Greetings from Salt Lake City. It looks like we are finally emerging from a long hard winter! Our
last gathering was cancelled due to weather (it snowed 6 inches that night!). Our new meeting is
scheduled for:
Book Gathering and lecture at the Red Queen
6:00 PM, Friday, March 22, 2013
171 East Broadway, Salt Lake City, UT
Please attend our book gathering it will be a potluck event (snacks and desserts) with a walkthrough and lecture by the owner of a new bookstore in Salt Lake City that specializes in bookarts!
Melissa Sanders has been a bookseller for more than 10 years and worked for her father at Ken
Sanders Rare Books, as well as other stores. She has recently opened her own store and we have
been invited to have our book gathering there! Her lecture is titled Selling Bookarts. See you
there.

Dear Rocky Mountain Chapter Members,

Happy day-light savings time! Not everyone is a fan of the time change, but I love it because I
can return home after work, go for a hike and still have daylight left to work at the bench. I hope
to do a lot of that as spring turns to summer.
Ill be traveling to the Czech Republic in May to work on bindings with bookbinder Jarmila
Sobota. We will work mostly on miniature bindingsshe sells her limited editions online and at
the Miniature Book Society Conclave, this year held in Vancouver. Upon my return, Ill write
an article for our RMC newsletter about my experience there regarding our work and the book
arts in the Czech Republic.
Colorado College is offering Book & Book Structure: A Poetics of the Bookthis spring, taught
by poet, book artist/letterpress printer and proprietor of Cuneiform Press (www.cuneiformpress.com),
Kyle Schlesinger. He will offer a public lecture on Wednesday, April 3, at 3:30 PM in the WES
room in the basement of the Worner Student Center on the CC campus. Please come!
The exhibit Any thing that Is strang, works of Press Printer Aaron Cohick, will be on
display at Colorado Colleges Colburn Gallery March 25 - April 16, with an opening reception
on Friday, March 29, 4:00-6:00 PM. It will include the newest limited edition book, Orpheus the
stutterer: a poetics of silence written by poet and letterpress printer Alan Loney, letterpress printed
by Aaron and bound by CC students. Structured as a reading room and exhibition, this handson exhibition features books, broadsides, posters and other ephemera from two Colorado Springs
publishers of handmade books: the NewLights Press and The Press at Colorado College. The work
of both presses is focused on a critical engagement with the material word.
Many thanks to Sammy Lee for arranging such great workshops in the Denver area. Most
recently she arranged the workshop Let Me Count The Ways, taught by book artist and Scripps
College professor, Kitty Maryatt, on a plethora of sewing structures for book signatures. Keep a
lookout for these unique opportunities when we get world-class instructors coming to our area to
teach top-notch classes and workshops. Our newsletter lists great local classes as well.
Welcome new Rocky Mountain Chapter members!
Marvi Hjelmroos-Koski, Linney Wix, William Whitley, Kohleen Reeder, Katie Smith,
Jennifer Buchi, Daniel and Karleigh Heywood, Mahala Kephart, Kylie Ladd,

We are so glad to have you join us, and I welcome you to contact me if you have questions or are
interested in becoming more involved. I want to especially welcome those members who are in the
Denver area and hope you will take part in the workshops, exhibits and meetings in the area.
