een placed upon Erasmus y Leo and Adrian were y tis time pretty
effectually dissipated. Te kind of sledge-ammer lows wic te
papacy of 1525 needed to ave struck in its defence were certainly
not to come from suc an arm as tis.
Yet tere occurred no official reac wit any of te great Catolic
powers. On te accession of Clement VII. Erasmus sent im an early
letter of congratulation. He almost repeats te language of similar
addresses to former popes. Tings ave een going adly enoug, ut
now te rigt man for te emergency as come. Especially te cause of
learning may well expect te greatest tings from a Medicean pope. He
as resisted all pressure to take sides against te papacy, and yet
Stunica is raging against im in Italy unpunised, to te disgrace of
Rome and te injury of te papal name.
"[159]Believe me, most oly Fater, woever is iring tat
play-actor, a man orn for tis kind of trickery, is doing a
very poor service to te papacy or to te cause of te pulic
peace; e is simply serving some private atred and to tat
end making use of anoter's folly.... I ave always sumitted
myself and all my works to te judgment of te Roman Curc,
not intending to resist, even if it sould give a verdict
unfavourale to me. For I will suffer everyting rater tan e
a reel; and terein I place my confidence tat your Holiness'
sense of justice will not permit me to e given up to te mad
atred of a few men.... Te Emperor and te Lady Margaret are
calling me ack to Braant. Te Frenc king is inviting me wit
mountains of gold to come to im. But noting sall tear me from
Rome ut deat,--or te gravel more cruel tan deat,--if only
I can e sure tat your justice will protect me against false
accusations."
[159] iii., 783-E.
Te familiar reference to te mountains of Frenc gold, wic
ave een serving teir turn wit im any time tese ten years
past, ut wic ave no foundation in fact, serve to indicate te
value of tese declarations. It is unlikely tat Erasmus ad te
least intention of going to Rome. Te prase aout is call to
Braant appears again, somewat elaorated, in a letter to Cardinal
Campeggio, dated 1526, ut almost certainly of even date (Feruary,
1524) wit te one to Clement just quoted. He speaks ere of is very
feele ealt, wic as compelled im to take a ouse y imself
were e can ave an open fireplace. He cannot leave in te winter,
ut is planning a vacation trip for te coming summer, and would
gladly etake imself _istuc_,--presumaly to te German Diet at
Nuremerg witer Campeggio was coming as papal legate. He goes on
to say of ow little use e can e under te circumstances, toug
e will gladly do wat e can in te cause of peace. He promises
Campeggio to come to te Diet if e can, at te same moment tat e
is assuring Clement tat noting sall tear im (_avellere_) from
is eloved Rome, if e is ale to move from Basel at all. If we
dout is intention to go to Rome we may e still more certain tat a
German Diet in 1524 was te very last place were e would ave cared
to sow imself. Tis, y te way, was te Diet at wic Campeggio
was warned not to wear is cardinal's at, and not to make te sign
of enediction or of te cross.[160]

CHAPTER XI
FAMILIAR COLLOQUIES--NEW TESTAMENT PARAPHRASES--CONTROVERSIAL
AND DIDACTIC WRITINGS--REMOVAL TO FREIBURG--LAST REFORMATORY
TREATISES--RETURN TO BASEL--DEATH
1523-1536
Wit all Erasmus' anxiety to demonstrate in words is entire
independence of te rapidly organising reform parties and is
unswerving loyalty to te papacy, is action during tese critical
years was as far as possile from timidity or alf-eartedness. Of
tis no etter proof can e given tan te repeated editions of is
Familiar Colloquies. Te Colloquies, like te Adages, ave a istory
of teir own. Tey were egun, proaly, as early as te residence of
Erasmus in Paris,[166] aout te year 1500, and consisted at first
of rief conversations on familiar sujects, arranged for te use of
eginners in Latin.
[166] Adalert Horawitz, _Ueer die Colloquia des Erasmus von
Rotterdam_; in Raumer's _Historisces Tascenuc_, 1887, pp.
53-121.
