Overview
Operating
principle
Linear and rotary feedback systems
are systems transforming these types
of movements into electronic signals.
These signals, properly processed,
are the basis for displacements
readout for measuring and control
equipment.
FAGOR Feedback systems use two
different elements for generating the
electrical feedback signals:
- Graduated glass Scales (for linear
feedback systems) or graduated
glass discs (for rotary encoders).
- Graduated Steel Tape Scales.

Measuring process
FAGOR Feedback Systems provide the output
signals through an opto-electronic process
based on the reading of a scale or a disc (for
rotary encoders) which has been engraved
with chrome lines with a certain pitch.

IRED

Grid

Graduated Glass

The reading device consists of a light source,

a glass grid with graduated windows and
some photo-diodes as receptors.
FAGOR Feedback Systems use infrared light
emitting diodes (IRED) as light sources which
guarantee greater safety and longer life span.

Photo-diode receptors

M, MKT, C, S and G series FAGOR linear scales operate by

diffracting infrared light (IRED) through graduated glass.

The infrared beam (IRED) goes through the

graduated track and grid before reaching the
photo-diode receptors. The relative movement
between the grid and the graduated track
makes the light intensity oscillate in a sinewave fashion which, is converted by the photo
diodes into primary current modulated sinewave electrical signals (11 App). The period
of these electrical signals is the same as the
grading pitch (20 m).

Steel tape based scales

They use the principle of imaging through light
using linear nets. In these linear encoders, the
light reflects on the metallic tape. The reader
system is made up of an LED used as the light
source for the engraved (graduated) tape
(diffused light), a net that forms the image and
a single light detecting element specifically
designed by FAGOR and located in the same
plane as the image.

F and L series FAGOR linear scales: light reflected on the

lines engraved on steel tape.

Reference marks (home marker pulses)

Applications

A reference signal is a special engraving which provides a pulse when run through.
The reference signals are used to restore the machine zero position (home) and especially
to avoid errors due to accidental axis movement while the CNC or DRO was off.

In response to the new challenges that

machine manufacturers are facing (high speed
machining that cause greater vibration; greater
precision; immunity to temperature changes;
etc. FAGOR has developed two feedback
product ranges according to these new
demands.

FAGOR Linear Scales offer five types of reference marks I0:

Reference marks I0 every 50 mm
(1.97 inches)
The reference signal is synchronized with the
feedback signals in order to guarantee perfect
measurement repeatability.

Reference mark IO

(1.97 inches)

Standard Feedback Systems

Based on linear encoder models M, C and F
that cover the mechanical and electrical needs
of most conventional or standard machines.
In other words, Mills, Boring mills, grinders,
EDM, Lathes, etc.

50

Reference mark I0 that may be selected

They offer the possibility to select one or several
reference points and ignore the rest
by inserting a magnetic piece at the selected
point or points.

High Performance Feedback Systems

Selectable IO

Brand new series of linear encoders S, G

and L specially designed to meet the new
demands of CNC machines, automatic
machines or special applications. These are
some of the main responses FAGOR offers
in these fields:

50

These signals are only available in the whole

range of S and G models. When selecting
this option, FAGOR supplies a plastic strip with
the encoder.

Distance-coded reference marks I0

Each distance-coded reference mark is
separated from the next one by a different
distance which varies according to a particular
mathematical function. The position value is
restored by running over two consecutive
reference marks. The distance variation
between two consecutive reference marks gives
the absolute position of each point.

These linear encoders show a digital

measurement, accurate, fast and direct
without having to home the machine. They
are based on a pseudo-random code along
the measuring length, combined with
incremental engraving on a separate track,
that generates 1 Vpp signals.

These linear encoders may be set as
required by the application. These new
encoders are new on the market and
exclusive to FAGOR. It is possible to
program their resolution, up to five different
positions of synchronized machine
reference marks and two discreet signals
for travel limits.

The application of Surface Mounting

technology is part of the technological
innovations that Fagor Automation
incorporates into its manufacturing process.
Thanks to SMD technology, the size and
number of components used in the electronic
circuits used in the measuring systems
of FAGOR Feedback Systems have been
drastically reduced. On the other hand,
the inclusion of specific FAGOR components
assures maximum reliability.

