What things about Australia are interesting to know?

Nowadays, Australia has a mix of cultures from all over the world, from the Indigenous
people to migrants from about 200 countries. Over 200 different languages and dialects
are spoken in Australia, including 45 Indigenous languages. The most common nonEnglish languages spoken there are Italian, Greek, Cantonese, Arabic, Vietnamese and
Mandarin.

Australia is one of the worlds biggest wine-producing countries. Some of the worlds
oldest wines can be found there, and this country has more than 60 regions that produce
them.

Australia is one of the worlds most efficient agricultural nations. It produces high-quality
vegetables, fruit and grains. It also produces meat, poultry, seafood, and cheeses and
other dairy products. Furthermore, many new industries have been established to
accommodate the growing Australian taste for exotic foods, including Asian greens,
nashi pears, lychees, olives and herbs.

There are some australian restaurants where you can find kangaroo, buffalo, crocodile
and emu on its menu, which it is not common to see in other countries.

Each autumn, Australians celebrate the Melbourne International Flower and Garden
Show. It is a festival of colour and floral design at the World Heritage-listed Royal
Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens. The festival showcases the creativity of
Australia's top floral and landscape designers delivered in stunning displays. There is
also great food and entertainment for the whole family.

This country is also known because of its fashion festivals. The city of Melbourne is
usually called as Australias fashion and shopping capital. Also, every March and

August, there is a fashion week in Sydney where celebrities can see the seasonal trends
and the latest creations from their favourite Australian designers.

Australias unique animals always attract tourists, and many zoos in Australia are known
as the worlds best ones. Australia has public and private zoos. Some Australian zoos
have exotic species such as big cats and elephants, while others focus on Australian
native animals and birds.

Zoos and wildlife sanctuaries in Australia give vital environmental education and
research for the conservation of endangered animals. In lots of zoos in Australia, people
can see many amazing animals like koalas, kangaroos and wombats.

Australia is the only continent without an active volcano.

The Chinese New Year is very important in Australia. It is celebrated by the Chinese
Australian families, because of the Australias long Chinese cultural heritage.

It is estimated that before the British settlement there was about 300,000 Aboriginal
people who spoke around 250 languages.

British settlers arrived in 11 ships at Port Jackson on the 26th January 1788 (now
Australia Day).

The number of convicts transported to Australia in 806 ships was about 162000 people.

Most of the convicts sent to Australia were from England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland
but some were sent from other British colonies like Canada and India, while others came
from New Zealand, Hong Kong, the Caribbean and other countries.

Many soldiers were also transported here for crimes like mutiny and desertion.
