Dear ECC-ites,
The first board meeting of the
Operating Companies (OCs) in ECC
was held in July 2008. This marked
the beginning of a positive step forward
in realizing the benefits of the
organizational restructuring towards
achieving accelerated growth and better
value creation in each OC.
Successful organizations focus on the
triple-bottom line Environment,
Society and Economy for long term
sustainability of the business. I am
happy to say that we have initiated the
process towards this by preparing the Companys first Corporate Sustainability Report
for the year 2007-08. As part of this, ECC Division has prepared a detailed report on
Corporate Sustainability covering most of the 79 indicators as per GRI-G3 (Global
Reporting Initiative 3rd Generation) guidelines. We have prepared an action plan for
the year 2008-09 and are implementing the same. Some of the key points include
focus on Green buildings, greening supply chain, measuring and monitoring water
and electricity consumption.
L&T has always been a socially conscious organization striving to reach the society at
large including the underprivileged. In keeping up with this tradition, there was an
overwhelming response from L&T-ites in providing relief towards the flood-affected
in Bihar. I thank all those who have contributed to this in various forms showing our
empathy with the needy and extending our vision beyond business concerns.
With our enhanced focus on both the domestic and the international market I am
happy that our Company has moved up in the rankings of global contractors. In a
survey of Top 225 Global Contractors carried out by the reputed international
construction magazine Engineering New-Record, L&T, with an estimated revenue of
US $ 5.42 billion, has been ranked 40th, a steady improvement from 47th in 2007
and 54th in 2006. Today, L&T is ranked alongside the global giants like Ferrovial,
Daewoo E&C, Samsung C&T and Hyundai Engineering. I compliment all ECC-ites
on their contribution to this achievement. Initiatives on operational efficiency and
optimal projects focussing on large and mega projects on EPC and turkney basis are
the vital factors for positioning the Company among the top global E&C companies.
I am happy to note that Technology Centre (TCII) of L&T Infotech at Chennai has
won the prestigious Ultratech Award for Outstanding Concrete Structure of Tamil
Nadu; LPG Storage Project at SALPG Vizag, the Sarvamangala Award for excellence
in construction; Bakreswar Thermal Power Plant Project, the Golden Peacock Safety
Award and the Henning Holck-Larsen (HHL) Centre at ECC HQ, the Public Relations
Society of Indias Golden Jubilee Award in recognition of the unique PR Initiative.
Congratulations to the winners for putting in their best efforts and bringing laurels
to the organizations. These acknowledgements are a testimony to L&Ts global
benchmarks. I take this opportunity to reiterate that we need to make continued
efforts in setting industry benchmarks while meeting future challenges.

L&T Ranks 40th among Top 225 Global Contractors

ENR 2008 Survey
L&T figures among the top 225 construction contractors in the world
as per ENR 2008 Survey made by Engineering News-Record (ENR), a
weekly magazine published by McGrawHill Publishing Company, New
Jersey, USA.
In its annual issue dated August 18, 2008, ENR published the list of 225
largest construction contracting firms from around the world. The findings
of the survey appear in two categories as List of Top 225 International
Contractors and Top 225 Global Contractors based on the construction
contracting revenues in 2007.
While the first category takes into consideration each participant companys
construction contracting revenues outside its home country, the second
category of Global Contractors is based on contracting revenues from
within the companys home country as well as outside.
On this basis L&T ranks 40th among top Global Contractors and 67th
among top International Contractors with its construction revenues
touching USD 5420 million (global) and USD 981 million
(International) respectively in 2007. During last year, L&T was ranked
47th among Global Contractors and 72th among International
Contractors.
ENR is the most widely read and respected award winning magazine devoted to construction industry. It covers the
business and technical news of global business and construction industry. Professionals and marketers alike rely on ENR,

L&T among Forbes Asias Fabulous 50

Ten Indian companies have made it to the Fabulous 50 list published by
Forbes Asia this year, reiterating the strong growth story in the Indian
sub-continent.
L&T is the only Engineering and Construction Company in India to feature in
the list. This is the second annual Fabulous 50 list from Forbes of Asia-Pacifics
publicly traded companies with revenues or market capitalization of at least
$5 billion. The magazine carried details of the companies in its issue dated
September 15, 2008.
Forbes Asia selected the winners based on longterm profitability, sales and earnings
growth, stock price appreciation and projected earnings for every company in the
region. Other Indian companies in the list are: BHEL, Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank,
Infosys, ITC, Mahindra & Mahindra, RIL, Tata Steel and Wipro. Founded in
1917, Forbes is an American publishing and media company. Its highly respected

Awards Galore for Best Safety Practices in
Quarry Operations
To give due recognition to outstanding safety performance, Ministry
of Labour, Govt. of India, instituted the National Safety Awards (Mines)
in 1983. During August every year, on the basis of outstanding
performance, National Safety Awards (Mines) are presented to various
mines in different zones.
Based on the best mining practices
adopted in terms of overall
performance, supervision, welfare and
medical facilities for the workmen,
handling, usage and storage of
explosives, safety measures, etc.,
quarries were selected and awards are

Nadu Kerala State Mines Safety

Rheodynamic Concrete Prize 2007

Indian Concrete Institute and BASF the leaders in construction
chemicals, award prizes for pioneering work in self compacting
concrete carried out in construction industry. Their evaluation
process requires submission of papers based on work carried out
during 2006 and 2007 highlighting the salient features of a project,
construction methodology adopted and the advantages derived by
using self-compacting concrete with adequate project photographs.

With this, L&T-ECCD has bagged the prize for the third consecutive
time. The first award was for DMRC Station Building for the year 2005
and the second was for SVBT Kolkata Bridge Girders for the year 2006.

The Institution of Engineers (India) is the largest multidisciplinary engineering professional society, established with
a view to promote and advance the science, practice and
business of engineering.
It is a matter of great honour that she is the first person

to receive this title, introduced for the first time by IEI.
Nominations were received from women engineers who
have excelled in various fields of engineering in government
and private organizations and she was selected as the most
deserving engineer based on her contributions to the field
of engineering.
The recipient, Mrs. M.F. Febin, joined L&T as PGET in

the year 1994. She was the co-coordinator and design
in-charge of HITEX international trade fair centre,
Hyderabad, which is the first of its kind designed and built
by L&T; Swami Vivekananda exhibition centre, Mauritius
and St. Anns School, Bangalore. This apart, she was
involved in the design of many major cement plant
structures, office buildings etc.

occasion of Engineers Day celebrations and 148th Birth

Global Scenario for Urban Development
Workshop on Precast Technology in Housing and Infrastructure

L&T-ECC in association with Institute of Civil
Engineering (UK) Chennai Chapter and Asian Concrete
Construction Institute Singapore organized a workshop
on Precast Technology in Housing and Infrastructure at
ECCs Convention Centre, HQ Chennai during September
24-26, 2008.
The workshop provided an opportunity to discuss the
international technologies for infrastructure development
using precast techniques from concept to project. Dr. B.
Sivarama Sarma, Head R&D, L&T-ECC and ICE Country
Representative Chennai, organized the event. The
emphasis was on providing solutions for Indias urban
development through massive housing development
projects using new technological advancements in
construction.
Mr. K.V. Rangaswami, President (Construction) and
Patron, ICE Chennai Chapter inaugurated the workshop.
Senior executives and managers from L&T as well as
representatives from other industries in the construction
sector took part in the programme which comprised 20
technical sessions spanning two and half days.
On Day 1, Professor Devdos Menon and Dr. V.V. Nori,
discussed the fundamentals of materials, structural members
and the innovative precast structural configurations which
were applied since the 1960s in construction of various

Management. Dr. A. Ramakrishna, former Deputy
Managing Director, L&T, explained chronologically the
development works and application of precast technology
in L&T and in India. He stressed the need to take forward
the precast technology in future with good detailing practice
which should be simple, efficient and durable.
KVR visits Panvel Complex

Panvel Complex is a multiple activity centre contributing
to domestic and international construction in the fields of
preservation, transit storage, P&M services/training centre
and Construction Skills Training Institute (CSTI).
Mr. K.V. Rangaswami (KVR), Member of the Board &
President (Construction) visited Panvel Complex on October
15, 2008, accompanied by Mr. M. Ramesh Mohan,
Regional Manager, Mumbai. The growth and achievements
of the Panvel complex were presented to KVR by Mr. S.