Accuracy Control

Certificate of Accuracy
Resolution and Accuracy
The Resolution of a measuring system is the measuring unit used for
displaying a movement. Accuracy refers to the precision of the
measurement.
On FAGOR linear encoders, the accuracy defines the limits of
maximum error (in m) existing in any 1 meter section chosen at
random along its full measuring length.

Every single FAGOR linear encoder has undergone a final accuracy

control carried out on a computerized measuring table and by means
of a LASER interferometer inside a chamber whose temperature
is kept at a constant 20C (68O F).
Each FAGOR linear encoder comes with the resulting accuracy graph
(on MKT models, only upon request).
F and L series linear encoders with measuring lengths over
4040 mm are not supplied with an accuracy graph.

Mechanical Design
The scale (glass or steel tape) is protected
against possible chips, water and dirt by a
sturdy aluminum body and rubber sealing
lips meeting the IP53 protection standard.
The scale also has an air tap for installing
an optional compressed air device to reach
an IP64 protection standard.

Systems

They answer the needs of most

conventional or standard machines.

The high level of features of these linear

encoders make it possible to use them in
any machine tool application that demands
great speed, great precision under high
vibration.

They can handle speeds of up to 60 m/min

and vibrations of up to 3 g.
The accuracy of these linear encoders is
either 10 m or 5 m depending
on the model.

This new series of linear encoders not

only offer superb reliability under extreme
conditions, but also a number of features
that further increase the capabilities
of previous linear encoders.
Speed: Up to 120 meters/minute
Vibration: Up to 20 g
This feature is especially important for
high-speed applications suffering strong
vibrations that could cause erroneous
readings in the system. This would work
against the advantages of high-speed
machines. FAGOR guarantees that the
properties of the linear encoder are
maintained at high vibrations in this highly
reliable system.

Air intake on the reader head

Repeatability < 1m
The repeatability of linear encoders is
always better than a micron for the S and
G models and better than 2 microns for the
L models. Repeatability is very important
because it assures that the linear encoder
is reading correctly at all times.
Immunity against temperature
variations
FAGOR has taken into consideration the
effect of room temperature when designing
these new linear encoders. Since the
temperature cannot be controlled (in most
shops), its changes cause measuring errors.
These errors are drastically reduced thanks
to the mounting method patented by
FAGOR and offered with the new linear
encoders thus increasing their precision
and repeatability.
This results in a constant torque along the
whole linear encoder. This torque is such
that if the linear encoder changes its
position when expanding, it returns to
its original position when shrinking.

Precision: 5 m and 3 m,
depending on the model.
Some operators make the mistake of
using low-precision linear encoder thinking
that the CNC or PC will compensate for
any inaccuracies using the point-to-point
compensation and are not aware that this
type of compensation does not
compensate for the errors between
compensated consecutive points.
Therefore, a low-precision linear encoder
may actually cause greater variations
between compensated points on the
machined parts whereas FAGOR linear
encoders maintain their precision constant
at high speed and vibration.

Linear Encoder Selection Guide

The application needs to be evaluated to ensure that
the correct linear encoder is installed on the machine.
To do this the following points should be taken into
account:

Installation
This takes into account the physical length of the
installation and the space available for installation.
These are fundamental to determining the type of
linear encoder to use (Type of Profile).

Accuracy
Each linear encoder is supplied with an accuracy chart
showing the linear encoders accuracy over
it entire length.

LX / LOX

Developed with Diffused light technology to generate electrical

signals. These linear encoders are ideal for machines
with measuring lengths between 3,2 m and 30 m in high speed
and vibration environments. The special and patented design
of the mounting points (TDMS) minimizes the effect of
temperature changes on the precision of the linear encoder.
It offers reference marks every 50 mm or distance-coded
and a connector at the reader head.
The graduation pitch of the steel tape is 0.04 mm. Measuring
lengths over 4040 mm require the use of modules.

Linear Encoder For Press Brake Applications

FAGOR Automation introduces the MTD-P-2R linear encoder
especially designed for press brake applications.
The large forces required in metal forming operations can provoke
machine deformation which in turn puts strain on the linear
encoder. This strain will affect the performance of the linear
encoder and may lead to a reduction of accuracy or repeatability in
the forming operation.
To overcome this problem Fagor Automation has designed an
incremental linear encoder especially for press brake applications.
The linear encoder is supplied as a pre assembled unit. The linear
encoder and reader head are connected to the aluminum support
and it can be connected directly to the machine.
