A History of Harvesting Excellence

Advancing the science of forage harvesting

technology

SPFH
INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE GUIDE

More than 40 years ago, the rst John Deere forage harvesting machine rolled off the assembly line in Ottumwa, Iowa. The Model 34 Pull-Type
Forage Harvester answered customer needs for simple, efcient and highly productive forage chopping.
Since then, John Deere has introduced renements and generations of new machines that have advanced the art and science of forage
harvesting. In 1992, forage harvesting production was moved to the John Deere Combine Works in Zweibrucken, Germany a move that put
John Deere engineering and manufacturing closer to its key European forage harvester markets.

Cleaning and Inspection

Feed roll area

Clean and inspect the feed rolls and the right

hand feed roll drive gearbox. Remove crop
residue build-up from around the feedroll shafts.
Clean the area around the header drive gearbox
and lift arms. Inspect the gearbox shafts for
excessive play and replace worn gears and
bearings with Genuine John Deere parts.

Carefully inspect the feedrolls. Check the slats

on the lower and upper feedrolls for excessive
wear or damage. Replace as necessary with
Genuine John Deere stainless steel feedrolls.
These rolls feature a special weld and demagnetized stainless steel that provide optimum
performance for the John Deere IntelliGuard
metal detection system.

Smooth roll scraper

Thoroughly clean the smooth roll, scraper and

the area between the scraper and stationary
knife. This will ensure smooth, uninterrupted
crop ow next season.

Knife grinder housing area

Proper clearance between the smooth roll and

scraper ensures smooth crop ow and
reduces residue build-up. Determine the
narrowest point and set the clearance to 0.2
mm (0.008 in) . The smooth roll should turn
freely. To adjust, loosen the four screws as
shown and adjust the scraper evenly across
the face of the roll.

Take time NOW to go over your machines

Its the best investment you can make
Ensure a trouble free season now with another intelligent solution. Over the past decade SPFH design has made signicant
progress delivering in excess of 600 hp and providing high levels of
performance. As a consequence, the demand on the machine and
the individual internal components and parts has increased enormously.

Blow out and clean debris and dust from the

knife grinder housing. Its also important to
clean this area frequently during the season. It
must be cleaned before sharpening the cutterhead knives to prevent re.

Remove hardened crop residue with a powered

grinder or steel brush to prevent the corrosive
effects of plant residue.

Doing preventative maintenance ensures your machine will be in

peak condition right from the start when next harvest rolls around.
Reduce downtime
Increase machine performance
Enhance the value of your SPFH

Accelerator band area

Drive sheaves

Having the last successful season still in mind, timely inspection and
preventative maintenance are critical to prevent down time and
costly in season repairs.
Dont forget downtime during harvest can have a measurable impact
on your bottom line.
Clean and inspect the area around the accelerator and accelerator band, as well as the area
over the ground drive transmission. Inspect the
right hand accelerator bearing supports. Replace
any of the bolts or braces that are damaged or
bent.

Pay close attention to the accelerator band. If

discoloured, as shown in this photo, adjust the
accelerator paddles. Please refer to the operators manual for complete instructions.

Clean and inspect all drive sheaves, belts and

chains. Lubricate all grease nipples. Check the
bearings and replace as necessary with
Genuine John Deere parts.

Cleaning and Inspection

For top quality forage, it pays to keep the kernel

processor in top condition

Kernel processor
A

Remove the kernel processor from the machine

and clean thoroughly to remove debris and
residue.

Use a wire brush as necessary to scrub plant

residue from the saw-tooth rolls. Inspect cutting
edges for any dents or damage. If damage is
evident, John Deere recommends replacement
with genuine John Deere-quality rolls for best
performance. John Deere saw-tooth rolls are preassembled to ensure proper t and balance. Apply
a thin layer of grease over each roll before storing
the kernel processor over the winter.

Check the belt guard (A) for cracks or other

damage. Inspect the idler bearings (B) for wear
and replace as necessary with genuine John
Deere parts. When replacing bearings, ensure
bearing bolts (C) are torqued to
90 110 Nm (66 81 lb./ft).

During the season, crop residue can accumulate between the kernel processor and the cutterhead. John Deere recommends cleaning and inspecting this area frequently. Ensure this area is free of debris before sharpening
the knives.

The kernel processor on a John Deere Forage Harvester has earned a reputation for high capacity processing even in the toughest crops. It is
designed to provide a long period of dependable performance but there are special maintenance steps that you can take now to ensure reliable
performance for the upcoming season.

