Thesis Statement: I want to inform you about the stereotype of designers in TV shows,

specifically about entry, values, gender and competition; Ill present to you that they do
not match with the reality of being in the fashion industry.
INTRODUCTION
I. Attention getter: What do you picture when you think of high fashion designers
and people who are associated with fashion industry which includes all the
accessories and shoes because they are now all part of the fashion industry.
II. Listener relevance: I would guess that most of you guys pictured at least some of
the fashion designers wear unique clothes and dresses like celebrities to work.
However, this is not the case. Not all designers dress and act in certain ways, they
are all from the stereotype that all of us see in the media.
III. Speaker credibility: Ive always been interested in design and through culture
exploring essay I got to conduct two interviews with people who worked in the
design field.
IV. Thesis statement: Specifically, I want to inform you about the stereotypes in the
fashion design industry and compare and contrast it to the TV shows and how its
like in real life regarding entry, values, genders and competition.
BODY
I. In the TV show Jane by Design the main character becomes a member of fashion
design culture by applying for the internship but ends up getting a full time job as
an executive assistant of a famous designer, name Gray. How she got her job she
changed her document to look like she was an adult when she was not. This cant
happen in real life because first of all she is not an adult yet and it is illegal to
falsify a document like Jane did. The second reason this cannot happen is because
the industry is not loose like whats shown on TV shows. The industry looks
thoroughly through at your applications. In reality, you can get an internship
under fashion designers or work as an assistant for the designer when you are at
least 18 years old. In addition, to become a designer most people go through
formal education. Once you become a member then you have to look at where
you will place your values in.
II. Jane begins her work as an assistant of a designer, and in one episode when Gray
sees Jane with an unsophisticated purse she says the bag you carry is who you
are and who you want to be. In this statement she implies that fashion is the most
important factor of a human being. With this being said the audience assumes that

Gray values the outward appearance the most. In reality form is not the most
important aspect of fashion design. In the culture of design they place values in
two different categories, form and function. Some value more in the appearance
and others value more in function. Most people make connection between fashion
and women and assume that women are the majority than men in the fashion
design culture however this is just a stereotype.
III. Women is prominent in the fashion industry but there are significant amount of
men as well. Even in the TV show, only one man is presented as a designer and
the rest are the women designers and other assistants. However, in reality quite a
number of men designers are into the fashion design. In fact, most of the famous
brands are all designed by male designers such as Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs,
Ralph Lauren, and Dolce Gabbana. Within these industries they cant avoid the
competitions.

IV. Gray and her previous assistant India are competitive with one another. India is
constantly trying to take Grays position. Also India constantly distracts Jane
intentionally to make Jane to make mistakes; like ruining and stealing the dress
for the runway show. India wants to start over working for Gray if India cant
take over Grays position. This competition is important in our social life but it is
a bit exaggerated in the TV shows. However, this competition does occur to the
fashion industry and it is competitive enough that Heidi Klum says One minute
you are in. And the next, you are out. In real life everyone has to compete with
each other and unless a person is really super crazy about winning and being the
first one, no one does what India had done in the TV show. But since there are
limited amount of job openings to the fashion designers it is extremely hard to
become a star and even if you became a star its hard to keep up with the
popularity.
CONCLUSION
Restatement of thesis: The stereotype of fashion designer is very different from the
fashion designers at work.
Main point view: We have examined today at the stereotypes of fashion designer that are
portrayed and depicted in our daily TV shows but it is not the same in real actual working
place. It is most likely opposite of the stereotype. In regards to the fashion industry,
portrayals of entry, values and gender are unrealistic but the competition.
Clincher: If you see a person with high fashion dont automatically judge that the person
is involved in the fashion industry. The person could just want to look nice or is going to

a party. So if you meet a designer dont assume that these portrayals represent their
character.
