Consolidate All whats the difference?
July 13, 2012
To answer this, we thought we would address each of the three consolidation methods one at a time
(going from most ecient to least ecient):
Consolidate
Only available to parent entities with a status of CN or CN ND
When this method is used on a parent entity, the system performs calculations (Calculate,
Translate, Consolidate) for any dependent entity within the consolidation path of the selected
parent that has a calculation status of Impacted; all other process units are skipped.
Process units with a status of NODATA on the current period and all prior periods are skipped.
Process units with a status of OK or OK SC on the current period are not recalculated, retranslated,
or reconsolidated.
Note: Consolidate is the most ecient option because it will consolidate only what has changed from
the previous execution of consolidation as well as calculating and translating for individual entities that
have an impacted status.
Consolidate All with Data
The Consolidate All with Data option is available for any parent entity regardless of its status.
When you select this option for a parent entity, the system consolidates every dependent entity
within the consolidation path of the selected parent that contains data, regardless of its status.
Process units with a status of NODATA on the current period and all prior periods are skipped.
Process units with a status of OK or OK SC on the current period are recalculated, retranslated,
and reconsolidated.
Note: Consolidate All with data is a li le less ecient than consolidate because it will consolidate
everything whether it changed or not from the previous execution of consolidation but it will skip
entities that no data. This option is useful for updating system status from OK SC to OK after
metadata changes.

Consolidate All
The Consolidate All option is available for any parent entity regardless of its status.
When you select this option for a parent entity, the system performs calculations for every
dependent entity within the consolidation path of the selected parent, regardless of its status.
Process units with a status of NODATA on the current period are calculated, translated, and
consolidated.
Process units with a status of OK or OK SC on the current period are recalculated, translated, and
reconsolidated.
Note: This option will consolidate everything whether changed or not as if it has never run before. It
will also include in execution entities for which there is no data at all and will recalculate already
calculated cells in ones that do have data. This option should be used sparingly because the system

does not omit entities with NODATA, which can have a signicant impact on consolidation
performance.
We have heard comments that some consulting rms tell clients to never consolidate all, we guess
that the reason they do this is related to the processing time that command takes. It put quite a load
on the servers CPUs, and if there are other users in the application while it is running they may
experience signicant delays. Of course it is really up to the client to decide what type of consolidation
task that they want to run you just need to know the impact of your choice.