Narayanan and Mr. M. Ramesh Mohan. Mr. A. Janakumar,
Regional Training Manager, CSTI described the new
dimensions of the CSTI. KVR expressed his happiness at
the sincerity and good efforts undertaken by the Panvel
team in housekeeping, providing P&M services and CSTI
training. To mark his visit, few saplings were planted at
Panvel complex.

China Procurement - A Cost-effective Sourcing Venture

In early 2005, L&T-ECC ventured into an Operational
Excellence program called Project Kohinoor, with a strong focus
of improving our bottom line. Apart from Project Management
initiatives, sub-contractor management and working capital
management, procurement transformation was a key aspect
which was looked into.
A fact which came to light was that our line of business faces
stiff pressures for material on multiple fronts such as technology/
product features, cost and delivery schedule. Project Kohinoor
proposed expansion of the existing supply base by venturing
into other low cost countries. After due diligence on possible
destinations across Asia and Eastern Europe, we narrowed down
on China.

Against a steep target for sourcing, China procurement office
felt its first blow with the volatility in the steel prices. At this potentially difficult time, Mr. T.S. Sundaresan (VP & Head
- Materials Management and Vendor Development) and the Senior Management stood by us and gave us key insights
on the way forward. Encouraged and motivated, the China procurement office devised a mitigation strategy to expand
the supplier base for other categories, critical to each OC.
The office, housed under the representative office of L&T Shanghai, is headed by Mr. K. Veeramani and supported by
Mr. Sandeep Kumar and Mr. Sameer Momaya. With the help of Accenture Business Consulting, who have partnered with
us from the days of Kohinoor, we have formally completed a successful year.

China is viewed as an economic and global powerhouse; however there is an apprehension in India of Chinese products
being inferior. The root
cause of this fear lies in
the innumerable Chinese
goods, such as small toys
and hi-tech equipment,
which
flood
our
domestic markets. To
start with, this scenario
has put the China
procurement initiative
on the back step. Add
to this concerns of
longer lead time and
serviceability, which
prove to be serious
challenges in sourcing
material from China,
and the pace of the
construction business,
with
our
ensuing
operations also having
hastened and the result
is
the
fact
that
procurement is now
limited to the activity of
buying as opposed to the

HQ Campus
In the past one year, China Procurement Office, under

the guidance of HQ Materials has risen up to this
task of overcoming the aforementioned challenges
and seizing available opportunities. The office has
met several stakeholders, OC Leaders, clients, external
architects, EDRC architects/coordinators, project
execution teams in its efforts to instill confidence in
the robust sourcing process established, to identify
top Tier-I/Tier-II suppliers, capable of delivering
material meeting our specifications at the most
competitive price within stiff time deadlines. Project
teams, which have visited China to evaluate our
suppliers, have become our champions in this effort
and are committed to using this office for any future
requirements.
Our business has grown multifold and order booking

progress with Mr. T.S. Sundaresan and Mr. M. Chandrasekaran
suppliers also have grown in a similar, if not faster
pace. This scenario poses a unique opportunity for us to

visited China to explore the possibility of sourcing EHV
transformers and cables. Stake-holders are now involved
in discussions with the Chinese suppliers for strategic
pre-bid tie-ups, a move that is in line with the vision
and business acumen that has always been ECCs
trademark in the construction industry
Key Highlights & Achievements of the

China Procurement Office

China Procurement Office came into existence in the

first week of October 2007, and comprises a 5-member
team here in HQ, and a 4-member team in Shanghai
In order to effectively open channels of demand
aggregation with our Business Units, CPO scheduled a
Joint Steering Committee Meeting on October 5th with
senior management, who nominated various points of
contact from their BUs to liaison with CPO office
One of the earliest and most fruitful visits to
selected suppliers was conducted in November 2007,
by K.V. Srikanth, Manager (Formwork) and
Mr. N. Srinivasan, Executive (Formworks).
China Procurement Office realized its first order (with
complete end-to-end responsibility) in the furniture
requirement for Singroli site. Although the order value
was only INR 13 Lakhs, the order consisted of a variety
of furniture, ranging from sofa sets to beds to tables.
In February 2008, V. Sukumar Hebbar, Chief ArchitectEDRC (B&F) and Mr. S. Natrajan, Head (CSTI),
visited China to explore the possibility of sourcing
finishing items for CSTI projects. The visit was
successful as orders for furniture, worth approximately
INR 32 Lakhs materialized from the visit.
Following the success of such previous visits, CPO
organized for the visit of Mr. K. Nagendra, RPM
(B&F), in April 2008, which resulted in orders placed
for tiles and sanitary and CP fittings, with the intention
of setting up a mock-up at South City, Bangalore.
In June 2008, Mr. S. Virapan, Chief Engineering

Manager (BUCC), visited China in order to conduct
techno-commercial discussions with the short-listed
sanitary and CP fitting suppliers. As a result, several
samples were selected, and CPO is in the process of
obtaining approval for these samples, for usage in the
TC-III project.
In the period from June to July 2008, CPO was involved
in conducting visits to project sites in various regions
(BLRO, CNRO, KKRO, DLRO etc.) to understand
the project teams requirements, and cater to them
effectively.
In August 2008, CPO conducted an EDRC workshop,
which was attended by key stakeholders from EDRC
and B&F senior management. Though the fool-proof
process adopted by the CPO in the selection of vendors
was explained at length, as an abundant measure of
precaution, it was decided by the stakeholders that the
materials from China should be tried out in one of
the projects (TC-III, Chennai).
In August and September 2008, CPO made
presentations to senior management from DPBU and
E&GO. Both were very well received, and CPO has
received excellent traction from project teams.
In September 2008, CPO successfully unveiled the

by Mr. K.V. Rangaswami. Since then the facility has

been visited by several stake-holders, who have evinced
interest in finishing items from China.

Challenges in Sourcing from the Land of the Orient

When we arrived here in Shanghai, there were lot of
doubts and presumptions related to quality of material.
However, we were soon proved wrong and were amazed
to see the manufacturing facilities and scale of
production which incorporate state-of-the-art technology,
resulting in a complete change of mindset towards
materials from China.
China has also been partly responsible for this view
with its closed door economy, until the recent Olympics.
The way the event was conducted was an eye opener to
the outside world and now China is looked upon in a
different light. There is a rush of companies from the
rest of the world setting up offices in China and sourcing
from here. Concerns regarding quality were quashed by
the superlative display of technology, execution capability
and hospitality witnessed during the Olympics.
Ours has been a journey full of challenges from The China Procurement Office Team: (from left to right)

with the local culture. Our work involves continuous
business travel across the length and breadth of China to identify & locate the potential sources/suppliers for
various building materials, construction equipments etc. to cater to the project requirements in India, Middle East
and Sri Lanka.
Over the past 2 years, we have converted many big enquiries/requirements into POs, for e.g. sourcing of
31600MT of HRC for Bisalpur water supply project from Shangang Steel. For construction equipments such as
Crawler Cranes, which were earlier sourced through an Indian agent from a single supplier, we identified more
suppliers and created stiff competition among Chinese manufacturers, resulting in great cost efficiencies for the
company.
Another challenge we faced was the lack of brand equity for L&T with local suppliers as not many suppliers knew
of this Indian construction giant. Though we are the No. 1 Engineering and Construction company in India,
China is host to a number of construction companies which are much bigger than us. However, through frequent
interaction with suppliers and dedicated marketing efforts, we have built a good rapport with the suppliers and
generated confidence, a necessary ingredient to build long lasting business relationships.
Another difficulty we continuously face is the language barrier, as the majority of people in China still do not
speak English. To overcome this, we take Chinese language lessons, which help us build cordial relations with
suppliers and a stronger case during negotiations, as well.
Our office has been guided and supported by Mr. J.J. Shrikande, Vice President & Country Head China, who
helped us understand the above challenges. We also understand the nature of the market a sellers market in
which companies from developed countries who take quicker decisions profit from a multitude of benefits such
as superior quality, faster delivery and lower cost.

