My Lordswood Journey

Leo - Head Boy

Studying business, sociology, performing arts and sports studies
I came to this sixth form not only because I was following in the footsteps of
my sister, but also because of the endless opportunities with which it would
provide me and the support given by friendly, approachable teachers.
The best thing about this sixth form is the balance between the academic and
social aspects. This includes the excellent quality of teaching, a wide variety
of subjects and the opportunities to develop friendships and bonds with new
people.
Although Im heavily involved in sports and drama, Lordswood Sixth Form
Centre has helped me to discover my enthusiasm for business, which I now
hope to study at university.

Priya - Head girl

Studying applied science, art, mathematics and religious studies
I really enjoyed my time at Lordswood Girls School from Year 7 to Year
11 and I didnt want to move to a new college or sixth form because I had
become used to life at Lordswood. I enjoyed the teaching and loved the
friends that I had made. I was comfortable at Lordswood and knew that I
would feel the same way when attending Lordswood Sixth Form Centre.
The best thing about Lordswood is the fact that you can feel secure and
confident when talking to your teachers. The sixth form team makes you
feel at home and you know that whatever you need help with, the teachers
and support staff are there for you. The relationships that you create with
your teachers are priceless and I feel that you wouldnt be able to get this
anywhere else.
Once I have completed my post 16 studies, I hope to go to university to
study psychology.

An Enriching Partnership

We aim to offer you much more than a set of academic qualifications. We

want you to extend your passion for your studies beyond the classroom
walls and want you to embark on new adventures. So if you are an aspiring
singer or performer we have our school productions or gospel choir and, if
you are a committed fundraiser, there is the sixth form organised talent show
or charity challenge day.

Our Sixth Form Partnership with The UCC in Ghana

18 years ago Billa started a very basic school under a mango tree in LaBadi,
Ghana, encouraging children to study in return for the chance to play
football. One mans vision has led to a school catering to almost 200 pupils
from the most disadvantaged backgrounds. These students are taught, fed,
nurtured, loved and financially supported through to secondary education
and beyond. Billa, a football fanatic, also runs several football teams with
some young players now getting the opportunity to play abroad.
This is Ado, a student at the Underprivileged Childrens Centre (Future
Leaders) in Ghana. He is an unforgettable, joyful young boy but because he
has specific learning needs it has been difficult for him to be accepted into
one of the local government schools. For many students like Ado attending
a free government school is also unaffordable after paying for the uniforms,
the books, and food.

Ado

It really is a once
in a lifetime
experience
which reminds
us how lucky
we are to have
such easy
access to
education.

Lordswood Sixth Form students have proudly supported the development

of the UCC Ghana through fundraising activities and by sponsoring children
at the school. Each year a group of our students also have the unique
opportunity to spend a month teaching in Ghana, immersed in the local
culture.

A Sporting Partnership

Did you know that Lordswood was one of the first schools nationally to
support the idea of having a sports academy?
A unique opportunity is offered at Lordswood Sixth Form Centre to excel in
sporting practice combined with academic study. With the building of a new
sports facility and an all weather pitch we will be fully equipped to help you
to achieve your sporting ambitions.
The Sports Academies have been massively successful in motivating
students because you are coached like aspiring professionals and expected
to apply this professionalism to all aspects of your sixth form life.

Football Academy
Romulus Football Academy has been running professional football training
for 16-19 year olds for over ten years. Lordswood Sixth Form Centre is
now in partnership with Romulus to develop this quality football provision
alongside academic studies.
As a football academy student you will:
Train at least three times a week after school
Compete in matches on Wednesday afternoons both home and away
Have the opportunity to play in the semi-professional league at the
weekend
Former Romulus students have received professional contracts at Notts
County, Aston Villa, Everton and Motherwell to name but a few, and exEngland star Darius Vassell once scored 46 goals in a season for his
Romulus team.
If you have a passion for football but understand the importance of
maintaining your commitment to your academic studies, the Football
Academy could be for you. Romulus will run trial events throughout the year.

Lordswood Basketball & Cricket Academies

Lordswood runs its own Basketball and Cricket Academies which are open
to all students, male or female, regardless of ability, prior experience, or
academic subjects studied. The emphasis is on personalised improvement
and acquiring a professional sporting attitude.
As a basketball or cricket academy student you can:
Develop your sporting practice alongside other like minded students
Gain a qualification in coaching, table officiating, or refereeing
Take part in competitive matches in the region
Coach younger students
Be supported by Warwickshire County Cricket and Basketball England
Enhance your physical and mental well-being
I have been able to coach younger students to help
them enjoy the sport as much as I do.

Course Explanations &

new GCSE grades
Advanced Level 3 Courses
The level 3 qualifications offered at Lordswood Sixth Form Centre include
Advanced Levels (A levels) and vocational courses including BTECs and
Cambridge Technicals.
You can follow traditional pathways and opt to study three or four A levels.
These courses run over two years and are assessed through a combination
of coursework and examinations at the end of the second year.
Level 3 vocational courses are equivalent to A levels and have been
developed to help you learn in a practical way about a specific job area.
The courses come in different sizes; the extended certificates are equivalent
to one A level and can be studied alongside other vocational qualifications
and/or A levels. The extended diploma is equivalent to three A levels and is
offered as a whole package along with work placement. A large component
of the vocational courses is internally assessed, alongside some external
assessment.

Level 2 Courses
Level 2 vocational courses are equivalent to GCSEs. They are two year
courses that provide an alternative to GCSEs and can lead to further training,
employment or progression on to level 3 studies.

biology
A Level

progression

Biologists are scientists who study the natural

world and all the living things in it, from the largest
mammals down to our very own microscopic DNA.
They try to understand how animals and organisms
work (including us humans), how we evolved and the
things that can make us sick or improve our health.
As with the other sciences, biology helps you to
build up research, problem solving, organisation and
analytical skills. If you study biology, you will likely
find yourself working on group projects, which will
help you develop your teamwork and communication
skills too.

