ABSTRACT
The project aims at developing a power line inspection robot to inspect
high voltage overhead power transmission lines. This technology is still not commercial
in India. The electrical inspection is done by ground crew and sometimes by helicopter in
difficult terrain. This kind of robot will avoid temporary interruption of Inspection lines
without affecting the end user and transmission grid. The inspection of transmission line
will become cheaper and safer. Inspection robot will reduce the danger to manual
operator and the need for downtime such as cutting the power to the transmission lines in
order to inspect the line is eliminated.

The robot is expected to cross the transmission tower poles, spacers, bulbs etc.
while performing a continuous inspection of the entire electrical line. The robot will
inspect the mechanical stresses, electrical hotspot in the power line. The robot does the
crossing by manipulating its center of gravity to keep balance as it travels along the line.
Our project mainly focuses on the mechanical design of structure, especially making it
capable for crossing the pole. Control systems for balancing while crossing will be
designed. The Electromagnetic Shielding aspects will be subsequently considered. This
robot will be fitted with GPS technology that allows for tracking and precise
identification of problem spots along the line.
