

Have a wonderful summer!
