Why Beekeeping ?
Beekeeping was not developed for honey production by any government across the world but
for increasing the crop yield through pollination by bees. Honey is by-product of
beekeeping.Bees collect pollen from male flower and nectar (honey) from female flower; hence
the pollen is transferred from male to female flower resulting on fruit. The non pollinated
female flowers will not fertilize to produce seed and go in vain.
The naturally occurring bee colonies will migrate to the flowering regions, but due to
deforestation and extensive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, the bees population has
decreased. So the pollination of crops decreased which resulted in poor crop yield. In order to
overcome this humans designed bee hives in which bees were maintained & migrated to the
flowering regions as required. This increased the pollination and crop yield. Honey was also
made from these bee hives.
In general the returns from pollination is higher than that of honey, since crop yield increases
by 30% on an average & this will vary based on crops. The interesting thing in beekeeping is
crop yield increases to 30% without any additional labor or cost & honey also makes money.
There is no other technique in agriculture which will provide double income like beekeeping.
