PROCEDURE:

Environmental Condition:

The Test Acceleration area shall be level and track surface shall be dry so
that rolling noise remains low. In the free field there shall not be any
large sound reflecting objects within 50 metres radius of the centre of
acceleration section.

Measurements shall not be made in adverse weather conditions like rain,

storm and heavy winds that affect noise and instruments.

The wind effect should not be greater than 3 m/s.

The variations in free sound field between Sound source at the centre of
the acceleration section and Microphone are within 1 dB (A).

The background noise level shall be at least 10dB(A) below the sound
level produced by the vehicle.

Preparation of Vehicle:

The vehicle shall conform in all its parts, components and systems to the
design and/or Production series as applicable.

The vehicles tyres shall be of the type normally fitted to such vehicles
by the manufacturers. Tyres that have covered only 10% or less of their
expected life shall be fitted on the vehicle. The tyres shall be inflated to
the appropriate pressures for the load condition prescribed for the test
at specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

Before the measurements are obtained, the engine shall be brought to

its normal operating condition with regard to temperatures, settings,
fuel, spark plugs, carburettors etc.

Approach Speed:
As the vehicle under test, Honda Unicorn,is of engine capacity 150cc, as per
standard, the approach speed shall be the lowest of the following:
- 50 Km/hr
- Speed corresponding to an engine rpm equal to 75% of the
engine rpm at which maximum rated power is developed.

- Speed corresponding to an engine rpm equal to 75% of the

maximum engine rpm permitted by the governor.

Selection of Gear Ratios:

As the vehicle under test, Honda Unicorn, is of engine capacity not
exceeding 175cc and gearbox with five gear ratios, as per standard, it shall
be tested only in third gear.

Measurement Procedure:

The position of the microphone is located at a distance of 7.5 + 0.2 m from

the reference line of the track and 1.2 + 0.1 m above the ground.

The approach speed is 50 km/h for the vehicle under test as per the
conditions mentioned in the standard.

The vehicle shall approach the line AA at the steady approach speed with
the third gear engaged. When the front end of the vehicle has reached the
line AA the accelerator control is fully operated and held in that position
until the rear of the vehicle reaches the line BB and then the accelerator
control shall be released as quickly as possible.

In order to take into account the inaccuracies in the measuring instruments,

the result obtained from each measurement is determined by deducting 1
dB (A) from the meter reading.

Logarithmic average of the measurement readings is taken as the final

value.

Background noise = 36.9 dB (A)

Logarithmic average of LHS and RHS readings = 72.18 dB (A)

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:

The pass by noise level for the given vehicle is found to be 68.9 dB (A).
As per the norms for Pass by noise test, it is 77 dB (A) for the two wheeler falling
under the category of 80cc & 175cc. hence the given vehicle meets the Pass by
noise requirements as per IS3028.
