Crime Data Comparison
In 1929, the International Association of Chiefs of Police composed a methodical strategy
to reporting crime called the Uniform Crime Report (UCR). Soon after, the Federal Bureau of
Investigation (FBI) was tasked with gathering, distributing, and chronicling the statistics. Seven
principle orders were decided to quantify the change of volume and rate of each crime (National
Atlas of the United States, n.d.). These seven classifications, otherwise called the crime index,
are homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, and larceny theft.
An eight index, arson, was added to the report in 1979. With these measurements, authorities can
focus the viability of new laws and programs as well as the adequacy of staff and procedural
changes. This information influences various issues, for example, plan choices, reconciliation of
new laws, and staffing choices. People in general, also search this report for data relating to
change in crime. Others, for example, criminologists, municipal planners, lawmakers, media, and
sociologists utilize the statistics for planning and research. Despite the fact that these reports are
never going to be 100% exact because to the measure of underreported crime all through the
United States, they in general give society a decent feeling of what is occurring different areas.
Underreporting of crime happens on the grounds that law officials do not have the foggiest
idea that the crimes have occurred. The absence of individual engagement and admiration of law
enforcement as an issue assumes a significant part in crimes not getting reported. An alternate
explanation behind crimes not getting reported are individuals prioritizing what is a genuine
crime and what is most certainly not. Some more purposes behind underreporting are fear of law
enforcement, absence of confidence in the police, threatening vibe towards law officials,
humiliation, and conceivable presenting oneself to being included in the crime or criminal
conduct. Community involvement and a higher police vicinity in specific regions is simply a few

ways that law enforcement are attempting to cross over any barrier police involvement and
underreporting of crimes.
In the city of Jacksonville, Florida in 2006 there were a reported 113 murders as indicated
by the UCR. Jacksonville is the largest area region in Florida and it had a populace of around
798,000 in 2006. Six years have passed and the rate for homicide diminished to around 39 in
2012 with its populace expanding to around 836,500 (Jacksonville, FL Profile, 2014). In
examination Atlanta, Georgia in 2006 has a reported 110 homicides when its population was
evaluated 498,000 (United States Census Bureau, n.d.). In the year of 2012 Atlanta has an
expected population of 540,000 and a reported 38 killings (Atlanta, GA Profile, 2014). Both
areas demonstrate a sensational drop in homicide rates have significantly diminished all through
the United States. This drop could be focused around a couple of components, for example, email
and media being a support to society feeling more joined with each another, for a few scholars
accept that its because of the gen X-ers maturing leaving the rate of adolescent grown-ups lower,
and another variable is that almost 2.3 million Americans are detained (Violent Crime Rate
Reduction, n.d.).
With new innovation on the ascent every day and people continually attempting to develop
the technology being used to day, it is to no astound that National Incident Based Reporting
System (NIBRS) is going to take the spot of the Uniform Crime Report (UCR) within a brief
span of time. This new sort of reporting gathers information on each and every crime occurrence.
Thus, the NIBRS puts out a more point by point and precise information versus outlined based
crime, which is the thing the UCR puts out (Federal Bureau of Investigation, n.d.). With this
information, law officials can focus on assets required to fight crime. This fresher kind of
reporting will permit agencies to discover likeness in crime fighting issues so that the agencies

can cooperate to create solutions and procedures for these issues. Pulling together with
community and different organizations to help archive crime and report issues will permit society
as an entirety to stay informed regarding problems in distinctive areas and permit authorities to
think of abundant answers to better serve the trouble spots. Cooperating organizations and all the
inclusive community can help keep up peace and success all through the United States.
