Space

Odyssey

Review

2001 space odyssey is another top film made by one of the great film directors Stanley Kubrick who brought us
films like the shining and clockwork orange and many more Kubrick can be a bit of a marmite director as his
taste in subject and his need to outsmart his audience can turn some people away from his film but with all that
said space odyssey is a marvel it
is film which can be considered hard to watch and to tell the truth is a bit but makes up for this in it very
pleasing set designs and amazing special effects as this is also a pre cg
film which uses practical effects to the point of pure magic.

The film is broken down into five

segments wich all contain the book end which is the monolith and is filmed in such a way to make the audience
fell as if they were observing events rather then a whole story as

Tom Milne notes

There is remarkably little plot to 2001. The film, in fact, might
be best described as a factual philosophi- cal speculation, rather
than as the drama it sets out as but never develops into. (Tom
Milne)(2010)
The philosophical subjects of Kubricks films can be argued over
for days and each view may take something different each time but
the film mainly handles three stories first the dawn of man which
shows man in its earliest imagining

these characters live a peace full existence till they come in contact with the monolith which seems
to give all that touches it a boost of intelligence and are embodied with the knowledge which in the
end makes man into its later form but also has a slight biblical slight its as if the object is a
representation of the apple of knowledge and with this knowledge we leave paradise by performing the
original sin after this act and boost in intelligence we are introduced to modern man who also finds
the same object which propels us into deep space exploration.
There is a subplot in the old science-fiction nightmare of man at terminal odds with his
computer. (RENATA ADLER)

The A.I known as Hail which has been programmed to be self-aware actually is the only case of
technology versus man which is justifiable there is two points to this first is pride Hails pride
is what leads him to try and kill all his crew this is down to him not being able to accept that he
could be wrong which is both his fought and mans if hail was truly brilliant and able to comprehend
so much
the ability to be wrong or to fail should have been a integral part of his pro- gramming but no man
has to make hail in his ideal image which is a intelligence which is infallible and the second
point is that hail is following every sentient impulse of self-preservation yes as a human we view
his actions as another ma- chine out of controlee but in theory all he is doing is trying to

preserve him- self like any other self-aware intelligence would do.
All of this part of the film is both a great use of set design and practical ef- fects and use of
camera angles and force perspective this view is commonly held all though people may not get the
film there no denying
it's an exercise in spectacle and even in today's world of CGI, it's safe to say that the effects
are still very impressive. (Almar Haflidason )
the main part that makes and breaks this film is the last act which can be hard to watch at the
best of times this whole part could ever lose you confuse you or just leave you asking so many
questions like what have I just watched or what is the meaning of life maybe this is what Kubrick
was going for his own visual monolith which give the views new found intelligence and need for
answers and knowledge

on set for last scence