Cab maintenance
A clean cab can show your commitment to quality and your operations professionalism. It can also
preserve resale value so important
to todays top forage contractors.
Thats why it pays to clean your cab
completely before storing your
machine for the winter. Clean the
seats, wipe the console and corner
displays and for the nishing touch,
use John Deere window cleaner for
windows and mirrors. Your operators
and your customers will appreciate your attention to detail.

Unloading spout
After 300, 400 or even 500 hours of harvesting this past season, imagine
the tons of crop that have passed through the unloading spout. Good
reasons to give this area a careful winter clean and inspection. For better
inspection of rotation mechanism and transition chute remove the spout and
check for excessive play. Lubricate as indicated by the Operators Manual.
Check the wear plates and replace with John Deere parts as necessary.
Also, dont forget to clean and inspect the spout.

Inspect the cab air lter and housing. Use compressed air to clean the lter, as well as inside the
housing.

Engine, Hydraulic System Cleaning, Inspection, Maintenance

Original John Deere Lubricants
Plus-50 engine oil was developed exclusively for engines that
work under heavy, continuous loads. It reduces harmful engine
deposits that can cause extreme engine wear and loss of power.
And Plus-50 oil simply lasts longer. When used with a John Deere
lter in a John Deere engine, drain intervals may increase by
50%. That means less oil, fewer lters and reduced downtime
(check your operators manual for details).
Torq-Gard Supreme engine oil has a broad range of performance characteristics that make it suitable for hot or cold weather.

Cutterhead Knives Installation and Adjustment

Step 3
Install shearbar. Install the Teon strip, stationary knife and
Teon pads. When turning or changing the stationary knife,
always replace the Teon strip never reuse worn strips.
When installing bolts, use medium strength thread locker
(John Deere PM37418) and refer to the Operators Manual for
proper torque measurements.
Teon strip (1 Part) = p/n Z49449

Step 4
Install two reference knives. Install a reference knife on the
left and right hand sides of the cutterhead. Knives should be
adjusted to lightly touch the rod. When mounting angled corn
knives, rotate the drum manually and ensure that both ends
of the knife contact the rod.

Quality cutting starts with proper knife installation and

adjustment. This step-by-step guide shows you how.
Your John Deere forage harvester is designed to deliver season-after-season of high quality forage the kind of quality that todays livestock
producers require. Proper installation and adjustment of cutterhead knives plays a critical role in the cutting performance of your John Deere
self-propelled forage harvester. Follow the step-by-step process provided here and youll experience increased service life of wear parts,
decreased grinding cycles and optimum cutting performance.

14

Step 5
Prepare the sharpening stone. Use the sharpening stone for
precise adjustment. To move the stone manually over the
complete cutterhead, loosen the stone drive cable.
Important: Before loosening, be sure to mark the cable to
easily identify the end position (see photo). For 6050 machines (Serial Number 504992 and higher) and 7000 Series
forage harvesters, the side sharpening system is used but
please follow the same procedure specied here.

Step 1

Step 6

General preparation. Carefully clean the cover plates. The

knife bed must be clean to allow precise knife adjustment and
to ensure correct clamping forces. Knife bolts should be
checked for wear and replaced if necessary.

Align knives with the sharpening stone. After disconnecting

the drive from the stone, raise or lower the motor until light
contact is made with the rst reference knife. Then, move the
stone to the opposite side of the cutterhead. (The stone
should have the same amount of contact with this knife.) If
this is not the case, the sharpening housing should be reset to
parallel (refer to the Operators Manual for instructions). Once
the knives have been aligned, reinstall the stone drives.

Step 2

Step 7

Clean shearbar and inspect adjusting mechanism. Clean

the shearbar with abrasive paper and inspect the adjusting
mechanism for wear. Worn parts increase stationary knife
clearance and should be replaced to ensure precise adjustment.

Adjust the shearbar. Remove the adjusting motor and adjust

the stationary knife manually with a socket wrench. The
stationary knife should lightly contact the knives.

15

Cutterhead Knives Installation and Adjustment

Step 8

Step 12

Adjust and repair reference knives. Important: During initial

installation, align the reference knives to the shearbar. Knives
may touch the shearbar on the outer corners or in the centre
of the knife. Proper knife alignment from left to right will
reduce initial grinding cycles, resulting in longer wear life.

Sharpen knives and adjust the shearbar. Grinding is critical to

maintaining optimum cutting performance. This photo (right)
shows an angled knife after only a few sharpening cycles.
Depending on the model year of the machine, a minimum of
three to six sharpening cycles may be enough to create a
sharp cutting edge. After grinding, adjust the shearbar to the
knives.