SITE INSIGHT
Largest Integrated Steel Plant for Bhushan Steel

Bhushan Steel Limited (BSL) is a fully integrated 1.5
Million TPA steel making company and the largest
manufacturer of auto-grade steel in India with 7 world
class ISO 9000 certified plants at Chandigarh, Derabassi,
Kolkata and Orissa in India. Currently for their
Meramandali plant in Orissa, L&T-ECC is executing a stateof-the-art 2.2 Million-Ton-Per-Annum (MTPA) integrated
steel plant with a capacity to enhance up to 4 MTPA. The
plant is being developed in a phased manner at a cost of
around Rs. 5,500 crore.
The first phase of the plant has been commissioned with
4 kilns, a 110-MW power plant, steel melt shop and raw
material handling facilities. Trial production of sponge iron
(6,80,000 tpa) and billet (3,00,000 tpa) has already been
started.
As part of the phase II expansion, L&T has initially been
entrusted with the execution of Steel Melt Shop (SMS) II,
Hot Strip Mill (HSM), water complex and coke oven plant.
The scope of work involves all civil, structural, piping and
equipment works with an order value of Rs.1400 Million.
Impressive all round performance and timely deliveries has

guided Bhushan Steel to award EPC orders totaling
Rs.20,000 million to L&T. Presently L&T is executing all
major works for Bhushans integrated steel plant in a single
location.
Major scope of works comprises civil, structural, equipment
and piping work for Steel Melt Shop (SMS), caster, reheating furnace, Hot Strip Mill, water complex of SMS
and HSM, coke oven plant; construction of three overhead
tanks and three chimneys (120m high); construction of
50 km road and drains; supply of three stacker reclaimer
(1500 tph) with 3.5 km conveyor; Engineering
Procurement and Construction (EPC) of 2.5 MTPA Blast
Furnace (3814 cu.m); EPC of two Sinter Plants (204
sq.m.); electrical and instrumentation works for SMS, caster,
re-heating furnace and Hot Strip Mill.
Major quantities for SMS II, HSM and coke oven includes
4,60,000 cu.m of concreting, 47,600t of structural
fabrication and erection, 35,000t of equipment erection,
3700t of piping fabrication and erection.

Mr. T. Kumaresan (TK), Project

Manager, involved in this project right
from the tendering stage, says For the
first time ECC is executing the steel
and iron making units concurrently for
an integrated steel plant. From an initial
value of Rs. 140 Crore, the scope has
increased to Rs. 2000 Crore, comprising complete civil,
structural, piping, equipment erection with electrical and
instrumentation works.
The increase in scope, he says, is due to the faith reposed
by the client in L&Ts capabilities. The site has achieved
several milestones and set benchmarks in execution. Citing
some of the major achievements, he says, We have achieved
35 million safe man-hours which is the highest in ECC,
completed 3.5 lakh cu.m. of concrete in 18 months and
40,000t of fabrication and almost 32,000t of erection in
17 months. We have fabricated, assembled and erected the
single largest crane girder for a span of 43m and 181t at
site. Apart from these, the scope also involves execution of
many critical civil structures whose spans range from
El(-)30 m deep to El(+)56 m high.
Among the various challenges, he cites labour management
as one of the most critical aspects. With a requirement of
close to 10,000 workmen, mobilizing and retaining skilled
workmen was a tough proposition. As the project is in a

remote locale, providing necessary accommodation and
facilities for the workmen was vital. Close to 6500
workmen stay in the colony within the site premises.
Filtered water, medical facilities with a full time doctor
and para medical staff have been arranged for the workmen
in the colony. Since the area is malaria prone, precautionary
measures have been adopted and stringently monitored.
TK states that more than 70% of the civil labourers are
locals which has helped in maintaining industrial harmony.
TK attributes the success of the project to team work,
ably supported by Mr. T. Azhaguvel, Regional Manager,
Kolkata and Mr. R.C. Pandey, then Sector Projects Manager,
who were instrumental in mobilizing resources and
supporting all other endeavours. TK states that safety is
another factor which has contributed to the achievements.
Frequent safety orientation programmes, e-learning
packages, and need based training ensured that safety issues
are communicated and awareness created among workmen.
TK says, We started with an item rate contract but
through impressive performance have convinced the client
to award EPC contracts and today we are executing Rs.
2000 Crore plus quantum of works. With more orders on
the anvil, we are seeing this place as another Steel City in
the making

Mr. Tinanjan Mitra (TM), Sr.

Construction Manager (SMSII,
HSM, Coke Oven, Sinter plant,
Stacker-reclaimer and Conveyor
packages), says, Our hands are full.
We are currently executing the
structural, civil and equipment erection
works for the steel melting plant, hot
strip mill, water complex and coke
oven. The scope also includes bulk material handling which
involves installation of 3 stacker reclaimers, fabrication and
erection of conveyor for 3 km, and execution of two sinter
plants under EPC contract.
TM states that works commenced from January 2007 and
around 3.5 lakh cu.m. of concreting has been completed
against the total scope of 4.6 lakh cu.m. The structural
scope which was initially 40,000t has increased to 47,600t.
41,000t of fabrication and 33,000t of erection have been
completed. The equipment scope which comprises 30,000t
has just begun with around 4,800t being executed. Out of
the total piping scope of 3000t, 1300t of fabrication and
900t of erection has been executed. The contractual
completion date is March 2009. The Sinter plant is
scheduled for completion in June 2010. TM states that the
works are progressing in the right direction for completion
within the stipulated period.
With regard to the challenges, TM says, it was a unique
situation as there was no boundary wall and posed several
hardships during the initial phase of the project. The project
has a huge requirement of skilled workmen with the
carpenters alone being close to 1000 during peak activity.
TM says that since there is no accommodation available
nearby the vicinity of site, a labour colony was constructed
within the site premises. At present, close to 6500 workmen
are accommodated in the labour colony which is being
further expanded.
Having met the clients expectation by completing the
various works as per schedule, the project is poised for
securing additional packages in the near future. TM says,
prior experience of SMS/HSM at TISCO and knowledge
of the work complexities were instrumental for the
successful execution of this project. Due to the rocky
nature of the soil, civil jobs at times had to be done at
(-)30m. The work area being limited, one had to confine
within the given space even to execute the huge fabrication.
The site has achieved a peak output of 6200t of fabrication,
30,000 cu.m. of concreting and 4000t of erection in a
month.
TM highlights that safety and quality standards adhered to
at site are the highest considering the huge quantity of
fabrication and erection of critical structural columns. The
site recently achieved 35 million safe man hours and
received a safety appreciation certificate from the client.
TM attributes the success of the project to team effort and
says that it is another integrated steel plant in the making.

Mr. R. Ganesh (RG), Construction

Manager, Blast Furnace, says the
plant will be the first integrated steel
plant in the state of Orissa. The blast
furnace with a capacity of 2.5 Million
Tonnes per Annum (MTPA) is similar
to the one executed in TISCO. The
job has been secured by a consortium
with the total value being around Rs. 1200 crore out of
which ECCs scope is Rs.760 Crore. Commencing from
April 2008, the works are to be completed in 28 months.
RG states that the job is in the initial phase and the
foundation draft casting is to be finalized shortly. RG
highlights that a well knit team has been established and
works are progressing in the right direction. Sourcing of
skilled workforce was a tough task due to the remote locale
and harsh climatic condition.
Mr. Priyadarshan Barua (PB),
Construction Manager (Mechanical),
In-charge of all equipment, says that
the challenging task is in aligning of
the equipment since the tolerances
allowable are in microns. Starting from
static and rotary, each equipment is
unique in nature. Nineteen EOT cranes
ranging from 40t to 375t were installed
in SMSII and HSM building. PB states, Conarc furnace
shell was assembled and welded at site with zero defects.
PB also highlights that the most challenging task was
aligning the mould segments in caster area which was
completed successfully. As the job requires a great deal of
expertise, PB has collected data of his previous work which
he always finds useful and shares with and educates his
team.
Mr. Tarun Ghosh (TG), Construction
Manager (Mechanical), In-charge of
the structural works in SMSII, HSM
and Coke Oven, states that though the
scope of work increased from 40,000t
to 47,600t, the schedule remains the
same. TG states, My biggest challenge
is to release the work fronts to various internal customers.
With a huge quantum of mechanical works, around 3500t
of erection and 6200t of fabrication per month, TG says,
We are in a comfortable position, as all areas have covered
roof sheeting and fronts are released for equipment
erection.
Highlighting the challenges of the project, he says that the
complexities are many since the built up structure comprises
60% of the scope. The Steel Melt Shop is a critical activity
as it involves different technological structures and
equipment with maximum erection. Since the structural
building height is to the tune of 62m, ensuring safe working
methodology was one of the major issues which requires
constant review and monitoring.

