I love the Bibleand I wrestle with it. There are parts, if Im honest, that I have questions about.
There are statements on its pages that I dont believe capture the character and the will of God.
Pastor Adam Hamilton, author of Making Sense of the Bible.

How Do We Make Sense of the Bible?

I hear all the time from people who say that they dont read their Bible because they dont know how to
understand it in light of our everyday life. Why do the four Gospels not agree on details of Jesus story? Why
does the God we see in Jesus not match the other pictures of God that we find in Scripture? Can I believe in
science and evolution and the Bible? What about dinosaurs? Were Adam and Eve real people? Is it okay to get
a tattoo, according to the Bible? Does the Bible really say women shouldnt speak in church?
This past summer when we gathered together to talk about homosexuality and the church, many people had
questions about homosexuality and what the Bible says. Many seemed ready to learn about what the Bible
says about homosexuality and why people interpret those verses differently.
Many of us have great respect for the Bible and think it is really important, but most of us dont read it. I think
most of us dont read it because we dont know how to make sense of it. So, lets gather together this January
and February to see if we all can grow in our understanding of Scripture and how to read it. To do this, we will
do a book study using Making Sense of the Bible, by Adam Hamilton. We will have a six-session study on the
following topics:
Session 1: Making Sense of the Old Testament
Session 2: Making Sense of the New Testament
Session 3: Questions about the Nature of Scripture
Session 4: The Bible and Science
Session 5: Violence, Suffering, and Other Troubling Issues
Session 6: Wrestling with Issues of Sexuality and Relationships
Each week, there will be assigned chapter readings. There are two opportunities to attend this book study:

Please sign-up at church for this study and to purchase a book. Cost of the book is $17. Or you can also
purchase an e-book version on your own for about $11. I know this is pricey, but I dont want the cost of the
book to prevent anyone from coming to this study. If the cost of the book is too much, please let me know and
we will figure something out.

Peace and love,

Pastor Jon

going to be talking with other companies. Pastor Jon will be talking to someone to come and look at it.
We are going to add a Report of Total Giving and Attendance to the bulletin every other week. This is to help keep the congregation
informed about where our offering money goes and where the needs of the church are financially.
