The Agency for Development of Aquaculture, Kerala (ADAK) is an autonomous body under
the Government of Kerala registered under the Travancore-Cochin Literary Scientific and Charitable
societies Registration Act 1955 (Act XII of 1955) It was registered on 24.05.1989 with its
headquarters at Thiruvananthapuram. The Regional Offices are at Alappuzha, Ernakulam and
Kozhikkode. The Agency has the mandate to implement various programmes for the promotion of
aquaculture.

III. Services provided:The Agency for Development of Aquaculture Kerala (ADAK) implements various schemes
for the promotion of aquaculture.
1. Integrated Scampi/Fish culture in paddy fields of Kuttanadu - Kuttanadu Package.
ADAK has successfully implemented the scheme in 2000 Ha area of padasekharams
in Alappuzha, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts. The details are as follows:SI No

2. Oru Nellum Oru Meenum under Plan Fund:This project aims the rotation of fish culture with paddy culture. The project area is the
padasekharams of the Kuttanadu area of Alappuzha, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts.
The main objectives of the project are:1. To develop a sustainable aquaculture through rotation of rice/fish farming.
2. To reduce the cost in paddy farming.

3. To increase the productivity of paddy.


4. To strengthen the bunds of padasekharams.
3. Ecofriendly Aquaculture (Oru Nellum Oru Meenum) - RKVY:The padasekharams, polders and paddy fields of Alappuzha district in Kuttanadu region
where only one crop of paddy culture is the prevailing area of this project. ADAK
implemented the scheme in many padasekharams and is successfully going on.
4. Brackish water Aquaculture project:By this project, the waterlogged areas including unutilized paddy fields can be brought into
fish/prawn culture farms. The target area is Alappuzha district. ADAK has been successfully
implementing this scheme since 2008. Now, about 110 Ha. area ha been brought under culture.
5. Mussel farming:The project is proposed to implement Mussel/Oyster/Calm culture in the entire coastal and
backwaters of Kerala. The project aims to restore the livelihood of fisher folk who adversely affected
due to the global economic recession. The major objectives of the proposal are:1. To restore the livelihood of fisherfolk from the impact of global economic
recession.
2. To empower the fisher folk in the costal areas for generating income and
employment.
6. Cage culture of Fin fishes in the backwaters of Kerala:Culture of fin fishes in cages is a latest technology practiced in several countries. The
advantages of this method are higher unit area production, optimum utilization of feed, optimum
survival, easy monitoring of growth and easy harvesting. The main objectives are
1. To increase the aquaculture production of fishes like Karimeen, Tilapia etc.
2. Restoring livelihood of fisherman.
3. To create new employment opportunities of fishermen allied workers, etc.
4. Transfer of technology from research organizations to stakeholders.
5. Make optimum utilization of backwaters of Kerala in an ecofriendly culture
practice.
40 fishermen group conducted fish farming under this scheme. 200 nos of cages (2m x
2m x 1.5m) were installed with 1200 nos of fish seeds in each cage. During harvest an
average of 200 Kg of fish was obtained from a single cage.
