Homework #1

Solution

Question 1. (10pts) Please see your homework.

Question 2 (40pts) (Moment-Distribution Method)

E = 29000 ksi for both beams and columns.

Note: Counterclockwise is considered positive for all moments acting on the frame;
likewise clockwise is negative.
Calculate the distribution factors for all of the joints (C,D and E):
Distribution Factors @ Joint C:
DFCA = (1000/30) / ( 1000/30 + 1400/30)
= 0.417
DFCD = (1400/30) / ( 1000/30 + 1400/30)
= 0.583

Distribution Factors DF @ Joint D:

DFDB = (1000/30)/{1000/30 + 1400/30 + (3/4)*(1400/30) }
= 0.29
DFDC = (1600/30)/{1000/30 + 1400/30 + (3/4)*(1400/30) }
= 0.41
DFDE = {(3/4)*(1400/30)} / {1000/30 + 1400/30 + (3/4)*(1400/30) }
= 0.30

Homework #1

Solution

Distribution Factors @ Joint E:

Calculate all fixed end moments ,FEM in K-ft:

FEMAC = 187.5 FEMCA = -187.5
FEMBD = FEMDB = 0
FEMCD = FEMDC = 300
FEMDE = 450 if FEM ED = 0, else FEMDE = FEM ED = 300
( carryover of moments to fixed end D from E and zeroing of moments at E, results
in same answers in both cases)
Carry over of moments occurs from any type of joint to only a fixed joint.

Homework #1

Solution

Question (30pts) 3

.
Using Moment Distribution:
Fixed End Moments (FEM) are same as above.
K = 3EI/L
KAB = 3EI/26
KBC = 3EI/40
DF = K/K
DFAB = 0
DFBA = (3EI/26)/(3EI/26+3EI/40) = 0.606
DFBC = (3EI/40)/(3EI/26+3EI/40) = 0.394
DFCB = 0

Using equilibrium of each member, find the support reactions:

MA = 0 47.215-104.3-20(12)+26BY = 0 BY = 11.426kips
Fy = 0 AY = 20-11.426 = 8.574kips
MB = 0 40CY + 104.3 147.85 1(40)(20) = 0 CY = 21.089kips
Fy = 0 BY = 1(40)-21.089 = 18.911kips
Total BY = 11.426 + 18.911 = 30.337 kips
Shear and moment diagrams using reactions and moments that were found are
shown below.

When 1k force acts at B, in the

downward direction,
AY = 1 (X/30)
X = 18 ft
AY = 1 (18/30) = 0.4
CY = 1-0.4 = 0.6

But, RB =1
So, RB-Left = 1 - RB-Right
