Janel Brandtjen will be representing the area at the county and

state levels after the start of the new year.
Brandtjen, who was first elected to the Waukesha County
Board in 2008, was elected to the state Assembly in November,
filling the seat of Don Pridemore, who opted not to seek another
term. Brandtjen recently announced that she will keep her seat on
the County Board, citing concerns about the current direction of
the board.
"Waukesha County is raising taxes instead of cutting them,
increasing spending when they should be decreasing spending
and growing the size and scope of government. Thats everything
Ive been fighting against," Brandtjen said. "Weve seen this kind
of Tommy Thompson governing in the 90s, right now tax money
is easy to come by in Waukesha; we need to give it back to the
people.
Brandtjen was one of three votes against the Waukesha
County budget. Brandtjen expressed concern over public private
partnerships which she says increases the size of government
"The projections are always inaccurate as well. The golf courses lose over $400,000; the material recovery facility lost
$215,000. After years of looking the other way, the (county historical) museum was finally cut loose," Brandtjen said.
Brandtjen also raised concern of how money is being spent in
the parks area.
"We could cut money for paving parking lots in parks, cut
money from parkland acquisition. I proposed to combine the clerk
and board offices to save a bundle of money, especially if the
county is serious about going to a part time board chairman," she

...Voted against county budget

From page 1
said.
Brandtjen also raised concerns about
the planned $90 million for a new courthouse project which she indicated was
done "without much discussion or vetting
regarding what is needed and what is not."
The budget put forth by County
Executive Dan Vrakas and supported by 22

of the 25 county supervisors was not horrific. It probably could be described as not
that bad. It is my opinion that not that bad
is no longer good enough," Brandtjen said.
"We had an opportunity to slim down the
budget in a variety of areas and set the
tone for reduced government here in
Waukesha County but we missed it
because suddenly not that bad is as good
as it gets.

Falls village president wont

seek re-election
Menomonee Falls Village President
Randy Newman will not seek another term
as village president.
Newman confirmed he will not seek
another term when reached for comment
following the Nov. 17 Village Board meeting.
Im not running again, Newman
said.
Newman
was
first
elected
Menomonee Falls village president in
2009 and was re-elected in 2012. He was
elected village president after serving two
terms as a trustee.

Newman said when he was elected

village president he said he planned to
serve two terms.
I think thats enough time for me on
the board, four as a trustee, six as a village president, Newman said. Its time
for other peoples ideas to come forward.
This isnt a lifetime job for me. My decision
was back then, six years ago, that if I was
elected to two terms that would my selfimposed term limit. Let someone else move
on step forward and hopefully do a better
job.

History of St. Nicholas

The true story of Santa Claus
begins with Nicholas, who was
born during the third century in
the village of Patara. At the time
the area was Greek and is now
on the southern coast of Turkey.
His wealthy parents, who raised
him to be a devout Christian, died
in an epidemic while Nicholas
was still young. Obeying Jesus'
words to "sell what you own and
give the money to the poor,"
Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the
sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and
was made Bishop of Myra while
still a young man. Bishop
Nicholas became known throughout the land for his generosity to
the those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors
and ships.
Under the Roman Emperor
Diocletian, who ruthlessly persecuted Christians, Bishop Nicholas
suffered for his faith, was exiled

and imprisoned. The prisons were

so full of bishops, priests, and
deacons, there was no room for
the real criminalsmurderers,
thieves and robbers. After his
release, Nicholas attended the
Council of Nicaea in AD 325. He
died December 6, AD 343 in Myra
and was buried in his cathedral
church, where a unique relic,
called manna, formed in his
grave. This liquid substance, said
to have healing powers, fostered
the growth of devotion to
Nicholas. The anniversary of his
death became a day of celebration, St. Nicholas Day, December
6th (December 19 on the Julian
Calendar).
Through the centuries many stories and legends have been told
of St. Nicholas' life and deeds.
These accounts help us understand his extraordinary character
and why he is so beloved and
revered as protector and helper of
those in need.

scholarship from the University of Toledo. Submitted photo.