Dhanasekar
(AD),
Construction Manager (Piping) and
In-charge for heavy lift erection says
that the scope involves 3700t of piping
work consisting of 7.25 lakhs Inch
meter erection and 3.25 lakhs Inch dia
welding. Hydraulic piping comprises a
major part of the works in Continuous
Slab Caster, Conarc and Hot Strip Mill.
AD highlights that hydraulic piping is a major challenge as
it involves a lot of tube bending and welding works. As the
job involves a lot of heavy lifting activities, detailed scheme
preparation, methodology and planning are done prior to
the lift. The team is briefed on the process and the criticality
of the assignment.
He cites the lifting of a 181t crane girder of 43m x 3.5m
x 2.5m span to elevation at +30m with the help of a single
crane as a major milestone achievement. An EOT crane,
two 140t cross trolleys and 100t forced draft coolers were
also assembled and lifted in a single piece which saved
considerable time, manpower and effort.
Mr. Arup Kumar Ray (AKR),
Construction Manager (Civil), says,
We started our race towards achieving
3 lakh cu.m. of concrete and as on
date we have a scope of 4.6 lakhs,
having successfully completed more
than 3.5 lakh cu.m. in eighteen
months. The first challenge was the
commissioning of the batching plant within 15 days from
the commencement of works.
He says, In the first month we have completed 5000
cu.m. of concrete where the most challenging assignment
was the single pour of 2500 cu.m. concrete for the Conarc
furnace, the largest pour in the project being 12,000 cu.m.
for the re-heating furnace foundation. To achieve this, 1320t
reinforcement steel was cut, bent and placed in short period
of 38 days.
AKR highlights that the Hot Strip Mill is the most critical
and sophisticated structure of the project. The mill bay is
of size 431m x 35m wherein the state-of-art roughing and
finishing mill is housed. The slab thickness in the roughing
and finishing mill area is 2.5m.
The dimensional tolerances to be maintained for mill
foundations are very stringent. 4542 bolt boxes were to be
fixed, a Herculean task. Innovative work methodology was
adopted for shuttering works through 3.5m high steel
shuttering.
The entire task was completed within 14 months from the
date of excavation. AKR proudly says, I am getting
ready for the next challenge pour for the blast furnace
foundation.

Construction Manager, Electrical &
Instrumentation, highlights that the
electrical works valued at Rs.23.6 Crore
comprises cable laying and termination
for 3000 km as the major part. In
addition, L&T is entrusted with the
execution of 6 heavy duty transformers,
112 transformers, 550 HT vertical panels, electrical works
for Hot Strip Mill and Steel Melt Shop. APM states that
most of the cable tray work is completed in the SMSII area
and cable laying will start shortly and is confident of
completing the job within the targeted period.
Mr. Sunil Kumar Nayek (SKN),
Planning Manager (Civil), says
coordinating the huge volume of
concreting and structural works is a
Herculean task. Managing a mass of
workmen, providing them with the
accommodation
and
ensuring
uninterrupted flow of work is a
demanding activity.
Meticulous planning and constant monitoring are the key
factors for completion of the various schedules. Drawings
are immediately quantified and specialized items are followed
up for sourcing from clients. With the major part of the civil
works almost complete, the project is well poised for
completion within the stipulated period. SKN states
assignments at Bhushan Steel have come gradually unlike
a single order and this is a testimony of the faith reposed
by the client in L&Ts execution capabilities, the latest
package being the Rs. 32 Crore concrete road job inside the
plant.
Mr. R. Jayachandran (RJC),
Construction Manager (Civil), Incharge, Coke Oven and Slip Form,
highlights that the scope comprises
construction of two 0.84 MMTPA
batteries for Coke Oven which involves
84,000 cu.m. of concreting, 1.16 lakh
sq.m. of shuttering, and 6500t
reinforcement steel. Out of the total target, around 51,600
cu.m. of concreting, 62,000t of shuttering and 4000t
reinforcement have been completed. The challenging task
for RJC was constructing the battery foundation and other
foundations at El(-)12.0m with the critical structures
ranging up to El(+)40.0m. The battery gas pipes (around
3200 of them) had to be executed with stringent tolerances.
Being a critical task, special training was given to around
200 workmen executing high risk jobs. Though there were
many teething problems most of the works have been
streamlined. Additional works involve construction of six
120m high RCC chimneys and five overhead tanks by
slipform method. RJC asserts that the job is progressing in
the right direction and is scheduled for completion as per
the targets.

Mr. S.N. Subramanian (SNS),

Assistant Manager Planning (Civil),
feels that adhering to the construction
schedule, continuous review and
monitoring are the key elements for
the projects success. SNS views that
meticulous planning with WBS as
instrumental for various milestones
achieved at site as the scope involves multiple activities
which are interdependent. Reviewing daily inputs,
complying to the various standards and procedures and
taking stock of the deviations are some of the essentials
rigorously done at site. With huge scope for civil and
mechanical works, SNS emphasizes maximum achievement
in the shortest time was possible only through team effort.
Mr. C. Srinivas Rao (CSR),
Manager,
Accounts
&
Administration, says that being a
green field project there were many
political and local disturbances. The
local villagers were demanding labour
contract employment for mass
numbers. CSR highlights, We have
arranged good furnished family and bachelor
accommodation with requisite facilities at Angul, sufficient
transportation to all staff, and family welfare initiatives.
The ladies have formed a club which arranges monthly
get-togethers. During weekends, training programmes for
ladies on managing home front and drawing classes for
children are organized. As the workmen constitute close to
10,000, appropriate facilities and infrastructure have been
created for the accommodation ensuring a hygienic
environment. A full fledged first-aid centre with a full time
doctor and para-medical staff ensure that the basic medical
needs of the workers are met. We are maintaining a very
good relationship with the local villagers and administration
which is instrumental for the smooth progress of works at
site. As a part of corporate social responsibility, the site is
actively involved in many social initiatives. Activities such
as health check-up for school children, eye camp for staff
and workmen, AIDS awareness programme, blood donation
camp are regularly conducted.
Mr. Utpal Bhaduri (UB), Plant
Manager, states that it is an unique
job as the scope of civil and mechanical
works is equal. A large fleet of cranes
ranging from heavy duty, medium to
small, take care of the erection and
fabrication works. UB says, We have
a dedicated team which carries out
preventive maintenance regularly to ensure optimum
availability and we are able to maintain good availability
of P&M. UB states that working without a boundary
wall was one of the greatest challenges as one had to
always maintain vigil and ensure safety of equipments and
materials at site. He says that though it was a difficult

period, tremendous support from the site management saw

through the phase and the boundary wall was completed
in July 2008.
Mr. P.K. Mohapatra, (PKM),
Manager, Health
Safety
&
Environment, states that at Bhushan
Steel we have close to 10,000 workmen
deployed at site. Considering the huge
quantum of mechanical works, the
potential hazards are mainly from
material handling, working at heights,
deep excavation and working in confined spaces, all
workmen are screened prior to induction and then put
through a safety induction programme. Safety awareness is
created through daily safety talks, need based safety training,
spot demos for critical activities and refresher programmes.
Due to the presence of heavy machinery and cranes the
criticality is all the more. Some of the safety measures
adopted at site are periodic load check of all heavy lift
equipment, sensor system for all equipment. PKM cites,
Our efforts for all-round safety have won us the safety
appreciation certificate from Bhushan Steel for achieving
35 Million Safe Man-hours. Having seen through the initial
phase of the project, PKM is confident of achieving the
safety objectives.
Elias Misquith (EM), Manager,
Industrial Relations, says, As there
was no boundary wall, problems were
plenty during the initial days due to
local intervention but now we are in a
position from where we can progress.
With a labour force of 10,000 and
around 6500 workmen residing in the
colony, managing them and providing the necessary
infrastructure is a critical activity. An exclusive team
monitors the welfare activities. The management has
appointed a full time doctor along with para medical team
for first aid requirements. Lot of labour welfare measures
have been initiated at site to retain the workmen at site.
Mr. A. Maheswara Rao (AMR), Incharge Stores, highlights that working
in such a project is a unique experience
due to multiple assigments and EPC
contracts at different locations within
the plant area. The site progress
invariably depends on inflow of
materials whose procurement and
coordination is a challenging task. AMR strongly believes
that the secret of success is to understand people and entrust
the right job to right person, guide them in the right
direction by sharing work experience, motivating and
moulding people, ensuring their growth and seeing them
perform. He states, The happiest moment of my
professional life is the joy and pride I get after seeing the
success of those whom I have guided.
Konark Ladies Club

The ladies at Bhushan Steel Project have come together
and formed the Konark Ladies Club. They have been
organizing a variety of programmes benefitting the children
and ladies, as well as recreational activities. The club has
initiated regular programmes such as home safety training,
yoga classes for family members, weekend drawing classes
for children, debate and dance competitions for children,

jokes, antakshari, etc. Apart from the fun and fiesta, the
club is actively engaged in social activities and welfare
activities for the nearby villages. The local administration
and the client have appreciated the diverse activities of the
club.