Biology is a key subject for

lots of careers, particularly
in healthcare, medicine
and jobs involving plants
or animals. The list is very
long and includes nursing,
dentistry, forensic science,
psychology, physiotherapy,
botany, environmental
science, zoology,
geology, oceanography,
pharmaceuticals, energy,
teaching, science writing,
genetics and research.

areas of study
The main areas of study are biology and disease,
the variety of living organisms, populations and
environment and control in cells and organisms. The
practical assignments set throughout the course allow
you to investigate different areas of biology.

20
LSFC prospectus 2017.indd 22

Biology opens up exciting

career possibilities. From
conservation to cancer
research, biologists are
tackling important 21st
century challenges, and we
need skilled young people
to be part of this. It is also
important to remember
that biology is excellent
preparation for non-scientific
careers, thanks to the skills
it provides everything from
analytical thinking to writing
reports.

business
A Level

progression

The ever changing climate of the business world is

fascinating. The impact of the external environment
on organisations, and how they react, illustrates how
successful managers/CEOs can be. The influence of
finance on business organisations and how money is
managed makes the business world a very competitive
place. By studying business you could end up being
part of a global company helping to provide the best
possible service to clients using problem solving,
communication and team working skills.

Business is a platform
to apply for many related
degree courses including
business and management,
marketing, accountancy,
economics and IT based
degrees. Studying business
can support you when
applying to work or study
abroad, study international
relations or for combined
degrees in international
relations and languages.

areas of study
A level business focuses on the four functional
areas of operations, finance, human resources
and marketing. Students will become aware of the
importance of aims, objectives and strategy at a
corporate and functional level. Students will also
become aware of political, legal, ethical, social,
environmental and technological issues affecting
business decisions.

Alternatively students can

find paid employment in
organisations such as KPMG
or apply for apprenticeships
including business
administration.

areas of study
The BTEC business specification allows students
to focus on why businesses exist, the importance
of stakeholders and understanding the aims and
objectives of different business organisations.
Students will investigate how companies and business
organisations are financed, the importance of
marketing and the role that recruitment and selection
plays in making a business successful.

chemistry
A Level

progression

Chemists get to ask some great questions, from If

I set this on fire, what will happen? to If I combine
these elements together in the right way can I create
something totally new? And its all part of the job.

Chemistry is an important
subject for careers in
medicine, environmental
science, engineering,
toxicology, developing
consumer products,
metallurgy (studying how
metals behave), space
exploration, developing
perfumes and cosmetics,
pharmaceuticals, energy,
teaching, science writing,
software development and
research.

Chemists conduct experiments to study how elements

work in different conditions, test how they mix and
work out what they are made up of. The results can be
ground breaking, colourful, explosive or impossible to
see. Chemists use their experiments and knowledge to
develop medicines, foods, fabrics and other materials,
from neon lights to shatter-proof glass.
They also use it to understand the world around
us, from why leaves change colour to discovering
invisible pollutants in the air. Just breathe in and out
and youre performing a chemical reaction, which is a
little scary, but pretty great too
Chemistry is sometimes known as the central science
because it helps to connect physical sciences, like
maths and physics, with applied sciences, like
biology, medicine and engineering.

areas of study
The topics you will cover include atomic structure,
periodicity, organic chemistry, kinetics, alkenes,
analytical techniques, equilibria, polymers,
thermodynamics, energetics and inorganic chemistry.

A Level

progression

A level computer science is, above all else, relevant to

the modern and changing world of computing.

A Level computing could

lead you into a career as a
business analyst, database
administrator, systems
developer or teacher, the
list is endless. Even if
computing isnt your goal,
this subject offers a wide
range of skills that are
sought after in many other
professions looking for
creativity, problem solving
and innovation.

This course will enable you to apply theory topics

learned in the classroom to real-world scenarios. It
is a creative subject where you will need to merge
your own ideas by solving problems and designing
your own systems. This course will give you the best
possible start for those of you that are looking to go
on to study computer science at a higher level as well
as other subject areas that are looking for analytical
skills.

areas of study
Computer science consists of three components,
two of which are externally marked. You will develop
your ability to analyse problems in computational
terms through practical experience, including writing
programs. You will start to develop the capacity
to see relationships between different aspects of
computer science.

Physics
A Level

progression

Physicists look for all the hidden laws that explain

why all matter (thats every physical thing) and energy
in the known universe exists, where it comes from and
how it behaves the way it does. So if youre wondering
how forces of nature, like gravity, work or how aircraft
stay up in the air, youll need to go to a physicist like
Brian Cox, Stephen Hawking or Albert Einstein for an
explanation. Physicists use the laws they uncover to
develop new materials, machinery and technology to
improve our lives and help us explore the universe
further, from computers to telescopes and spacecraft.

Physics is an extremely
useful subject for the
majority of STEM (science,
technology, engineering, &
maths) careers and youll
find physicists everywhere,
in industry, transport,
government, universities,
the armed forces, the secret
service, games companies,
research labs and more.

Physics will help you to build up your problem

solving, research and analytical skills. With these
skills youll be able to test out new ideas as well as
question and investigate other peoples theories,
which is useful for any kind of job that involves
research or debate.

opportunity to learn about the science behind human
behaviour and how laws about human behaviour
can be developed. You will then go on to explore the
many different strands of psychology and you will
also consider issues and debates that psychologists
consider when attempting to explain human
behaviour.

Many of our students go

on to study psychology or
psychology related degrees
at university. There are
also many careers that link
to psychology, including
teaching, law, criminology
and counselling.

areas of study