Knives touch shearbar in the centre.

Knives touch shearbar on the outer corners.

Choose the knife combination matched to your specic harvesting needs

The unique design of the John Deere cutterhead provides you with outstanding wide knife combination exibility. Knives and shearbars can
be combined in a wide variety of positions, allowing you to match crop types, soil conditions and required cutting quality. The following chart
provides more information about the various knife patterns.

Shearbar

Step 9
Install remaining knives. Install remaining knives and
handtighten the bolts. Align the knives to the shearbar (see
Step 8). Grinding cycles will be reduced when the knives are
properly aligned.

Your customers put big demands on your harvesting operation.

And you demand the highest level of performance from your
John Deere forage harvester. There is simply no room for compromise. And thats why day in and day out it pays to choose original
John Deere parts for your John Deere forage harvester.

The real difference

So, take a closer look and learn about the vast differences between
John Deere original-equipment parts and all the others. Discover why
it pays to invest in Genuine John Deereparts. Real differences. Real
Value.

John Deere parts are designed by John Deere engineers specically

for John Deere equipment. So every part no matter where its manufactured is made to original equipment specications. And that
means theyll meet critical machine performance requirements
and they last longer. Many tests and inspections have shown that
look-alike parts rarely meet original John Deere specs.

The real difference

The Genuine John Deere saw-tooth kernel processor roll comes preassembled, so theres no need to manually install individual parts which
can lead to an unbalanced roll and premature wear. Unlike look-alike
rolls, the John Deere saw-tooth roll comes balanced, making installation
more convenient. Runout is true. Whats more, pre-assembled
John Deere rolls are resistant to moisture penetration that can lead to
an unbalanced roll.

Take a closer look

Like many John Deere wear parts, the kernel processor roll is induction
hardened, rather than ame hardened like some look-alike parts suppliers. Induction hardening provides much more consistent hardening, for
longer life. The dark tooth proles in this illustration show the precise
zone hardening of the Genuine John Deere roll.

Unlike other forage harvester designs, the upper feedroll on the John Deere machine offers
replaceable wear bars. So if you damage a bar, you can replace individual bars rather than
replacing the entire roll. Plus, the wear bars can be reversed doubling the wear life. This can add
up to a signicant saving over the life of your machine. Plus, these bars are specically designed
for high wear conditions that you nd in high yield maize and sandy soils. Choose serrated or
smooth bars to match crop conditions.

The real difference

Both Genuine John Deere and look-alike upper feedrolls are made from stainless steel.
But thats where the similarities end. Some look-alike manufacturers use a lower grade
stainless steel that is not fully demagnetized. And this can cause the metal to false trip
and lead to premature wear. Genuine John Deere feedrolls are made from a special
wear-resistant, fully demagnetized stainless steel including the wear bars and all hardware.

Genuine John Deere shearbars
Of all the components on your John Deere forage harvester, the shearbars or stationary knives play a critical important role in providing high capacity, high quality forage harvesting. Together with the knives, they provide the two-edge precision cutting essential for a high
quality cut and high quality forage. Although simple in appearance, the shearbar features a complex geometry designed by
John Deere engineers to meet specic performance characteristics. And while low-cost look-alikes might appeal to your wallet, lower
quality shearbars may cost you more in the long run.

Yes you say but the other grass shearbars are

cheaper. But ask yourself, how much extra fuel is that
cheaper shearbar costing your operation? If you
harvest grass for 200 hours a season the fuel
savings will pay for the Genuine John Deere shearbar
over and over. Whats more, the test also showed that
the non genuine shearbar required twice as many
sharpening cycles as the John Deere shearbar. Double
the grinding cycles double the cost in time.

D Pore-free coating eliminates the risk of aking.
E Manufactured from ultra-low-impurity, high-tensile steel.
F 2 mm pre-tension for vibration-free installation.

Now lets look at maize shearbars. We tested a John Deere maize shearbar against two look-alike shearbars on a customers John Deere forage
harvester. We ran all three bars in identical conditions and heres what we found:

B
C
A

E
D
F

There are higher demands on grass shearbars than on a maize shearbars. Since
grass is picked up from the ground, there is inevitable contamination by stones and
soil which are very abrasive to the cutting edge. Over time the edge-radius becomes
rounded. This larger radius requires more horsepower, increases fuel consumption
and reduces knife wear life. In fact, a large radius can increase fuel consumption
from 2 to 3 litres per hour. John Deere shearbars are designed to maintain a specic
radius, providing a good balance between useful service life, cutting performance
and fuel consumption.