Mr. V. Siva Prasad (VSP), General
Foreman P&M, is a veteran with 27
years of experience in ECC.
Commencing his career in 1980 as a
trainee at Rourkela Steel Plant Project,
VSP has served in a wide range of
projects, some of the milestone projects
being NALCO Damanjodi, Tenughat,
Chandil, Paradip, Haldia, Korba, and
Bhushan Steel, Angul.
VSP has worked with a wide range of
equipments ranging from heavy lift
cranes to sophisticated concreting
machinery. He highlights that technology
has undergone a sea change and
revolutionized construction activity.
When compared to the early days, the access to modern
Plant and Machinery has made work easy. At Bhushan
Steel, he views the erection as a critical activity considering
the huge quantum of mechanical works. He has tested a
wide range of equipment at site and ensures that they are
in good condition during the critical lifts. A native of

Kerala, VSPs family is based at Quilon, Kerala. Married to
Beena, the couple has two children Rishi and Mansha
aged 14 and 12 years respectively, studying in class X and
VIII.

Krishnendu Dutta (KD), Construction Manager (Mech)

with nearly twenty-four years of experience in diverse
industrial and power projects joined ECC in 1997. A 1984
Diploma holder in Mechanical Engineering, KD started
his career as a junior engineer trainee in Farakka Barrage
Project followed by successful stints at Western India
Enterprise, Chandrapur Thermal Power Station, Nirman
Associates, 2x500 MW boiler project for NTPC, Kaiga
KDs first assignment in ECC was at

Nagarjuna Fertilizer, Kakinada followed by
piping works for Haldia Petrochemicals,
IOCL Barauni, LNG Dahej, and BALCO
Korba, where he executed 10,000t of
structural fabrication and erection works,
and mechanical works for the coal handling
plant at Bakkreswar. Presently he is incharge of structural fabrication works at
Bhushan Steel, Angul. He views the
quantum of fabrication being executed at
Bhushan Steel as mammoth, totaling
around 1lakh t. Meticulous planning,
co-ordination and monitoring has enabled
him to execute 6200t in a single month which is the best
achievement in his career.
Married to Kakali Dutta, a Commerce Graduate and a
homemaker, the Duttas have two children Amrita and
Debojyodi, studying in 6th and 4th standard respectively.
Apart from his work, KD likes to spend time with his
family and pursue studies. He is presently doing his B.Tech.
and looks forward to further challenging assignments.
A Dedicated and Versatile Mechanical Engineer

For A. Arumugam Pillai (AAP) a native
of Kanyakumari district, its been an eventful
career in ECC spanning close to a decade.
A 1992 Diploma holder in Mechanical
Engineering from Central Polytechnic,
Chennai, AAP joined ECC in January 1998
after a brief stint with Artson Engineering
Mumbai.
His first posting was at Numaligarh, Assam
for a two and half year period which was
followed by assignments at IOCL Barauni,
and Haldia Petro Chemicals. Posted at
Bhushan Steel, AAP is in-charge of structural
erection works in the Steel Melt Shop, which
is the tallest structural building in the steel
plant.
He proudly states, Meticulous planning and
resource allocation has helped complete the major erection
works ahead of schedule.
Among his career milestones, he cites Vedanta Alumina
Lanjigarh as a special project which bagged the ROSPA
Award and appreciation from the client for the completion
of the 16m dia tank as per schedule with 100% quality and

safety measures. AAP feels that sincerity and dedication to

work are his strengths.
Married to Priya, a Commerce Graduate and a homemaker,
the couple is blessed with a one and half year old son
Abhisek.
A Steely Administrator
Ajoy Gangopadhyay (AG), a commerce graduate and a MBA
Finance from Indian Institute of Management Studies, Delhi, joined
ECC in October 2004 after successful stints with Dodsal Ltd.
Mumbai, and Madhukant Projects Ltd, wherein he was associated
with major steel and refinery projects.
AGs first assignment in ECC was at TISCO Jamshedpur extending
for three years. Following this he was posted to Bhushan Steel. He
highlights that the tenure at TISCO was instrumental in gaining
invaluable experience in administering steel projects. AG says, I
learned a lot from Jamshedpur, especially with regard to accounts
and administration issues. Bhushan being a project of similar nature,
AG saw this as an opportunity to implement and carry out the
systems and practices from his earlier assignment.
Being relatively new to ECC, AG finds the work culture and staff
welfare as one of the strong points of the organization. He says,
The initiatives for staff and workmen welfare adopted by L&T are
far superior to other companies. Highlighting his current
assignment, AG says, Though similar to TISCO, the project is
huge and needs to be completed to stringent deadlines. Having
considerable experience in administering steel projects, AG aspires
to handle an independent assignment in the near future.
An education buff, AG is on course to complete his second MBA
specializing in Insurance and Risk Management. Married to Chandra,
an Arts Graduate and an able homemaker, the couple has a 10 year
old son Aritra studying in class V. AG loves reading and listening
to old Hindi melodies.
Gives His Best

Kaushik Mitra (KM), a Diploma holder in Mechanical Engineering
from West Bengal State Council for Technical Education, started his
career with Paharpur Cooling Tower and has a diverse experience in
handling cooling tower assignments in India and abroad.
KM joined ECC in 2005 at Lafarge LBC Project in Meghalaya where
he handled the equipment erection and quarrying operations. This
was followed by assignments at Bakreshwar Thermal Power Project
for commissioning for a period of three months, Kolkata Regional
Office for supervising the equipment fabrication and Bhushan Steel in
October 2007.
KM cites LBC as one of the toughest assignments where one had to
cope with natural forces apart from arduous work conditions. Among
his major milestones, he highlights his foreign assignments in Jumeriah
Islands, Dubai and Iran where he single-handedly executed the cooling
towers. He says that at L&T the learning scope is enormous due to
the varied nature of projects. KM feels that his strength lies in giving
his best and never accepting defeat in any situation. Presently KM is
posted at Bhushan Steel site as in-charge of stacker reclaimer and
conveyor erection works.
Married to Debasri, an Arts Graduate and a homemaker, the Mitras
have a one and half year daughter Aishik. For KM cricket is a
passion. An active all rounder during his playing days, KM played for
his school and the popular local tourney Thums-up Cup in Kolkata.
Apart from cricket, he loves reading Sidney Sheldon novels.

A Multi-skilled Engineer
Sanjay Saha (SS), a Diploma in Mechanical
Engineering, made his professional debut in
ECC at RPL Jamnagar in 1997 as a DET.
His first assignment was in the QA/QC
Department. Following this he was posted at
the CDU/VDU unit where he was in-charge
executing the erection and commissioning of
five heaters. This was followed by assignments
at HPL Haldia where he was the planning incharge for piping works, IOCL Barauni, for
planning and site mechanical works, Nav Bharat
Ferroalloys Medamandali, and BALCO Korba.
SS cites BALCO Korba as one of his best
assignments, where he was looking after the
execution of four 275m high chimneys, coming
out of one RCC sheet, the highest in Asia. The
job won critical acclaim from the Chinese Client
SEPCO. SS views the stint as a period where
he learnt the intricacies of planning for civil
and mechanical works. Following this he was
posted at Bakreshwar Thermal Power Plant as
planning engineer for cooling tower and
chimney works. His role in the proper planning and
arrangement of resources within the limited time was highly
appreciated by the client.
In April 2007, he was posted at Bhushan Steel. SS is
presently in-charge of the complete mechanical and planning
works, co-ordination and monitoring with all MIS reports.
SS was also a member of the Hydro Carbon team which
developed the ALPS software which is now being used in

a broader way by E&C Division in Hydro Carbon Projects.
Married to Sudeshna, a Science Graduate, the Sahas
a five year old son Siddhartha studying in the junior
SS was a district level cricket player and a member
musical troupe during his college days and shares a
passion for cricket, music and singing.

