examination format and regulations

The examinations will consist of images drawn from the covered material for that
examination. For each shown image, an answer will consist of, written on separate
lines: the artist (if known); the title; the place if given on the study sheets (this will
be for buildings, and works attached to buildings or connected with a site); and the
specific culture (not the numerical date). All this information will be provided on the
study sheets for each segment of the course and the answers must conform to the
study sheets. Each image will also have a short question to be answered, derived
from the material in the lectures. Some questions will have only one answer; others
will have several possible correct answers. Each part of the identification and the
short answer will receive one point.
In order to ensure that all students are given the same opportunity to demonstrate
knowledge of the required material, the following rules will apply to the exams. Any
violation will result in that students examination being disqualified and an F being
recorded.
1. An examination booklet (blue book) is required. Nothing (including random
sketches, drawings, lists, etc.) may be written in the booklet except the answers.
Anything in addition to the required answers will result in an F being recorded for the
exam.
2. pens only (no pencils or erasable pens).
3. Writing must be legible: print if necessary. Answers that cannot be read (by me)
receive no credit. Do not write over an answer to change it: cross it out and re-write
it entirely. In particular, please print your name.
4. The answers to the questions require no more than a word or phrase. Do not
give multiple answers. This tactic provides no advantage, but does increase the
chances of being wrong. Multiple answers will receive no credit.
5. Spelling is important. All names, titles, places, cultural dates and terminology
marked on the study sheets in bold face will be spelled with no more than one letter
incorrect (according to how they appear on the study sheets) in order to get credit.
An extra credit of point will be applied to each of the bold face terms or names
which are spelled exactly correctly.
6. Apart from the examination booklet and the pen, nothing can be on the table.
7. From the beginning of the exam until all the exams are collected there will be no
talking and students will remain in their seats. Any talking, standing up, or putting
anything on the tables before all the exams are collected will result in collection of
the exams from the student(s) involved, and an F will be assigned. This includes
the person being talked to: if you do not wish to trust the people on either side of
you, move before the beginning of the exam, or indicate to me that you want to
move your seat.
8. No telephones, music players, or any other electronic devices are allowed in the

classroom during exams. Anyone receiving a telephone call, or whose phone, pager,
etc., goes off, or who consults the device during an exam will receive and F for the
exam.
9. At the conclusion of the exam, you will be asked to pass your answer sheets to the
aisle. Anyone not passing the exam in when they are called for will receive an F for
the exam. That is, no exams will be accepted after I collect them.
10. Do not assume that you automatically qualify for a make-up examination. For
non-emergency reasons, permission needs to be obtained at least one week before
the examination in question. For medical emergencies, I must be notified by email
within 24 hours of the examination. If a make-up examination is justified, it will be
scheduled according to time and room availability. There will only be one make-up,
and it is the students responsibility to arrange all other plans to meet that schedule.