Townsend accepts
scholarship to Toledo
Germantown varsity volleyball player
Carly Townsend recently accepted an
offer to play volleyball at the University of
Toledo, an NCAA Division I which plays
in the Mid American Conference.
Townsend signed her national letter of
intent on Dec. 12.
She is a setter/right side hitter. She
began the recruiting process the winter
through summer of her sophomore year,
while she was playing club volleyball for
the Milwaukee Sting. After seeing five
other colleges, she visited the University
of Toledo, and said she really loved it.
Townsend received and accepted a verbal offer from the school coaching staff
that summer.
In a statement, Townsend said she
loves the volleyball facilities, the coaching
staff, the beautiful buildings on campus,

and the dorms.

She will join former Germantown volleyball player Maggie Johnston on the
team.
Townsend ended her senior season
being named first team All-State and also
made the All-State tournament team, first
team for the North Shore Conference and
was conference player of the year.
In a statement, Townsend thanked the
Germantown coaching staff as well her
coaches at the Milwaukee Sting club
team for their support.
I want to thank all my past Sting
coaches and also especially my
Germantown Varsity coaches Ted and
Kiarra Gollakner for placing me in leadership roles and promoting me as an outstanding player. I appreciate everything
they did, she said.

Free Admission to Christmas Silver
Tea & Christmas Cookie Sale
The Miller-Davidson House at Old Falls
Village will be open on Sunday, Dec. 7 from
14 p.m. for the annual Silver Tea. Festivelydecorated in a nostalgic Christmas theme,

Over The River and Through the Falls. The

Menomonee Falls Historical Society will offer
free admission, parking and refreshments for
this event. Donations are gratefully accepted.
A Christmas Cookie Bake Sale will be held in
the Public House. Mrs. Santa will pay a visit
and read stories to the children.
Tour this lovely, restored home which was
once the summer home of Emma Davidson of
Harley-Davidson. Ladies, gentlemen and children will enjoy tea, coffee and homemade
Christmas cookies as they savor the sights and
smells of days gone by. The home will be decorated by members of the historical society
and supported by Bank of Memories &
Flowers and Shady Lane Greenhouse.
The Miller-Davidson house anchors the 22
acre historical park at Old Falls Village. Built in
1858 in the Greek Revival style popular at the
time, the house is built of locally quarried limestone with mortar lime coming from the lime
kilns. The Miller-Davidson House, original to
the site, is special in many ways beginning with
an unusual arched foundation. In 1935 it was
selected by the Federal Government's Historic
American Building Survey. And in 1973 the
National Register of Historic Places listed this
beautiful early American farm home among
those to be preserved for future generations.
The house has not been restored to its original
state but is presented as a house improved as
lifestyles improved. It now houses an eclectic
decorative arts collection.
Old Falls Village is located at the corner of
Hwy. Q and Pilgrim Road in Menomonee
Falls. See www.oldfallsvillage.com for more
information.

Decorating ideas
(NAPSI)While holiday decorations are a
great way to spread the joy of the season, you
have to make sure theyre safe.
Tips To Help:Whether you decorate
indoors, outdoors or both, there are certain
electrical safety tips you need to keep in mind:
First, always purchase electrical decorations and lights from reputable retailers and
make sure theyve been approved by a nationally recognized testing laboratory such as
Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Intertek (ETL)
or Canadian Standards Association (CSA).
Next, plan out your decoration arrangements so no outlet is overloaded and no cords
are pinched by furniture or under rugs. Once
youre ready to decorate, inspect all electrical
decorations for cracked, frayed or exposed
wiring. These can pose shock and fire hazards
and should be thrown away. When hanging
holiday lights, dont connect more than three
strings of incandescent lights. Alternatively,
consider purchasing LEDs, which use less energy and let you safely connect more strings
together.
When decorating outdoors, bear in mind
that some common electrical products you use
inside, such as holiday lighting or extension
cords, may not be suitable for outdoor use.
Check each products labels or packaging to

determine whether its for indoor or outdoor

use. Outdoor electric lights and decorations
should be plugged into circuits protected by
ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs), which
are designed to protect from electrical shock
and electrocution. If circuits are not GFCI protected, you can get portable outdoor GFCIs
where electrical supplies are sold. They require
no special knowledge or equipment to install.
Once youve safely put up your decorations, continue to ensure your electrical safety
by turning off all electrical items before leaving
the house or going to bed. To reduce your risk,
its also important to keep Christmas trees
hydrated and at least three feet from heating
equipment or any open flame, such as a candle or fireplace.
Be vigilant about heeding these hints from
the experts at the Electrical Safety Foundation
International and give yourself the gift of safety this holiday season.

for the holiday season and beyond, visit