As an Industrial Relations (IR) practitioner,
P.K. Das (PKD) has a key role to perform
ensuring the welfare and safety of the staff and
workmen, maintaining a peaceful work
environment and fulfilling a vital role at project
sites.
A 1991 Post Graduate in Literature & History
and Post Graduate Diploma in Labour and
Personnel Management from Sambalpur
University, PKD joined ECC in 1997 after a
brief stint with private construction firms.
His first assignment was at the SambalpurRourkela Road Project which was followed by
assignments at PPT Paradeep, NALCO Angul
and Bhushan Steel.
A native of Orissa, PKD says, Being a localite,
I know most of the people personally and that
makes labour management all the more effective.
Mobilization of 10,000 workmen was a tough task and
managing them a Herculean task, which was efficiently
done.

Wife Susama Das is a homemaker and the couple has two

children Priyasma 7 years, studying in class II and Krishna
1 years old. PKD has a passion for gardening and likes
playing cricket during his leisure time.
Has a Flair for Troubleshooting

at CPT, Haldia, extending for nearly seven
years. SKD views the period as a crucial phase
in his career as he had a first hand experience
of the innovative fabricating techniques done
by ECC for Hyundai Heavy Engineering.
This was followed by assignments at Piparwar
Coal Handling Project for Central Coal
Fields, Kolkata Regional Office for 2 years,
Hirakud Aluminum Plant and Bhushan Steel.
At Bhushan Steel, SKD is involved in the
erection of the blast furnace. He says that
though the expected completion schedule is
28 months, the internalized target for L&T
is to finish the job by 24 months. As the
works are similar in nature to the H-Blast
Furnace recently executed by L&T at Tata
Steel, Jamshedpur, SKD is confident that the
experience will stand in good stead for
achieving the targets.
S.K. De (SKD), Planning Manager for Blast Furnace at

Bhushan Steel, is a 1989 Diploma in Mechanical
Engineering. Joining as a DET, SKDs initial posting was
Wife Rupa has ably supported him in all his

endeavors. The Des are blessed with two
children Sounak and Sanchari studying in Class VII and
UKG. SKD enjoys trouble-shooting and is always ready
to give a helping hand at site even if it is outside his
purview of work.
Aspiring to Lead from the Front

For Sanjay Sahoo (SS), this is his
first assignment in ECC. A 2002
Diploma in Civil Engineering, SS
joined ECC in November 2006 after
brief stints with SM Construction,
Angul Road and Bridge Division.
Posted at Bhushan Steel from the
initial stage, SS states, It was a tough
phase as one had to establish the entire
supporting infrastructure for the
project. Sourcing of men and
material was a major task which had
to be planned to perfection.
Presently in-charge of the reheating
furnace, SS highlights the completion
of the slab cluster, 25,000 cu.m. of
concrete in nine months, finishing mill
in 2 months and reheating furnace in
one month as some of his major
achievements in the project.
He says at L&T there is a lot of opportunity to learn and
interact with experienced personnel. He is happy with the
freedom at work and attributes the environment to friendly
and motivating colleagues. SS states that his strength lies
in thorough planning and technical competence. Presently
pursuing his B.E., SS aspires to lead from the front and

nurtures ambition of leading mega projects in the near
future.
His wife Anandita Pradhan is an able homemaker. SS enjoys
playing cricket and reading vernacular dailies.

Planning is his Fort

Subashis Maity (SM), a 1999 Diploma in
Mechanical Engineering, joined ECC as a DET. These
ten years with ECC have been instrumental in him
gaining invaluable experience across diverse projects.
His first assignment was at Bakreshwar Thermal
Power Project which was followed by assignments at
Jodavaram, Lafarge LBC Project at Meghalaya,
Kolkata Regional Office and Bhushan Steel. SM
highlights that among the assignments, LBC Project
was the most challenging in terms of execution and
topography.
Being a planning man, SM ensured that resources
were planned according to work progress across the
remote stretches of the LBC. He saw to it that multiskilled workmen were appointed and sub-contractors
were given training to follow standard systems and
work procedures. SM says that team work,
development of sub-contractors, quality and safety
are important for any project.
Having seen through the execution front, SM aspires
to become a design expert and looks forward for a
challenging assignment in EDRC. Married to
Rwiddhi a home maker, the Maitys have a seven
month old baby boy Dev.
An Eye for Perfection

For Kranti Sarkar, Construction Manager (Civil),
Hot Strip Mill, its been a switching of roles from
a consultant to an executor. After having gained
valuable experience as a consultant, KS, a Diploma
holder in Civil Engineering, joined ECC in 1995.
His first posting was at RIL Hazira phase II which
was followed by subsequent assignments at Haldia
Petrochemicals, IOCL Barauni, NALCO Damanjodi
and LBC Shella Bazar. Among the projects handled,
KS views LBC as one of the toughest projects due
to the topography and the nature of work. KS states
that he was the first person to report at LBC for
survey work through the thick jungles and saw
through the critical part of the project under trying
conditions.
At Bhushan Steel, KS, civil in-charge of Hot Strip
Mill, views the works as a tough proposition in terms
of accuracy, construction methodology and time
frame set by the customer and highlights completing
more than 3,50,000 cu.m. concreting as a major
achievement.
KS is a good photographer and always carries his
camera to shoot work progress as well as nature. He
states that he has around 500 images of the long
belt conveyor passing through some of thickest flora
and fauna. Wife Sampa is a housewife and the couple has two daughters Alimpana and Sulagna, studying in class XI
and VIII respectively.

Training on Safety in Advanced Plant & Machinery Operations

Mechanization and usage of modern construction equipment has increased rapidly in the construction industry.
Activities involving these equipments have also increased the accident potential at projects. In order to ensure safe
operations of these equipments, the Plant & Machinery and HSE Departments have jointly organized a training
program on Safety in advanced Plant
& Machinery operations. This
program is intended to impart
technical and safety knowledge to
both the P&M and HSE In-charges.
Active participation was brought out
during the program through
brainstorming sessions and a group
exercise on reviewing the adequacy
of existing systems so as to evolve
additional control measures by
defining the roles. The first program
was organized at Chennai Cluster
Office on 26.09.08. Similar training
programs are planned at other
clusters too.

The event was inaugurated by

took part in the Heritage Walk
around Fort St. George on August
17, 2008.

Crafting Masterpieces
Mr. R. Natarajakumar (RN), hailing from Virudhunagar
district in Tamil Nadu belongs to a family of carpenters
and naturally took to wood crafting from his early days.
Having inherited his craftsmanship skills from his father,
RN got an opportunity to further enhance his knowledge
when he joined L&Ts Construction Skills Training Institute
(CSTI) in Chennai.
An alumnus of the 66th batch of formwork carpentry from
CSTI, RN, apart from his work, crafts creative models and
masterpieces. RN is seen with his wood carving of our cofounder Mr. Henning Holck-Larsen. Upon seeing this
fantastic work, he was asked to make a carving of
Mr. A.M. Naik, our Chairman and Managing Director,
which was presented to AMN during a function in Chennai.

