Configuring QSIG over ISDN-PRI Trunks between Avaya

Communication Manager and Nortel Meridian - Issue 1.0

Abstract
These Application Notes describe how to configure QSIG supplementary services between
Avaya Communication Manager and Nortel Meridian. The focus is on the configuration for
QSIG supplementary services features such as path replacement, call diversion, calling number
and calling name. The sample configuration consists of an ISDN PRI interface connecting an
Avaya S8700 Media Server with G600 Media Gateway and Nortel Meridian Option 11c Mini.

1. Introduction
The International Standards Organization created QSIG protocol to allow the rich features of
telephony services from disparate PBX vendors to coexist in heterogeneous voice networks. A
description of Avaya QSIG is accessible from the URL listed in the reference section. These
Application Notes will describe the configuration of the path replacement, call diversion, calling
name and calling number of QSIG supplementary services between an Avaya S8700 and Nortel
Meridian switches. A separate document describes the configuration of centralized messaging
between an Avaya S8700 and a Nortel Meridian using the QSIG MWI supplementary service.
Figure 1 illustrates a voice network consisting of Avaya S8700 Media Servers with an Avaya
G600 Media Gateway and a Nortel Meridian 1 Option 11C Mini. The Avaya S8700 Media
Server and Nortel Meridian are connected via a T-1 PRI QSIG trunk. Local extensions for the
Avaya S8700 Media Server are of the form 2XXXX. Local extensions for the Nortel Meridian
are of the form 45XXX. These two servers have a dialing plan that allows subscribers to call
each other using five digit dialing. This configuration used a five digit dialing plan; other dialing
plans are acceptable.

12. Verification Steps

Verification involves several tests to verify the QSIG integration between the Avaya S8700 and
Nortel Meridian.

Verify that the Meridian D-Channel is in Operation as described in Step 10.7

Verify that Avaya T-1 trunk group indicates in-service/idle by entering status
trunk # at the command prompt of the Avaya Communication Manager. The
trunk # is assigned in Step 5.4.
Make a call from an Avaya station to a Nortel station. From the Nortel station
transfer the call back to another station on the Avaya side and hang up the Nortel
station. Verify from the Avaya server that the trunk between Avaya and Nortel is
idle for all channels. This verifies the path replacement configuration.
Make a call from an Avaya station to a Nortel station. Verify that the calling
name and number of the Avaya station appear on the Nortel station, and called
number and called name of the Nortel station appear on the Avaya station.

13. Conclusion
These Application Notes describe a verified sample configuration of QSIG supplementary
services such as path replacement and call diversion between Avaya Communication Manager
and Nortel Meridian.