Shearbar A: After 178 hectares, the cutting edge

has already become rounded. Clearly, theres no
self-sharpening effect like you have with a
John Deere shearbar.

Shearbar B: After just 60 hectares, this

look-alike shearbar is completely rounded,
making it virtually unsuitable for corn. Coating
quality was clearly very low.

Genuine John Deere Shearbar C: After 800 hectares the cutting edge is in excellent condition. The self-sharpening effect and coating
quality provided up to nearly ten times the life of
the look-alike shearbars.

The real difference

Other shearbar manufacturers claim high quality but this test proves the superior performance and value. Imagine the savings youll experience in your
operation: better cutting quality of the genuine John Deere shearbars, lower fuel consumption and costs, lower knife wear and replacement costs. Thats
the real difference and the real value.

Genuine John Deere

John Deere offers nine different types of shearbars designed to meet your specic harvesting applications. So whether you need a at, raised, grass,
maize, universal, standard or heavy duty shearbar for your 6000 or 7000 Series, each is manufactured to meet the highest John Deere specications for
outstanding quality, performance and value.

53 hours Grass
The real difference
We welded a John Deere grass shearbar to a look-alike shearbar with a triangular inlay. We then installed the shearbar on a John Deere forage
harvester and ran it in very abrasive grass chopping conditions for a total of 53 hours. The result?
Check out the look-alike shearbar on the left. After only 53 hours, it has a 3 mm round radius. And since theres no self-sharping effect as on a
John Deere shearbar, the radius will continue to become even larger draining horsepower and fuel.
Now look at the John Deere grass shearbar on the right. The radius is only 1.25 mm! And thanks to the self-sharpening effect of the John Deere design
it will stay sharp!

John Deere cutterhead knives

The Multi Knife Drum a Safety System

John Deere drum in stony conditions the safety system works: the knife on the left hit a stone and moved
back by 8 mm to avoid severe damage. The only parts that suffer in this case is the knife, the cover plate and the
bolts.

The cutterhead plays a critical role in the forage harvester performance. And thats why its so important to choose John Deere knives knives that t, perform and last. John Deere cutterhead knives meet
these requirements and are manufactured specically for your John Deere forage harvester.

The real difference

The retraction system on your John Deere SPFH is a vital safety system. The multiple knife drum might require a little more maintenance but we use small
knives on four rows for exibility and safety reasons. Especially in stoney conditions this feature can turn out to be an intelligent investment.
The smaller the knife, the more likely it will move back correctly when impacted by a foreign object. Wider knives as used on some other SPFH makes
are more likely to cause damage in the same situation. On two-row drums, the knife tends to turn and get in contact with the shearbar, while on one-row
drums, knife parts might break out completely and cause serious damage.
Sometimes even in the eld you can see a knife that moved back. In such a situation the only thing you have to do is readjust it (or change it in case of
damage).
To ensure that this safety system works correctly it is vital:
to x the knives with the correct torque (as indicated in owners manual )
to clean the cutterhead properly for every knife replacement
to use genuine bolts, knives and cover plates featuring the correct coefcients of friction (ie correct material and surface nish)

Quick lesson in knife coatings

Genuine John Deere knives feature a tough tungsten carbide coating for high quality cutting, longer wear life and lower engine power demands.
Knives stay sharp longer, reducing sharpening intervals, fuel consumption and maintenance costs.
Inferior coatings result in low quality cutting performance, shorter wear life and increased engine power demands. Knives dull quickly, increasing
sharpening intervals signicantly. These illustrations show the superior hardfacing qualities of Genuine John Deere knives.

Dacromet cutterhead knife bolt

Genuine John Deere cutter knife bolts are Dacromet coated. Dacromet is an alloy containing zinc,
aluminum and chrome. Dacromet coating provides:
Added bolt strength (because theres no hydrogen brittleness)
Superior corrosion protection
Optimum adjustment of the required clamping force
Controlled movement of the knife when the knife impacts a foreign object

Standardised look-alike bolt

(12.9 property class):
shorn off as the result of hydrogen brittleness.
Z69650 Knife bolt 60X0, 70X0 Series SPFH

The real difference

Look-alike parts suppliers often sell 12.9 zinc galvanized bolts that are not Dacromet coated. They
argue that harder is better. However, this is not the case.
During the galvanizing process, hydrogen penetrates the bolt and weakens it. The higher the property
class, the higher the effects of the hydrogen brittleness, increasing the likelihood of bolt shearing.