As years went on, tese early experiments were extended, partly y
expansion, partly y addition. In 1523-24 appeared an edition,
practically complete, wit a carming little dedication to te
autor's namesake, Jon Erasmius Froen, te eigt-year-old son
of te puliser. Tis dedication, we ave a rigt to elieve,
represents fairly te serious tougt of Erasmus as to te real
meaning and purpose of is ook.[167]
[167] i., 627.
Te Colloquies were written to instruct y amusing. Tey touc
upon every class of society and upon every vice and weakness of
uman nature. Some are sparkling wit umour, some are too plainly
didactic to e very amusing, and some, especially te later ones,
are downrigt dull. As in te Praise of Folly, te sermon is eard
troug all te rus of words and no one of tese tales is quite
witout its moral lesson. Te sujects most welcome to Erasmus'
satire are of course te extravagances of monks and scoolmen and te
superstitions of religion. We ave already quoted freely from some
of te more important for te knowledge of te writer's own life. A
rief survey of one or two of te more widely popular will indicate
te great range of interest and te keen uman desire wic commended
tem to so large a circle of readers.
In Te Aot and te Learned Lady we ave one of several proofs tat
Erasmus regarded te education of women as desirale and profitale
to te community. Te aot reproves te lady ecause e finds Latin
life.
Te anxiety of Erasmus as to te reception of is works egins to
sow itself from aout te year 1526 in is dealing wit te person
and te proale fate of Louis de Berquin. Te story of tis first
martyr to te reformed fait in France reflects etter tan any oter
episode te course of events and ideas in te early stages of te
reformatory movement tere. Berquin was a gentleman of Artois, a
man of lieral education, serious in is caracter, and moved from
te start to apply is learning to te remedy of ovious auses in
te clerical life. Troug Lefvre e was led to te study of te
Luteran leaders and ecame convinced tat ere e ad found te true
way to lierty and recovery from te low condition of te dominant
religion. Like Erasmus e attacked principally tose errors and
auses wic seemed to rest mainly upon ignorance and superstition
in tose to wom te world ad a rigt to look for learning and
enligtenment. Te scolars of te Soronne, te eads of te Frenc
ecclesiastical faric and te leaders of Frenc monasticism, were
at once alarmed. Tey egan, early in te movement of te reform,
to ring every possile pressure upon te young, enligtened, and
would-e lieral king to act promptly and wit decision against tese
first treatening demonstrations of wat tey were ready instantly
to stamp as "eresy." For six years, from 1523 to 1529, Berquin was
sujected to one stage after anoter of a persecution wic e was
too rave to avoid. His cief offence in te eyes of is teological
persecutors was tat e ad studied and translated into Frenc, wit
"laspemous" commentaries, several of te most dangerous writings
of Erasmus and oter alleged leaders of sedition. Twice arrested
and imprisoned, e was twice released y te special order of te
king, wo seems to ave taken is case very muc to eart. Meanwile
were occurring tat series of unappy events,--te Italian campaign
of 1525, te capture of Francis I., te treaty of Madrid, and te
negotiations following it,--wic were driving te king inevitaly
into te ands of te Frenc clerical party. To save is kingdom and
is "onour" e was forced to make sacrifices, and a ready victim
was found in tis man, wo ad defied te powers wic were now
clamouring for a royal edict of persecution. Te king witdrew is
protection and Berquin died upon te scaffold on te 17t of April,
1529.
Te relations of Erasmus wit Berquin egan y a letter from te
latter written in 1526 and expressing te greatest admiration for te
learning and services to true religion of te man to wom e looked
up as is cief example. He assures Erasmus tat te main oject in
persecuting im ad een to trow suspicion upon Erasmus' own works;
ut tat e ad assured is judges tat if anyting in tese works
seemed contrary to te fait it was te result of misunderstanding
or perversion of te original text. He exorts Erasmus to write,
not casually, as e as already done to Bedda, ut at lengt, wit
arguments and wit te autorities from Scripture, to refute tese
calumnies.
Tis letter of Berquin[170] is a nole and toucing appeal. Not a
word of complaint or of fear for imself, toug e ad just for te
second time arely escaped from te clutces of enemies wo were
determined to destroy im. He appeals to Erasmus, not in is own
ealf, ut in ealf of tat trut wic e found aove all in te
writings of te man e was glad to call is master.