Courting Twin Success On and Off the Court

Nishkamya, daughter of Mr.V.S. Ramana, Head - Corporate
Communications, became the first ever throwball player
in Tamil Nadu to get a free medical seat (at Coimbatore
Medical College) for achievements in throwball.
A student of Hindu Senior Secondary School,
Indira Nagar, Nishkamya secured 91 per cent
in her CBSE Std. XII board exams and had
a cut-off of 181/200. She was selected in the
sports category for MBBS under the
Directorate of Medical Education, Tamil
Nadu.
A promising player Nishkamya was drawn
to the game when she was in class
seven. Encouraged by her school coach
Mr. A. Prabahar, she went on to represent
the State. A key player in the team, the 18year-old is feared in the throw ball fraternity for her smashes
and services.
Nishkamya was part of the Tamil Nadu team that won the
28th and 29th National Throwball Championships. She
won the Best Player Award at the first South Zone
Throwball Championship held at Perinthalamana, Kerala.
She was part of the winning team at the Bharathiyar Day
Sports Meet organized by the Sports Development Authoriy

of Tamil Nadu. Her team has also won several other national
and district-level tournaments.
Nishkamya says she owes her success to her
parents, her throwball coach, Prabahar, Mr.
Balavinayakam, Secretary, T.N. Throwball
Association, Dr. Sylendra Babu, IPS, who
was a great support, her Principal Mrs.
Padmini Sriraman and her Vice-Principal,
Mr. Kasi Viswanathan.
However the game never interfered with her
academics. When not hurling the ball in
court, she chased her dream to become a
forensic scientist.
Nishkamya says, I have always wanted to
be one, from the time I got hooked to watching medical
detective stories on Discovery Channel. An all-rounder in
the true sense, she also enjoys a game of basketball, tennis,
and badminton, not to mention shot-put and javelin too.
Nishkamya, the grand-niece of the great artist-musician
S. Rajam and the veena-legend S. Balachander, is trained in
Hindustani music. She also loves to paint.
Sports Day for Children at Parbati

Parbati Ladies Club organized Sports Day for children
on October 4, 2008 at their staff colony. The event drew
active participation from the wards of ECC-ites and the
participants were vociferously cheered by the members
of the Ladies Club.
Nine categories of competition were organized for the
athletics. The event was compered by Mrs. Malathi
Baburaj, ably assisted by Mrs. Kiran Sharma and Mrs.
Manju Saraswat. Prizes were distributed to the winners
and refreshments given to all the participants. It was a
thoroughly enjoyable sporting day for everyone.

The coming together of veterans is a unique event at

ECC HQ, Chennai, bringing along nostalgic memories
and interesting vignettes from the past. September 12,
2008, was such a day when ECC Recreation Club, HQ,
Chennai, hosted the Veterans Reunion, epitomizing the
awe, respect and affection that ECC-ites have for their
retired colleagues.
Mr. B. Ramakrishnan, Vice-President of the Club
welcomed the days guests of honour and their spouses.
In his welcome
address he said
that the event is
special to all ECCites, who would
be
recalling
w o n d e r f u l
moments
and
experiences they
had
with
the
veterans. He thanked
Mr. K.G. Hariharan
who was instrumental in initiating the event
and generating funds for having the get-together
during his captaincy of the Club.
Mr. K.V. Rangaswami, President of the Club,
welcomed the gathering and said that it was an apt
occasion to reminisce about the past and honour the
veterans. He cited the practice of the US Army where
retired people are called annually and the event celebrated
with great fervour. Hailing Mr. C.R. Ramakrishnan as
Bishma Pithamahar, KVR said that the Company has
grown because of the strong foundation laid by the
veterans through excellent values, training and building
relationships.
Mr. K.G. Hariharan, past Vice President of the Club,
tracing the genesis of the reunion said that it was while
attending a similar get-together at TISCO and ITC that
he felt the need for such a function at ECC. During his
tenure as the vice-president, KGH made an initiative
towards the veterans reunion and the Club donated a
small amount and it was decided to celebrate Veterans

Day. Highlighting the importance of the event,

KGH said it was thought apt to fix a particular
day that would enable everybody to remember the
veterans reunion.
Among the retired veterans who had gathered
were Mr. C.R. Ramakrishnan, Dr. A. Ramakrishna,
Mr. A.K. Mukherjee, Mr. P.G. Ramakrishnan,
Mr. M. Subramanian
(MSR) and a host of
other past masters
whose names always
ring a bell among
present-day ECC-ites.
Many of us had the
great opportunity to
meet and hear the
masters of the past,
who shared their
experiences.
Mr. C.R. Ramakrishnan (CRR), former
Managing Director, took us down the memory lane sharing his experience of having directly worked under Mr.
Larsen and Mr. Toubro. He said Mr. Toubro was like a
school teacher and a hard worker. Mr. Larsen of course
was a great visionary who would not go into much of
the detail like Mr. Toubro but by and large was a great
man in his own sense.
Mr. A.K. Mukerjee, former General Manager, said that
he never knew that an occasion could be so pleasant. He
specially mentioned about Mr. C.R. Ramakrishnans
contribution to ECC. He said CRR is a great disciplinarian and his sense of etiquette is a role model for
others. Speaking about Dr. A. Ramakrishna he said we
cannot a find a person

who is so perfect in
every aspect. He wished
ECC-ites
further
growth and prosperity
in the years ahead.

said that even after retirement he was associated with many organizations but could not
find a organization such
as ECC that it is not
a company but an institution. He attributed
the success of the
organization to the
strong foundation laid
by the leaders such as
CRR and AR.

Mr. M. Subramanian said he had the privilege of going

through 4 generations of ECC. Paying special tributes to
Mr. P.H. Mortenson, MSR said, if not for him ECC
would not have been what it is today, he created the
structure and the predominance of civil engineering in
ECC. The organization grew up because of the
decisiveness and they were not controlled by precedents.
The challenges, innovation, experiment, spirit of adventure
are the things which took ECC forward. Mr.
C.R.Ramakrishan saw to it that leaders were nurtured to
take over the mantle from the seniors. Speaking on AR,
he said that Dr. A. Ramakrishna has the divine qualities
of Rama and Krishna, never
harsh and always smiling.

ECC Recreation Club HQ, Chennai,
went on a pleasure trip to Kolkata,
Gangtok and Darjeeling during
October 8-13, 2008. The Chennai/
Kolkata/Chennai sector was covered by
air and the Kolkata/Darjeeling/
Gangtok/ Kolkata sector by surface
transport.
Kolkata is full of grandeur and fiesta
during the pooja celebrations and for
the picnickers it was a perfect start, to
be amidst the festive ambience. They
were witness to the famous pandals
erected for the Durga pooja. For many
it was a first time experience. This was
followed by visits to the Birla
Mandir, Sisters of Charity (Home of
Mother Theresa). The highlight of the
evening was dinner and entertainment
arranged by our colleagues of Kolkata
Region, thanks to Mr. Azhaguvel, Mr.
Lehari, Mr. B.S. Dubay and Mr. A.K.
Dutta.
Gangtok, the next destination, is

located in the Shivalik hills of the
eastern Himalayan range at an altitude
of 4715 ft. We visited some of the
oldest Buddhist monasteries. The visit
to Tsangu lake was a breath taking
experience which was followed by an
exciting trip to Baba Harbajan Mandir
situated at a height of 14200 ft. It
was great fun for many of us who
indulged in Yak rides. The Teesta river
which runs alongside for the major
part of the journey beautifully carves
out the Himalayan range and is a sight
to behold.

Himalayan Zoological Park. The visit
to the park was an enthralling and
educative experience. We were able to
see endangered alpine species, Swiss
red panda, snow leopard, mountain
goat and the Siberian tiger. This was
followed by visits to two museums
the mountain museum and the Everest
museum. We also visited Ghoom
Monastery which is believed to have
been built in 1875. Some of us also
had an unexpected opportunity to visit
Port Blair as our flight was routed via
Port Blair to Chennai.
The next destination was Darjeeling

which is a Himalayan resort
commanding majestic views of Mount
Everest and Kanchenjunga. Tiger hills,
13 km from town, is synonymous with
Darjeeling at 8482 ft. It affords a
breath
taking
view
of
the
Kanchenjunga at sunrise and we were
told that, on a clear day, one can see
Mount Everest. Darjeeling is home to
Inspite of encountering unexpected

transport delays and even train
derailment, one cannot but agree that
though the tour was a tough one, it
was worth undertaking. The Teesta
river trip, Baba Mandir visit, view of
Kanchenjunga, Tsangu lake, early
morning sunrise at Tiger Hills a
once-in-a-life-time experience, that one
cannot forget.

GET Orientation Programme
Around 364 Graduate Engineers in Civil,
Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics &
Communication, Instrumentation and
Computer Science disciplines from reputed
engineering colleges all over India joined the
Company at HQ-Chennai during July, 2008.
The new recruits were inducted into L&T in
2 batches and 2 Orientation Programmes were
organized for them at Convention Centre,
Chennai during July 1- 4, 2008 and July 14-17,
2008 respectively. On the evening of June 30
and July 13th, an interactive session, facilitated
by Mr. T.K. Premkumar, Manager (Personnel) was organised
to create a sense of bonding amongst them.
KVR inaugurated the orientation programmes and
addressed the engineers in the presence of senior executives
of ECCD. Welcoming them into the L&T fold, KVR spoke
on the history, growth, operations and financial status of
L&T and its Operating Companies with particular reference
to ECC During the four-day programme, ECCs top
management interacted with the engineers and familiarized

them with ECC Divisions business operations and service
units.
The programmes concluded with a de-briefing by P&OD,
followed by a panel discussion. The new inductees were
informed of their postings across the country and the
arrangements made for them to travel to their destinations.

