4. Micrometer:-

Prepared by: MR L.S RAMLUGON

To measure external diameters of wire or thickness of material to an

accuracy of
0.01 mm

5. Vernier caliper: To measure large external and internal diameters over a wider range than
is possible with a micrometer to an accuracy of 0.02 or 0.05 mm
depending on models.

2.5

List different types of Hammers and state the specific use of each.

Prepared by: MR L.S RAMLUGON

Hand hammers are tools, which are used to strike, shape, adjust, assemble and
remove work pieces, tools, parts and components. Also for flattening cold rivets.

10. Crimping tool:-

14

Prepared by: MR L.S RAMLUGON

To crimp various types and sizes of terminal lugs onto wire ends

2.7

State the importance of using properly insulated hand tools.

Hand tools by electricians need an additional safeguard against electric shock.
Hence they need to be provided with insulated handles made of high quality
plastic or rubber. Screwdrivers for electrical work often have insulated blades in
the form of plastic sleeves fitted up to the tip of the blades.

2.8

List the procedure for maintaining hand tools properly according

to manufacturers instruction.
 Always wear appropriate protective equipment.
Keep a first aid kit on hand.
Never use tools other than the purpose that they are intended for, or use the right
tool for the right job.
Do not use (cutting) tools until you are trained in its proper and safe use.
Keep your tools properly cleaned and lubricated.
Replace tools which are worn or damaged
Keep tools and equipment in racks or on the worktable when not in use.
Do not carry sharp tools in your pocket
Do not cut towards yourself when using cutting tools.
Never throw tools at your workmates.
 Do not abuse your tools.
Keep cutting tools sharp as dull blade requires excessive force, can slip and
cause accidents.

2.9

State the importance of regularly inspecting hand tools for:

Signs of wear

Repair

Damage

Regular inspecting of hand tools are done so as to replace tools which are worn
or damaged and most significantly to avoid accidents and injuries with regards to
safety.
2.10

List the elements to be checked on a power tools prior to safe use:

Frayed or damaged flexible cords

Integrity of appliance connector or plug tops

Screws

Cord grips

Integrity of casings

Missing parts

Damaged components

Lubrication

2.11 List the criteria to be considered for selecting the proper type of
power tools used for drilling or cutting:

Material to be cut or drilled

Size of material to be cut or drilled

Nature of work

Environment where the task is to be carried out.

2.12

State the need for using:

isolating transformer:- to protect people and equipment from many unwanted
conditions such as :- surges, voltage irregularities, feedback, harmonic currents,
ghost currents, static charges, etc.

residual current devices:- One of the means of protection in the case of fault in
low voltage systems is automatic disconnection of supply. Automatic
disconnection of supply is required where a risk of harmful pathophysiological
effects on humans can arise, resulting from dangerous touch voltage. In order to

16

Prepared by: MR L.S RAMLUGON

fulfil this requirement, residual current devices (RCDs) are used as protective
devices.
2.13

State the importance of keeping power tools in good operating condition:

Cleaned

Oiled

Properly stored

For safety reasons so as to avoid accidents and injuries at work.
