WORLD AIDS DAY AWARDEES 2014


Mathilde Krim, PhD: Mathilde Krim, an AIDS researcher dedicated to better understanding the virus
and increasing the publics awareness of AIDS, is the founder of the American Foundation for Aids
Research (amfAR), a non-profit organization that is devoted to laboratory and clinical AIDS research,
AIDS prevention, and the development of sound AIDS-related public policies. In addition to being
amfARs founding chair, Dr. Krim was, from 19902004, the Chairman of the Board. She holds 16
honorary doctorates and has received many other honors and distinctions.
Janet Parker: Janet Parker is a social worker at the Mount Sinai Comprehensive Health ProgramDowntown (MSCHP-Downtown). She has been working on HIV prevention and care for over a decade.
Janet is single-handedly responsible for many successful connections to care, linking to care individuals
newly diagnosed with HIV, those who have fallen out of care, and those at risk. She works directly with
City STD clinics and breaks down all barriers to link patients to services.
Hector Quiones: Hector Quiones has worked in the field of HIV/AIDS for over 17 years. He is
currently the Director of Social Services and Linkage to Care at the After Hours Project. Hectors
responsibilities include supervision of HIV/STI testing, case management, linkage to care, medical
transportation, treatment readiness, syringe exchange, and Hepatitis C screening. Hector is a proven
champion of the community, always bringing the clients perspective into every planning conversation.
Additionally, Hector serves tirelessly on the Brooklyn Knows Steering Committee and subcommittees.
Krishna Stone: Krishna Stone is Assistant Director of Community Relations, Communications & Marketing
at GMHC. Krishna has worked tirelessly at GHMC for over 20 years. She works on press issues and media
campaigns and ensures that GMHCs work is aligned with its mission and directives. Krishna provides key
information regarding HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and advocacy to the public. She is responsible for
translating key messages for the community in a way that all community members will understand.
Positive Life Workshop Peers: The Positive Life Workshop seeks to help NYC residents living with HIV
increase medication adherence and reduce risk behaviors through peer support and health education.
The peers have been an integral part of delivery of the Positive Life Workshop since the fall of 2011.They
teach and motivate people with HIV by sharing their own life stories as examples of overcoming obstacles
and taking important steps to manage their health. This peer model leaves participants feeling
empowered to manage their HIV. Peers include:
