2GR-FSE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM

Engine Control System Description
This engine uses a Toyota Computer Controlled System (TCCS), which comprehensively controls the following systems in a highly accu-

EG

rate manner: Sequential Multiport Fuel Injection (SFI), Electronic Spark Advance (ESA), Electronic Throttle Control System-intelligent
(ETCS-i), and Dual Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (Dual VVT-i). As a result, high performance, high power output, fuel economy, and
improved exhaust emission performance have been achieved.
A new D-4S (Direct injection 4-stroke gasoline engine Superior version) system with a direct injection fuel injection system and a port
injection system is used. In this system, the ECM effects centralized control on the direct injection fuel injectors and the port injection fuel
injectors to achieve an optimal state of combustion that suits the driving conditions, in order to realize fuel economy, exhaust emission
performance improvement, and a high power output in the practical range.
This system provides diagnosis and failsafe functions for serviceability and safety.

D-4S SFI (Sequential Multiport Fuel Injection) System

This system uses an airflow meter to detect the intake air volume in order to control the fuel injection volume.
To achieve an optimal state of combustion in accordance with the engine speed and load data provided by the signals from various sensors,
the ECM controls the injection volume and injection timing of the fuel injectors for both direct injection and port injection.
To accelerate the warming up of the catalysts when the engine is started cold, the system effects lean-burn control through stratified combustion.

Weak Stratification Combustion

Immediately after a cold engine is started, the port injection fuel injectors spray fuel between the expansion and intake strokes. Then,
during the latter half of the compression stroke, the direct injection fuel injectors spray fuel to stratify the mixture (with an air-fuel ratio
ranging from 15:1 to 16:1). This enables the engine to significantly retard its ignition timing. As a result, the exhaust gas temperature
rises, accelerating the warming up of the catalysts, and dramatically improving exhaust gas emission performance when the engine is
cold.

Homogeneous Combustion
To achieve an optimal state of combustion, the system uses both or either of the two types of fuel injectors for port injection and direct
injection, respectively. The port injection fuel injectors spray fuel between the expansion and intake strokes, while the direct injection
fuel injectors spray fuel during the first half of the intake stroke. This produces a homogenous mixture. In addition, the heat of evaporation of the injected fuel cools the compressed air, which improves charging efficiency and increases power output.