The real difference

At a glance, most knives look very similar. But a closer look shows wide differences
in coating quality. The John Deere knife on the left features hardfacing bonded to
the knife body.

Genuine John Deere cover plates

A Genuine John Deere Knife is 3/4 worn, but coating remains intact
B Look-alike Bonding failures cause coating to ake
C Look-alike Premature wear due to low carbide content

Although it might be considered a simple, uncomplicated part, a knife cover plate features special design characteristics that fulll specic functions.
It must hold the knife securely while chopping, while also allowing the controlled retraction of the knife in case of impact with stones or other foreign
objects.
Thats why John Deere plates are made to careful specications rened over years of eld tests. Because of the impact risk, they must provide high
strength to resist breaking. And because the cover plate functions much like a disc spring, all edges must clamp the knife when the attachment bolts are
torqued. This is why precise steel quality is so important.

Sharpening stones
Think all sharpening stones are the same? Think again.
Only the John Deere stone provides the properties that
meet original equipment specications for coarseness and
bonding.

A fracture test was

performed to verify
bonding strength.

John Deere stone after

fracture test breaking
strength of 49 kN.

Look-alike stone fell

out after 47 cutterhead
hours.

Look-alike stone after

fracture test breaking
strength of 23.5 kN.

Quality varies greatly among look-alike cover

plates. For example, the plate above becomes
convex when torqued. The outer areas dont
secure the knife. Thus, the knife can rotate
around the centre bolt and make contact with
the shearbar which can lead to major failure.

Also see how this cover plate compares to

the Genuine John Deere plate. Notice that the
look-alike plate (upper) is too convex and does
not provide adequate clamping. The John Deere
plate (lower) provides 100% contact with the
surface.

Notice how improper steel rolling during manufacturing results in the grain running in the
wrong direction. This, along with lack of proper
sandblasting, enhances the risk of breakage.

The real difference

John Deere performed fracture tests on several look-alike stones. The look-alike stones withstood only half the force of the John Deere stone.
Inconsistent glueing and ne grain caused the failure. We also tested stones in the eld. In one case, the bonding failed after only 47 cutterhead hours.
(Imagine the problems that can cause when youre rushing to complete a job before it rains!).

DuraLine Grass Knife

You asked for it we developed it. Introducing the DuraLine Grass Knife. This new knife features a tungsten carbide coating which is 5 mm longer than
on our standard knives (15 + 5 mm), as well as a longer body. A longer knife means that when half worn it can be pulled out to the original drum
diameter when the shearbar passage travel limit is reached or the crop transport function starts to suffer. That makes the DuraLine grass knife ideal for
abrasive conditions. In soft conditions this knife can be used for two seasons.

Speed Changes
The conditions out in the eld may make demands to change the differential speed of the cutter drum, the accelerator and/or the kernel processor. Here
is a brief overview of the parts necessary to carry out the conversion for the 7250 7550 Series.

Increase your cutterhead speed to 1150 rpm. With an

accelerator speed of 1800 rpm this adjustment allows
you to save fuel by carrying out chopping with a lower
engine speed. In addition, the increase in the cutterhead
speed can help to prevent plugging when working in
maize. The change in cutterhead speed is achieved by
changing the accelerator and cutter drum pulleys and
belts. For 72X0, 73X0, 74X0 Series.

Chopping grass into consistently short lengths (< 2.5 cm) makes it easy
to compact. Good compaction is vital in the silage process, helping to
reduce the risk of mould, one of the biggest causes of lost silage. And
the short cut makes the silage easy to feed out. So when it comes to
planning your silage operation, count on your John Deere forage harvester to make your work easier and more protable by providing you
with the short, very precise silage material.

Blower Adjustment Toll

To ensure top performance, it is essential that the accelrator is adjusted
with the greatest care and precision. If the gap between the paddle and
accelerator band is too large the machine performance suffers signicantly. Adjusting the paddles is simple and straightforward with the use
of the John Deere adjustment tool. It features a thickness of 1mm so an
exact installation is possible. All you need to do is to fold it according to
the accelerator bands curve. Then loosen the paddle bolts and let the
paddles fall down onto the tool. Afterwards tighten the bolts again to 215
Nm (159 lb ft).
With their tungsten carbide coating for longstanding performance, John
Deere paddles are tough and can be readjusted as often as is needed.