PGET Orientation Programme

Exclusive orientation programme is
being held for the Post Graduate
Engineer Trainees (PGETs) who join
EDRC every year. For the current year
the programme was held during
August 04 - September 20, 2008 with
KVR inaugurating the programme.
The participants, around 120 in
number, included some GETs of 2008
batch and other new entrants into
EDRC.
The programme was organized in 2
modules. Module 1 gave an overall
perspective of EDRC operations
through presentations by group heads
followed by technical sessions on Competency Cells and behavioural sessions. The module concluded on August 7th with
a session on HR functions by P&OD. Module 2 involved training the participants on ISO and in-house design package
used in EDRC. It also included a departmental module in the respective departments, at the end of which the participants
made a presentation to the EDRC department heads on the mock job assignments taken up by them.
Graduate Commercial Trainee Meet

A three day induction programme exclusively designed for GCTs was organized at Mortensen block HQ from August
25-27, 2008. For the first time GCTs were recruited through campus interviews in all Regions and inducted for an
orientation programme at HQ. This is the 16th batch of GCT recruitment for the Division. BR inaugurated the meet
and stressed the need for job rotation within the department for all the trainees. MSS welcomed all the participants and

As a part of HHL centenary celebrations all the trainees had visited HHL centre and had the opportunity of paying
homage to the founder of our organization. In house faculties from all Regions shared their experience in the organization
and handled sessions on General Administration, Site Accounts, Stores and materials management, Time keeping and
Industrial relations, Cema and EIP systems etc.
The three day programme was concluded with Vote of thanks by AMD. After completion of the three day programme
all the trainees were sent to their respective work locations.

Mr. V.B. Gadgil and Mr. K.P. Raghavan emphasized the importance of testing and evaluation of concrete and informed
all the nominated staff to go in to the details on procedures given by ASTM standards. They wished all the staff to get
certified as qualified concrete field testing personal.
The certification programme included a detailed briefing of seven ASTM standards related to concrete field testing by
Dr. Luke M. Snell, followed by a demonstration of the test methods to all the participants. It also included a written
exam and practical test of all the procedures as per the requirement of ASTM by individual participants. The programme
concluded with a ACI hat handing over ceremony and Mr. John Conn informed that all the staff have successfully
completed the certification program on concrete field testing and congratulated all the participants. Subsequently, ACI
USA has issued certificates and the same is valid till 2013.

Mr. A.M. Naik (AMN) addressed the gathering,

appreciating the work done by PRAYAS and congratulated
the members for carrying out the good activities for more
than a decade. He also expressed his happiness over
PRAYAS branching out to various regions and wanted
more young blood to be part of PRAYAS Family for
reaching out in a greater measure to the poor and needy.
He lauded PRAYAS for taking the lead in the Companys
Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. AMN granted
a generous amount for carrying out the various activities
with more enthusiasm and vigour. With the branching out
of PRAYAS and the integration of the ladies club of L&T
all over India taking priority, guidelines are being prepared
for this purpose. A few meetings between Mr. Bansal and
PRAYAS office-bearers have paved the way for a smooth
integration process.
A cross-section of the audience
Mr. Y.M. Deosthalee delivered the keynote address. He

commended PRAYAS and all the ladies for staying together
and carrying out exceptional work. He also urged the
members to reach out to the downtrodden and needy. He
advised PRAYAS members to have a vision and mission
statement, which will help in clearly identifying and
establishing goals and moving forward towards achieving
these objectives.
Dr. A. Ramakrishna in his address said that PRAYAS was
very special to him and that he would like to be present
every year for the Annual Day Celebrations. He said that

he had been at Puttaparthi and had sought Sri Sai Babas
blessings for the Annual Day Celebrations.
Mr. A.M. Naik presented the PRAYAS scholarships to
outstanding students from among the employees children.
Proceedings completed, it was time for some entertainment
through solo and group dance programmes presented by
the members. The function culminated with a delectable
dinner.

orphanage houses about 100 PRAYAS members seen with the Inmates of the Dazzling Stones Home for children
children and 18 staff. PRAYAS
is arranging for their monthly list of groceries for a period of one year. Ten thousand rupees has been sanctioned by
PRAYAS Trust, Chennai for this noble cause.

On July 18, 2008, PRAYAS Trust Bangalore conducted an eye camp in its Regional Office for all its employees (contract,
temporary and permanent) which was followed by a session on Eye care by Dr. Y.L. Rajashekar of Shekar Nethralaya,
a super speciality hospital located in South Bangalore.

Timely help for inmates of Vastrapur region
On August 29, 2008, PRAYAS members visited
one of the slum areas of Vastrapur and donated
plastic sheets, candles and mosquito repellants to
the inhabitants. The members also interacted with
the slum dwellers and counselled them on
prevention from water-borne diseases like diarrhea,
typhoid, etc, as well as cleanliness of the
surroundings, health and hygiene.

Distribution of School Uniforms to Deaf and

Dumb Students of Muk-Badhir Vidhyalaya,
Ahmedabad
On August 20, 2008, as part of CSR activities,
ABRO donated 110 school uniforms to the
students of KS Dedhiya Muk-Badhir
Vidhyamandir Deaf and Dumb school. The school
established 20 years ago by Mrs. Kolilaben G.
Shah (Director) and Mr. Gunvantbhai Shah
(Secretary) with very modest infrastructure, is now
improved very much through the monetary help
of several industrial houses and land given by the
Government of Gujarat. Highly impressed by the
sincerity and dedication of the founders, the
ABRO staff decided to donate the uniforms as
part of CSR initiative. The uniforms were
distributed during a function at the school
premises on August 20, 2008.

Timely Help for Bereaved Staffs Family

Mr. Kanak Sarma, Construction Manager (Civil)
and In-charge of RMC-Guwahati was suffering
from cancer and expired on June 19, 2008 leaving
behind his aged mother, wife Mrs. Subhanti Devi
and two children a son aged 7 years and
daughter aged about 4 years; both of whom are
clinically ill. The son, Raktim is abnormal and
virtually disabled and is unable to walk, talk or
hear; while the daughter Priyansu is 40% disabled
and though she can speak a few words and can
walk, she is having a weak heart due to thyroid
problem and has been diagnosed with Downs
Syndrome.
Mrs. Subhanti Devi, the widow is not employed
and therefore does not have any regular means of
income. Keeping in view this most unfortunate
situation, ECC Recreation Club, Kolkata sought
voluntary contribution from its members as well
as from the staff members of various sites under
Kolkata/Eastern Region to which there was an
extremely encouraging response.

A One-day Outing for Children of Sachinand Swarup Ashram

As a part of the endeavour by the Techno-Park
Chapter of Prayas-Ahmedabad to bring cheer and
happiness into the lives of the future generation of
India, a picnic and city tour was organized for the
sishyas of the Sachinand Swarup Ashram on the
September 27, 2008. The gleeful expressions seen on
every face were a clear indication of how excited they
felt at the proposal of a day long outing. It was a rare
opportunity for these bundles of joy as most students
of the ashram mainly hail from the remote tribal areas
of Gujarat. Most of the children had infact never ever
had a tour of the city.
The day began with the excited children taking a short
bus ride to the Sayaji Park, which houses the zoological
garden and an extensive museum and picture gallery.
The rich collection of animals ranging from tigers,
lions, deers, birds, etc. thrilled all.
The Sayaji Rao Museum and picture gallery which houses valuable artifacts from almost all cultures of the world
immensely impressed the children. Be it the mummified body in the Egyptian section, the iron armours worn by
soldiers in the Indian section, the daintily painted crockery of the Chinese and Japanese section or the bronze
jewellery in the Tibetan and Nepal section, the sparkle in the eyes of the children said it all. The visit to the picture
gallery was an altogether different experience for the children who have only been exposed to the Indian style of
painting. Indeed a day of enjoyment and learning.
